Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles!

Stevie suggested Fiddler on the Roof to chase the sickies away. But
this good news is really hitting the spot! Do you know what this is?
It's an empty nest. Our oldest just signed a lease on his very own
place! Yippeee!! Granted, it's just up the road a bit, and he will still be
doing his laundry here for a while, but WT and I have not experienced
childless living in almost 29 years! First of all, our plans are to gut "the
bat cave". This is a term of endearment used to describe the boys'
room up over the garage our two sons have shared for the last 20
years. After we use a small forklift to clear the rubble, we will scrape
and paint the entire thing, ceiling, walls and floor. And another perk!
Healthier, leaner meals, since Mr. Meat and Potato Head is moving
out. Yay!! Willow Manor is going to seem a little larger and a little
quieter now, but am I ever ready. Sigh.

When mothers talk about the depression of the empty
nest, they're not mourning the passing of all those wet
towels on the floor, or the music that numbs your teeth,
or even the bottle of capless shampoo dribbling down
the shower drain. They're upset because they've gone
from supervisor of a child's life to a spectator. It's like
being the vice president of the United States.

  1. God rest Erma's soul .. that quote couldnt be more timely, maybe someone should send it to Mrs Palin who didnt seem quite up on what the job entailed .. but I digress ...

I think chicken soup NOT Fiddler on the Roof would work to make you better ...

  2. Yes, I thought the vice president part of Erma's quote would spark some conversation. ;)

Actually, chicken soup for the last three days has helped. I'm finally starting to feel better. This bug was a doozy.

  3. "Empty Nest" is a myth. They never really go away. Sure, there might be only two in the house - but their soap opera will stay with you - forever - whether you want it or not.

  4. Bill, who exactly are you today?! I'm laughing so hard I can hardly type!

Yes, I know. And we have three soap operas going on, some more dramatic than others. But at least now they will be happening outside the house.

  5. Now if only husbands would pick up wet towels and recap that shampoo bottles too!

  6. Ooh, what's the new room going to be?? Library?? Movie room?? Nap room?? All such fun decisions!

Congratulations! A quiet house is indeed a blessing!

  7. Two years ago I had a pair of blue birds build a nest in one of my hanging baskets on my balcony. They raised two chicks and disappeared for about two weeks, but they returned and had a second brood - three chicks. I was watching the day that they learned to fly. They've never returned but I keep hoping. Like my own kids, I miss having them around.

  8. I hear you! My oldest son, now 38, has Asperger's Syndrome and will probably always live at home. While he's high-functioning, he isn't able to make a living for himself in order to get his own place, and we can't afford to get him a flat. I love him dearly, but I'm exhausted from being a hands-on mother for two decades. Taking care of him, and both of my parents before they died, has destroyed my own health. C'est la vie -- we do what we must!

We have a similar room above our garage; how I'd love to finish and decorate it as my private office!

Enjoy your new role and congrats!

Il est TRES joli Ton nid d'oiseaux...

  10. Well, I think I'm offended by that statement, Daryl! ;)

As far as Meat and Potato Head....yea, yea, yea! How wonderful for him...and you! As I can totally relate to the dribbling shampoo bottle, wet bathroom floor, mountains of laundry and cooking for the kids!
Can't wait to hear about the renovations! :)

  12. Congratulations on the empty nest! My son is 31, and I love him to death, but it's good when they get their own place! Good both ways, too! Enjoy!

Glad to hear you're feeling better. that doesn't sound like it was fun.

  13. You sound like a very healthy mother! Not pining about the empty nest...or bat cave! LOL.

Fiddler on the Roof brings back lots of happy memories for me. My sister and I used to watch that all the time (partially to get a glimpse of the shtetl life that our ancestors lived) and then years later my sister had her moment on the stage as one of the daughters in an outdoor musical version.

  15. Love the nest photo and great commentary. LOL!

Like the old song says, "Happy days are here again ......".

Chicken soup and hot Lemonade is hard to beat.

I haven't been by in a while. I hope you are feeling better.

    Thanks for the visit,
    Troy and Martha

PS: Yes, N. C. Wyeth clouds. I love his illustrations. One of my favorite artists. I have several original editions of "Children's Books" illustrated by him.

  17. Have fun decorating the nest!

Like David, I miss having my kids around. But I don't miss arguing with my oldest about our differing philosophies on laundry room etiquette. His disregard of my desires about how to handle someone else's (read that as mine) clothes in the dryer still makes me hot under the collar.

    ReplyDelete
  18. You mean taking the (my) clean clothes out of the dryer and throwing them in a big wad on the floor, before inserting their own wet clothes? Or better yet, throwing their 14 pair of wet jeans in with my already dry delicate undies and pressing the heavy duty button? :P

  19. Mr Meat & Potato Head LMAO! Does he know you have just given him blog infamy forever!?

  20. I love the quote! It is definitely quite a milestone in life, having your kids move out! (I love that you call your boys' room "The Bat Cave").

  21. You're going to miss him. It will be very quiet.

  22. An empty nest gathers more books does it not.

  23. I can't wait to hear about the remodeling of the bat cave. It will be a big adjustment, but time goes on and he'll be just down the street. Such funny comments about the laundry :)

  24. Yes Willow, that is exactly what I mean. Just the thought makes me want to growl!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nobody says it like Erma! Congratulations on your empty nest!!!! We had a prolonged wait. I finally said " You have got to move out so The Mister and I can find out if we even like each other! We've never been alone long enough to find out. (we do)
    Cute post!

  27. That's an exciting time for all of you! Glad to hear you are on the mend...

  28. Oh....hoorah!

Will the bat cave become guest quarters or a writing aerie?

    Before and after photos, please.

    Love the Bombeck quote

  29. Oh, Erma,
I read her daily in the Washington Post! I have yet to experience the ENS, what with four it does take a while until they all are ready to fly the coop. Right now, I am confident I will throw party on that day, after all I have tried to enjoy them every single day since they were born, a little breather will do me good, I guess. ;-)

  30. Hi Willow - I busted a gut at your description of the 'bat cave' - I have two sons also so related well - they are young men now with their own families - after they left home, we circled the wagons for awhile, but then we got the hang of it and have never looked back and the best part is, grandchildren!

  31. Erma called it as it is. Our three are basically gone but just warning you they don't really ever clean all their stuff out of the house. It's annoying too. The things they leave behind are all the memorabilia that reminds you of all the things you enjoyed as they grew up so sadly you can't easily dispose of anything. The truth is, when I get a bit sentimental, I will spend a little time just reading old journals and looking at the old photos. Where did the time go?

  32. I have to agree with Marie. Hubby is away and suddenly the house is staying tidy.No soggy towels on the floor!

I would hijack the boys belfry for yourself if I were you.

  33. A difficult time I know and time is what it takes to adjust. having him so near is a blessing as I am sure you know.
I love that quote, so apt.

  34. Willow, what a fabulous week of posts- you must be feeling better. I read them all, but I’m posting on this one because I love the bird nest photo and your words about becoming a happy empty nester. What a big moment in your life!
