dough boy, i think i love you

When I'm busy readying the manor for house guests, and need to make more than one dessert, I like to call on my friend, the Pillsbury Dough Boy to help me out.  Don't tell, but I sometimes cheat a little when I'm in a rush, and use his ready made pie dough. You know, the rolled kind that comes in the long red box.  This one happens to be filled with fresh-cut gala apples.  The trick is glazing the top with a mix of orange juice and powdered sugar when it's still hot from the oven. Believe me, I never hear any complaints. Thanks, Dough Boy, you're not only cute and squishy, but you're ever so helpful.

  2. In the immortal words of the Partridge Family: "I think I love you, so what am I so afraid of? I'm afraid that I'm not sure of a love that there's no cure for." Some things are just meant to be.

  3. no shame tess - i have a girl in my house who would far rather eat the dough boy's little croissants (out of the tube that makes a bang when you open it) than any i can get from the bakery. go figure!!! steven

  4. I used to have to punch the Dough Boy at the supermarket but thought about punching my wife in the dough...

  5. The Pillsbury Dough Boy was very popular over here, during the late 70s, then he seemed to vanish. Now I know where he was heading...Willow Manor!

  6. Sorry Tess, I have to say it - that looks disgusting! (but I bet it tastes ok)

  7. Tom, you smarty. I bet I could coax you into a piece, if I cried a little.

  12. Bake a pie and who shows up? Me!!!!!!! It looks great......like you baked it yourself. I guess you've been so busy dancing to Duke of Earl and Wild Thing.... time got away from you. I'm just teasing. I used to have a dough boy when I was little. He is soo sweet, inside and out and especially in the oven. Enjoy your company, you "do-it-all-with-such-finesse-girl" !!!! =D

  13. Your pie looks yummy! I haven't seen Pillsbury Dough Boy here for years but can remember the round drums in the chill cabinet.

We can buy frozen stuff - but not the same!

  16. Well I'm shocked Tess. You know I have Martha Stewart on speed dial next to the button for 911 and I may have to report you for crimes against pastry!

  17. It looks WONDERFUL.

Now, thanks to your title...I am singing "dough boy, I think I love you" in place of Wild THING!

  19. I resisted Dough Boy's siren call for many years, thinking nothing could compare to the 'real' thing. After many years of mixing and rolling flour and water and shortening, it really doesn't take any more time, right?

ooohh noooo. I stand corrected, and have used that delightful boy's All Ready pie crusts on many occasions in the last few years. Thank you, Dough Boy. I love you, too.

I sprinkle the hot crust with coarse sugar for a rustic look, but the orange juice sounds marvelous!

  20. I have one of those boxes in the fridge. I took inventory this morning...fresh farm eggs, bacon, mushrooms, sour cream,cheese....I'm thinking it's time to make a quiche.

Love your orange juice trick. It makes the pie crust look delish.

  24. Don't worry, you're not alone in the dough boy's circle of friends! I've called on the little man many times for Sunday morning cinnamon buns and pie help myself.

Hey, congrats on your chapbook... it sounds great. May have to grab a copy for myself :)

  25. Rolling over the dough boy...heeheeheeePOP! Feet first. Hope the pie was good - never glazed with OJ before, but why not?

  26. Sounds good! Must try that glaze. My ace-in-the-hole is frozen puff pastry.

  27. Beautiful pie. I have always shunned the ready made anything but I must admit I tried one once and it wasn't bad. It was actually used for a blackberry cobbler and sent to the cabin with a group of men. They never knew the difference.

  28. I simply CANNOT imagine any complaints about food--or anything else--at the Manor! I can smell and taste that pie NOW...while having another glass of water--grin!

    PEACE!

  29. Oh. My. God.

    What more can I say?

  30. I have to confess, ready made pie crust has saved me on many occasion. When you live out in the country...have unexpected guests...I can hand them a little something to drink, whip up a fruit tart before they know what hit 'em. I too never get any complaints. Have to try your glaze sometime, sounds good!!

  31. This looks delicious. And if you poke Mr Pillsbury in the tummy, he laughs! Well on British tv anyway!

  32. I put that same glaze on top of pound cakes, biscotti, and pies. It's so good, isn't it? And those pie crusts in the long red box are not too bad--your pie looks great! I'll bet it's gone already!

  33. I love the way you guys over there have names for food brands -asking for some "dough boy" sounds much more fun than boring old "pastry" that we have here in OZ!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm kinda with Tom - it doesn't look very appetizing - more like someone ... well, let's not go there.
    ;-)

Oh, but the orange juice and powdered sugar sounds good. And since the frozen pie crusts down here tastes awful, I make my own but I will definitely try that glaze.

  35. Me and the dough boy go way back. Really, is there a reason to work at pie crust when the dough boy is in the neighborhood?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I call upon the dough boy quite often when making pies....shhhhhh....don't tell.

    Looks yummy!

  42. I baked two carrot cakes yesterday... they turned out ghastly for some reason... I think I may have been a little over enthusiastic with the bicarb of soda and the baking power. Can't think what else destroyed the poor things. I need to look into the Dough Boy phenomenon...

  43. I bet it tastes great. Here in the Philippines, we have the most disgusting-looking fruit called Durian, which smells like poop, but tastes just so heavenly. I can tell the presentation is part of the surprise. I'm drooling, Tess.

  44. Oh swoooon. Swoon! I use that pie crust too sometimes and it makes a lovely quiche!

i'm sure I haven't mentioned how much I like the look of your new blog-face. So much.

  45. Hi! Willow...
That looks great...No, wonder you hear no complaints from your guest.

Willow said,"Thanks, Dough Boy, you're not only cute and squishy, but you're ever so helpful."
    (Laughter!)

    Thanks, for sharing!

  47. My husband does a giggle just like his.
I have a pair of dough boy fleece pants. They are roomy, and they go well with pie, and the Partridge Family : )

  48. i love those long red boxes and happy that the dough boy's people had the idea to roll instead of fold our cheaters!!!

  49. Ah yes, it is clever little tricks like that Willow that deceive the guest into thinking it is home made!

  50. I've been seeing the dough boy for quite some time! I can't make a crust to save my life, but the dough boy is always there, with his twinkling blue eyes and little giggle.

Nice tip on the OJ/sugar topping! Gives the boy a little zest!

  51. Why do I come here and torment myself? Gawd that looks delicious.

My apples trees are blossoming. I'll trade out for a pie come summer's end.
