Preach always. If necessary, use words. ~ St. Francis

Do you regularly wear a piece of jewelry, other than an obvious piece
like your wedding ring, that is particularly significant to you? One I've
worn for years, that is especially symbolic to me, is this vintage gold
St. Francis of Assisi medal. The simple life and wonderful words of St.
Francis have long been a source of inspiration to me. When I feel this
lovely charm against my skin, I feel peace.

Make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

  1. Happy Spring, Willow. Lovely St. Francis medallion. May He always keep you safe and grant you peace!

    I have a gold locket that my husband gave me on our wedding day. He had a tiny gold heart engraved that fits inside and on the same chain I wear his tiny gold baby ring. My treasure.

  3. I wear no jewelry what so ever. No wedding ring, not watch, no ornaments at all. I prefer simplicity. I will carry a wallet but it often goes into someone else's purse.

  4. Thank you the saying of St Francis of Assisi. I t is nice to be reminded of these words.

    I wear a small white gold diamond embellished twisted cross that my oldest daughter gave me for Christmas nine years ago. It gives me great peace and a declaration of my faith.

  5. I don't have a medal, but I do have a wooden St. Francis statue I adore. I've had it displayed in my living room for years....right next to the bird Mark's father carved for us for our wedding.

  6. That piece is lovely! I got married January of this year and while browsing for a song for our "first dance" I came across a Sarah McLachlan tune. She has a song done using this prayer you have posted from our dear Saint. So we used that for our first dance as husband and wife! :) :) :)

    Not getting lost!

  9. It is a lovely medal and his words are truly a road map for us all to live by. Still as relevant today as they were 8,000 years ago. Blessed be.

  10. I wear my cross, and it is what I look at when I look in the mirror. It is what I hold when I am in need. It is from my older sister and she cannot remember giving it to me. But I have worn it for over 30 years. I have only taken it off when I have had x-rays and my MRI's. If another necklace does not go with it, then I do not wear it. And since most don't, I don't. I would be lost without it. I know how you feel.

    It reminds me of my faith, not religion, just faith. Faith that there is something more. And for some reason that I am unsure of, I feel safe. When I need to feel safe, I hold it.

    God bless.

  11. I've always liked that prayer --awesome, and challenging -- and have been interested in stories about St. Francis since I was a kid. Thanks for posting this. I needed to be reminded of a few things.

  12. We also used to sing this prayer in my University choir (The University of the Philippines Concert Chorus), unfortunately I don't have any recordings of this song to share. :(

  14. I don't wear medals as such, but wore dog tags for about 5 years then stopped and got some new ones with my name, address, blood type and phone number. At the time I was walking or riding my bike every day and the risk of being struck by a car was great. I also had some health problems. If I was found they could tell who I was and where I went -- as in stuck in a drawer.

  15. Lovely words, I had heard them before but did not know who first said them. I can see why you like your gold piece so much. I wear an old Claddagh ring given to me by my aunt, for much the same reason.

  17. Have you watched Franco Zeffirelli's movie "Brother Sun Sister Moon", about the life of San Francis of Assisi and Santa Clara?

    A visit to Assisi in Umbria, Italy, this time of the year is like travelling back centuries. There are still wide open fields and meadows where red poppies bloom, just the way Zeffirelli shows in his movie.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  18. Willow -- truly words to live by!
    The idea of being an instrument for peace and love is really centering. And were we all to do so, it could transform the world.

    (I don't have any jewellery that I regularly wear -- other than my wedding ring.)

  20. I have a small bronze Roman coin in a silver mount that I wear all the time. It bears the head of the Emperor Constantine I on the obverse (Constantine allowed the Empire to embrace Christianity, but curiously he himself was not a Christian) and Romulus, Remus and the she-wolf on the reverse. It reflects my interest in all things Roman!

  21. Thank you for the beautiful St.Francis prayer. It really says everything that we should know and feel.
    I wear always, a gold ring on my little finger, that was my grandfather's. His initials,
    JL, almost worn off..but I rub the ring for remembrance and luck!

  22. Gosh, I'm the first today.
    Yes, this prayer is a good reminder when we are feeling selfish to find joy in looking outwards to help others.

