Wyeth's Pilgrims
It's about time to pull N. C. Wyeth's Pilgrims off the shelf. I get
it out every Thanksgiving, even though I don't have any children
around to read it to. I love to browse through it myself! It's the story
of the settling of the Plymouth Colony and celebration of the first
Thanksgiving, magnificently illustrated with paintings by the renowned
American artist N.C. Wyeth and carefully researched text by the well
known children's author Robert San Souci. It's a beautiful reminder of
the bravery and determination of our forebears. It's a must have if you
have children or grandchildren around for Thanksgiving, or just simply
because it is a lovely little book. Get a copy this holiday season and
snuggle up on the sofa with the cuties in your life...little ones, or big
ones!

I haven't seen this one. Looks like a holiday classic though.
ReplyDeleteI was not aware of this one either. Will get and read with my munchkins
ReplyDeleteBeautiful illustrations! I will keep this in mind for the distant future when grandchildren visit at Thanksgiving. :)
ReplyDeleteWillow,
ReplyDeleteSince we are celebrating Thanksgiving apart from all our off spring for the first time in forty-one years we've been invited to join a party of 24 at my paddling partner's home for the holiday.
I've just order this; N. C. Wyeth's Pilgrims, as a gift for them, both bibliophiles with grand children in the making. I know they will love this!
Thanks ever so much mon amie.

Gorgeous! I want one!
ReplyDeleteI need to pick this up. =)
ReplyDeleteCan't believe it's almost Thanksgiving.
There are nice expressions of middle centuries good and simply daily life.
ReplyDeleteOh I'd love to go to an American Thanksgiving dinner. It always looks so much fun when I've seen it in films or on tv shows. I recall the Everybody Loves Raymond (yes, we do get it in Europe) when Debra made the turkey out of tofu. Classic!
ReplyDeleteOh, man, I LOVE Wyeth, and have never seen this! It looks fabulous--I'm going to check out amazon and see what I can do to remedy THAT situation! thanks for the tour! gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteWillow - another fabulous recommendation - these illustrations are just wondeful!
ReplyDeleteThank you Willow, these illustrations are beautiful, splendid, and the colors...
ReplyDeleteI was not aware of this one either! I will look for it and snuggle up while I read it to the Mister.
ReplyDeleteHow long does Thanksgiving last and is it now? Is it different in Canada?
ReplyDeleteWhatever, I wish you and WT and your family a very happy one!

I think this is one that we need at our house. I've always loved N.C. Wyeth's work and I know my boys would enjoy this book.
ReplyDeleteLove the illustrations, pity we don't do Thanksgiving. Mind you I can always snuggle up in my Pj's and educate myself...
ReplyDeleteSuch lovely illustrations! I have Wyeth's Treasure Island (when I was a kid I loved it so much it was the only edition of Treasure Island I would read. No one else can capture the Stevenson's story like Wyeth can). I haven't seen this one though! I'm going to be searching for it everywhere now!
ReplyDeleteWillow, I didn't know about this book, but I certainly will look for a copy. As I've said before I love N.C. and I always try to have interesting books on hand for the kidlets. I bought one for them at the da Vinci exhibit recently, which I am looking forward to browsing through with them.
ReplyDeleteI am planning to do a literary post when I have time to compose my thoughts. Loved reading your answers.
Wonderful pictures. That reminds me of a series of books by Peter Marshall. The first one, "The Light and the Glory" covers from Christopher Columbus to the Revelutionary war. There is an excellent chapter on the Pilgrims and our old friend Squanto. The books are writted to answer the question...Did God have a plan for America. It's just excellent. Thanks for the nice post. Strider
ReplyDeleteAll the Wyeth's are amazing illustrators.
ReplyDeleteA new one for me. Never seen it before. I love the images and I love the fact that even though your little ones are not little ones anymore :-), you still take it off the shelf and give it a good read-through.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
Makes me want to get the meal started early. Pappy
ReplyDeleteHey, I've been thinking of the Wyeths lately. Andrew Wyeth's winter paintings are incredible. They are so detailed, I swear I can hear the frozen ground crunching under his boots and the ravens cawing overhead.
ReplyDeleteWonderful illustrations. I don't know the book but I am sure it is stirring. I did read a book early this year about the Pilgrim Fathers and it was fascinating. Wish I could be there for Thanksgiving. I so enjoyed my experience of Thanksgiving in 1970. I left you a tag on my blog!
ReplyDeleteI love NC Wyeth and the tradition of reading books relevant to the holiday/season. Not that I do that, but love the idea of it. I lived on Cape Cod for 30 years. Not far from Plimouth Plantation. Every year they served a Thanksgiving feast there at the plantation. I never went but often thought of going. You had to make reservations a year ahead of time. I did however tour the Plantation a number of times both with my son and when visitors came. I loved the place. The workers (pilgrims) can answer no questions about things happening after 1692 or whatever the date is. I love it. A friend of mine took a summer job as a pilgrim one year. Well I tell you, she even had to wear the correct WOOLEN undees for the character role. What a trip. Happy Thanksgiving to ye.
ReplyDeleteWow! So lovely and traditional and Thanksgiving-y...I think I will get myself a copy! Thanks...
ReplyDeleteDon't you just love NC! You know, I was once in a house that had a remarkable collection of art. I wandered downstairs and came face to face with a huge NC Wyeth on the wall. I was just awestruck. My husband had to pull me away before I embarrassed myself.
ReplyDeleteThis is new to me. Thanks for sharing

Nice post with pretty picture...
ReplyDeleteI love the work of Robert San Souci. I've actually met him. He's a wonderful guy and an interesting speaker. I treasure my autographed storybooks signed by him. So you know The Talking Eggs, yes? An amazing book. I really, really love the pilgrims book. I use it in my classroom every Thanksgiving week. I hope you are able to enjoy all your preparations. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
