Man With a Cigar

.
Tango Baby posted an artsy beach photo which she referred to as one
of those happy accidents. You know the ones, where the subject is
accidentally out of focus, but the effect is quite magical? I was given a
nice tripod as a Christmas gift and everyone enjoyed dressing up with
props and posing for portraits. While downloading and sorting through
my holiday pics today, I came across this shot which is one of those
lovely accidents. It has a wonderfully dark "film noir" look about it,
don't you think?

  1. It looks brilliant, Willow! (Like the new header too.)

I once had a 'happy accident' with one of my oil paintings, which slithered off the back seat of the car while still wet. It created a wonderful effect in the painted sky - but not so good on the car seats!!

  2. That is really cool. I haven't had any happy accidents yet - unless you count my four wonderful children!

  3. I love your "happy accident", willow! He looks like a secret agent spying on the important ladies who are sipping tea at the corner cafe.

  6. I love it. I love the way his pink skin kind of bleeds into the mauve back ground. And that hat. Very stylish.

  7. Hi Willow, I collect vintage vernacular snapshots and accidents are my favorite to collect - I especially love double exposures and spirit shots. Yours has a spirit feel to it. Love it. I'm planning to post some of my collection soon. Kim

  8. hi willow,

I love that my photo has inspired you and robin bird today. It's funny how you see your photo as noirish. I was going to second what Kim and David mentioned about the spirit photos.

Just before I took my photo, we had gone to SF MOMA to see a collection of scientific photographs from 1850-1900. A portion of them were of spirit photography, showing ghostly images. So The Boy named my photo the Spirit Surfers and I like that quite a lot.

Thanks for sharing yours with us. ;-)

  9. Well, it's funny that you should mention the spirit-ness of this photo, because the shot was taken at one of the most "haunted" spots in the Manor!

  10. Interesting observation, Willow. I was going to ask if the Willow Wraith was about when the shot was taken!

  14. I agree.

And another beautiful header! I wasn't a big fan of the last one with the woman with no face. But then it began to grow on me.

Sorry. I'm having an early cocktail and am being blatantly honest.

  15. This would look great in grey scale (or perhaps toned like a platinotype?). Very 30's European.

    I love the header, too.

  18. It does have a film noir ganster quality about it, great shot. Those are the kinds of mistakes we love.

  19. Never admit your art is an accident. Let people wonder how you achieved the effect. Pappy

  28. I love it! With two active little boys a lot of my photos seem to be "happy accidents"... sometimes too many of them.

  29. The thing I noticed about the shot, is while I was looking at it, it slowly came into focus, of course not completely, but it didn't make sense at all at first...cool(doesn't take much for me)

  30. The man looks like Stanley Tucci.

  31. Beautiful effect on the cigar photo. I don't know why but it looks like Bruce Willis to me.

  34. Never admit to photographic accidents. If it looks good, it was planned that way!

  35. Hello Willow,

Your cigar man certainly is mysterious but I'm inclined to agree with the Bruce Willis lookalike!

Wouldn't it be good if all our 'duff' shots were as fortuitous?

Like Jeane, I also like your new profile image. Very seductive.

  36. This is very artistic and interesting.
I love it when one gets accidental effects which are fun.
    Yes, very film-like.

  39. That is so effective, willow. He looks like he'd also be very striking in a normal photo as well. I love men in hats - trilby type ones. It's such a good look.

  40. For me a photographic accident is when the pictures come out in focus.

Mark me a fan of your new header too!

  41. It's spooky, but it doesn't give me the willies.

    Happy new year, WIllow!

  42. He seems to be boarding a train. A Cold War thriller? How about "The Third Man"?

Anyway, there are no accidents... so they say...

    Fab!!

  43. Oh yes! Very "Big Sleep" (the original, of course).