  24. Good morning Wills,
    Sorry, what is vintage gold? I mean, I know it's OLD GOLD, but now I'm scratching my head....hmmm.
    I love to wear my Burmese jade earrings. When I got my ears pierced at age 16, these were my first pair of earrings.
    Some things never go out of style.
    Have a great weekend!

  32. I truly love that prayer - there are three that, for me, sum up everything I need to remember for living a good life and that is one. Most often I wear a silver Hand of Protection that was given to me by a group of girlfriends. I was going through chemo and moving across the country......and they wanted to always be with me and protect me.

  35. Thank you for this perfect prayer and meditation to begin a first weekend of spring. Many Catholic and Episcopal churches celebrate The Feast of Saint Francis (October 4) by having a blessing of the animals. This is of one my favorite feast days. There has always been a small statue of Saint Francis in the garden of the chapel I attend. Father Wells tells the story of one memorable trip with the college students to the beach. As he was packing his car to leave, he noticed that the statue was gone. Resigned never to see it again, he made his way with the group to the Gulf Coast. Imagine his surprise and joy when he walked to the beach after one eager pair of kids were already set up with beach towels, coolers, loungers, and St. Francis keeping watch in a pair of sunglasses. He is indeed a well loved and, in this case, well travelled saint!
    My husband wears a Saint Maurice medal which accompanied him in war.

  36. I love St. Francis. My mother has him in our garden.

    I wear lots of jewelry, but the only thing I wear religiously is my wedding ring.

    I've been blessed to receive many pieces of jewelry from friends and relatives. Each piece of jewelry I wear reminds me of that person. I spread them around.

  37. I'm always struck by the beauty and simplicity of that prayer. It contains a lot to live up to.

  39. Willow.....that is a beautiful medal! I only wear jewelry when going out except for the band part of my mother's wedding rings which I wear all the time.(my sister has the other half)When I go out, I add my own wedding ring to it, plus other pieces, rings,necklace,
    watch.
    I love St. Francis and have been looking for a large garden statue of him to place out back.

  44. I've been wearing a sterling silver St. Michael medal since my son left for his second tour in Iraq, and will continue to wear it constantly at least until he comes home for good. From the moment I first put it on, I felt reassured, protected, and strong.

  45. It's lovely to have something without which one doesn't feel fully dressed. My first 'big' present from Mr FF was a platinum chain with a diamond in a platinum squiggle and it is never taken off. Once it got caught, broke and I sent it to London for repair - I felt so upset until it came back.

  46. I think pieces of jewelry which are important to us often have been given to us by someone we love - I have an amethyst brooch given to me by my sister upon the death of my first husband - although I rarely wear it I treasure it greatly - similarly a tiny onyx and pearl brooch given to me by my husband on our wedding day. At present i wear a gold chain bought for me by the farmer - and I never take it off - without it I feel lost and alone.

  47. Beautiful and simple. Perfect.

    I have a necklace with little charms that I have been collecting for over thirty years. Baby rings from my children, a charm for my 40th birthday, a key, heart, and sailboat back when the "key to my heart is sailing". Pre-kids and hubby, of course. Love it and wear it often.

  50. In San Francisco the monks would gather in the dog parks on St. Francis's day to bless the dogs. It was always a wild scene with lots of wagging tales and good will. He's one of my favorite saints.

    I almost always wear a silver "ommmm" necklace with a moonstone pendant on the same chain. It's not an expensive piece, but it has some power to it. People can't take their eyes off it.

  53. I wear two Tahitian pearl necklaces, each with just one, a dark green almost black colour, and I wear them together, as one is just slightly longer.
    I was given the first by my friend Lorenzo on my last day in Tahiti. I'd already said goodbye to him and my other friends for what I thought would be the last time, and I was leaving the house at 4am in the morning. When we returned home late from dinner, I was in Mihimana's bedroom when she went to her window, turned to me, and said (in french) that someone was calling me. So I went to the window and Lorenzo told me to come downstairs as he had something for me. So I descended and went out into the alley, and he suddenly became very shy, and asked for a photo, made some jokes, then, when his friends were occupied, pulled a gorgeous necklace out of his pocket. I couldn't believe it! I thanked him so much, and then Mihimana presented me with one almost the same, they'd been out shopping for me together.
    I'll never forget my Tahitian family and friends :)

  54. What a beautiful medallion. The prayer you posted, of St. Francis, is on my bedroom wall next to an icon of him. I find it one of the most helpful in my life, giving me always something to strive towards.

