goodbye, summer

Fisherman's Cottage, Harald Sohlberg, 1907
.

Make me a willow cabin at your gate,
And call upon my soul within the house;
Write loyal cantons of contemned love
And sing them loud even in the dead of night;
Halloo your name to the reverberate hills
And make the babbling gossip of the air
Cry out 'Olivia!' O, You should not rest
Between the elements of air and earth,
But you should pity me!
.
.
William Shakespeare
from Twelfth Night, Act I, Scene V

  2. The painting is gorgeous & the verse is fun. We still have summer--90 degrees & very smoky.

  3. hi willow, the painting made my heart jump - i'd so love to live there. it'd be cold as a cat's curse some days with the wind and all but worth it for the views and the sounds and the smells. beautiful post willow. have a lovely evening at the manor. steven

  4. Seems I can never digest Shakespeare except in little bits. Then I can understand the beauty of the words. Really lovely, Willow. And the painting does speak of summer's end.

  5. Beautiful painting and verse. The painting reminds me of the view out of my homme office window. We live on Lake Conroe. I'll post a photo on my blog tomorrow. Drop by for coffee and pear preserves!

  7. Well, it took me reading 3 comments before I realized that it was a painting! haha! I thought it was a photo. I guess I should have read the caption!

  9. Willow--Loved reading some of the postings that I have been unable to see since my "illness" but I think that I am coming back to life. I loved that painting too. I guess I need to order Netflix so that that I can watch some of your recommendations. They sound great. Hope you have a really great weekend. We, too, are still warm here and wishing I could have a bit (just a bit) of your rain.

And the final day closes on the summer. Bring on the autumn! Good one, Willow :)

  13. Summer's hanging on here - at least in terms of temperature; eighty eight degrees! I mowed lawn (and pecan leaves) all day.

It is a lovely painting - the light definitely recalls the slanting light of September. And such an apropos "willowesque" bit of poetry.

    I love your ever-changing imagery.

  14. The painting reminds me of my Aunt Martha. She had trees in her backyard that sat in front of a sunset sky. She called it her "black lace sky."

Today was the first "autumny" day here. Thanks for the reminding me to think of Aunt Martha during a time of year she loved.

  18. We are trying to scoot Summer out the door, but she insists on lingering here in the south. Her heat has worn out it's welcome. I also loved the painting. It looks so peaceful and serene.

  19. Wow! I nearly made a right fool of myself; more than usual that is.

I saw the picture; I thought: what a lovely photograph you've taken again.

Then the poetry: how beautiful, and I'd learned a new word (to me that is): contemned. I thought you might have meant condemned.

So, I was going to praise your photography and your poetry! It proves you should always read the small print!

I can, and do, praise your post!!!

  22. The blues of that painting seem infinite. And the little cottage seems to have gathered all the light to itself. A wonderful painting!

  23. I'd move into that cottage in a beat!

  26. We've been having very nice Fall days .. a chill in the morning, sun in the afternoons, quick chill as soon as the sun goes down. Very nice transition ...

And, I would love to have a cabin in the woods by the water ..

  30. Beautiful painting,
I have never before seen it!

Here in V., these late September days have brought forth a warm golden Indian Summer, which makes one want to hold on to it and never let it go!

  36. I'm inspired. We had one small breath of fall after a major rain shower last week. The cold front had lost its cool on the road south, but a very brief residue lingered in the air. Pappy
