.
Sometimes, when we're on a long drive,
and we've talked enough and listened
to enough music and stopped twice,
once to eat, once to see the view,
we fall into this rhythm of silence.
It swings back and forth between us
like a rope over a lake.
Maybe it's what we don't say
that saves us.

lovely and an amazing image.
ReplyDeleteI'm so in love with this photo...and the words of Laux.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful thought ... It's what we don't say that saves us.
ReplyDeleteThey do say talk is silver but silence is golden. The people we can be with in a comfortable silence are the best people to be with.
ReplyDeleteBoth photo and quote are just great and they really fit my mood as the day is awful, so foggy I can't even see the buildings across the small park in front of my house... Where did the sun go? :-)
ReplyDeleteThe painting is amazing. It shines, as if there's a source of illumination contained within it. Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis means a lot to me. I love the idea of the rhythm of silence - it can be so tangible. This silence of understanding is so very, very precious and quite rare.
ReplyDeleteThank you Willow.
Hi Willow,
ReplyDeleteI agree, this is the best kind of silence to have and the poem sums it up beautifully.
Fab image.
ReplyDeleteAnother great sound to listen to when you're in your car is the sound of loud rain drops.
PBS update.

so sorry about the camera ...
that totally sucks.
Beautiful poem. Guess I need to look up a bk by her. I like the poems of hers you have quoted.
ReplyDeleteNice post willow.
ReplyDeleteI love the feel of those words...combined with the photo...so intimate...so real.
ReplyDeleteIf only we had a car!
ReplyDeleteGood post ... wonderful image
Great post Ms. Willow!!! Love the photo and the sentiment.

Thanks, Susan. I love Wuthering Heights. Any version. My favorite might be the Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche film.
ReplyDeleteI love this poem and photograph. And the feeling is so familiar... thanks, Roxanne
ReplyDelete'rhythm of silence'
ReplyDeleteAlso I enjoy silence or nature sounds, wind, rain, birds...at like this situation.
Rather than music.
so true
ReplyDeleteSuch a true poem, every word. And the photo is perfect, thank you.
ReplyDeleteSo true. I love long drives. In 1971, my mother and I took a trip cross-country. We took turns driving, and reading the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy to each other.
ReplyDeleteWe often fell into the silences in which we relived the scenes in the privacy of our own minds.
I'll never forget that trip. It was the one time we actually got along famously with each other!
Beautiful picture and poem, Willow. As everyone has said, that kind of 'comfortable' silence is so acceptable. It's the angry silences that aren't so good - you know the ones!
ReplyDeleteHi Willow,
ReplyDeleteI agree and also relate to it as its that silence that makes me love my company...and hence probably saves me too.:)
Simple truths, succulently and poignantly captured by the poet and photographer. Thank you for your sensitivity to beauty.
ReplyDeleteI've just come back from the cinema seeing the French film 'I've loved you so long' and you have carried on the theme of what you don't say ......... This is a beautiful and heartbreaking film - do see it if you get the chance!
ReplyDeleteExcellent choice of poem/song.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's so good when you don't HAVE to talk to someone and the silence isn't awkward at all.
There is beautiful silence inside of us. Many times when I'm on a long drive I enjoy the silence. Restraining from speaking could be a gift. How many times we blurt out a commentary that was not well thought and ended up hurting or wounding a love one.The photo is very evocative of such times.
ReplyDeleteCompaniable silence is a wonderful thing. Lovely quote Willow, and sorry to hear about your camera via Susan. Hope it won't be too long before you can replace it.
ReplyDeleteThank you....beautiful words that captured me. Wonderful image.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photograph and beautiful words too.
ReplyDeleteThe best kind of relationships are the ones where you can have a comfortable silence. I think that silence is where the love lives.
ReplyDeleteI want to say exactly what HDD said.
ReplyDeleteBut also that I've always thought that my husband isn't the easiest person to talk to . . . but definitely the easiest person to be silent with.
This describes my husband and I to a T!
ReplyDeleteI love those words.
ReplyDeleteHey is Simon and Garfunkel over here?

The Bach
The wonderful sound of silence. I loved the poem and it's so up my street. I sometimes take my headphones off when I am listening to music on my CD player or mp3 and just for a brief instant enjoy the natural sounds around me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the poem and the image.
Greetings from London.
Love the post. Love the photo. Love you.
ReplyDeleteGood match up with the photo and the lyrics.
ReplyDeletePerfect words to match the photo.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo
ReplyDeleteThat is a very dramatic picture! I love it but do not envy the driving conditions.
ReplyDeleteThought is a very powerful tool.
ReplyDeleteCJ xx
That's a great photo! I love that companionable silence that sometimes occurs. Laux is speaking about something else though, isn't she?

I must say I was a bit touched by this. One of those string of words that enlightens. Picture goes perfect
ReplyDeleteYou're a great writer, keep it up. And I'll be back ;)