    "Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console .." is my favorite line ...

    My regular piece of jewelry is a silver Celtic Cross that hangs about my neck. comforting and symbolic..

  55. Hi Willow,
    thanks for this post. St Francis is my patron. I took his name at my baptism 25 years ago when I came into the church. I had always admired him, especially in my hippie days. His message of peace and his example of a Christ-like life are timeless

    God Bless

    Ron

    btw, I wear a St Benedict Medal/Crucifix and it really means a lot to me. Several of my old friends from home wear the same crucifix and none of us knew each other had chosen that one. When we found out we all had the same one, it was such a sign that we were all very connected even though living in different parts of the country.

  59. The answer to your question is yes. I have kept a little lock of my wife's hair in my wallet for more than thirteen years since we started going out together. It's threaded in a short plait.

    Still related to your post. A few Sundays ago I posted a clip of the Camerata Romeu performing a piece by the Cuban composer Leo Brower. You said: 'You go girls!' which brought a smile to my face then and now because the first time I saw the Camerata was at the St Francis de Asisi Convent in Old Havana in the early 90s after it had undergone a thorough refurbishment. SO, you see, what goes around comes around. Lovely post as usual.

    Greetings from London.

  60. My great Aunt Geraldine once wrote a play about St. Francis that was performed in Toronto back in the 1920's. On a recent visit to a relative in Cleveland, I discovered he had a copy of the original manuscript along with playbills and reviews from the local papers. He kindly allowed me to make a photocopy.

    The writing is very dated but it has humour and energy.

    Of course its not jewelry so I can't wear it.

  61. What a nice medallion! I wear a heart charm with my grandfather's name engraved in the back. He gave it to my grandmother when they were in high school, and she wore it on her charm bracelet. Now I like to imagine I carry a piece of them (and their fairy tale-like romance) wherever I go.

  63. I went to St. Francis of Assisi elementary school and church for years. I have the prayer on a linen wall hanging in my dining room and it is one of my favourite hymns. I also have a statue of him in my back garden to watch over all who visit my little haven.

    As for jewelry, I have a Miraculous Medal in silver and a COR cross from a retreat I made as a teenager.

  65. I wear my Daddy's wedding ring. He and my mother were divorced many years ago. When my aunt and I went to clean out his apartment when he passed away almost 6 years ago, she found his wedding band neatly tucked away and asked me if I wanted it. Of course I said yes, and put it on my right middle finger. It fit perfectly and it's been there ever since.

    God bless, Willow.

  67. Hello Willow,

    I've just discovered your blog and I love it!

    I also love the Francis of Assisi prayer. It's my favorite prayer. This prayer changed my outlook in life when I was deeply sad and extremely pessimistic. Whenever it's sung at Mass I have to restrain myself from crying.

    Besides my wedding rings, I wear this little thin gold band my mother brought back from Mexico after visiting her family ages ago. It was too big for me to wear and left it in my jewelry box until I discovered it when I entered college. I never take it off and I just feel comforted when I see it on my finger. I don't know but it makes me feel closer to my mother. The funny thing is my mother doesn't remember bringing it home for me and has asked me at several different occasions where I got this tiny gold ring.

    I also love this prayer. It changed my outlook of life. I was deeply sad and extremely pessimistic and hated everything. Whenever this is sung at Mass I have to restrain myself from crying. Thanks for sharing this.
    I do wear a tiny gold band every single day other than my wedding bands. It's a gold band my mother brought back for me from visiting her family back in Mexico a very long time ago. It was too large for me to wear so I tucked into my little jewelry box only to rediscover it when I started college. I feel closer to my mother and really comforted whenever I see it on my finger. The funny thing is my mother has asked my at several different occasions where I got the ring. Too funny.

  69. Hi Willow,
    Happened upon your blog when searching for the source of the St Francis quote. Love that quote. Love your blog. I just started one -- it's very simple yet (OK, it's plain and ugly). I'm brand new and still learning about blogging; thought you might like it. It's intended for divorced Moms with a sense of humor who are trying to live in faith of Christ. But most of the people reading are my married friends.

I like the protection I feel wearing it, and it offers people an insight to what means most to me....faith and family. I collect angels, and this is one that is always with me.
