Palm Sunday

I saw this painting a few years ago at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
It is called Entry of Christ into Jerusalem by Anthony van Dyck,
painted in 1617. It is a big, bold painting with wonderful bright colors.
The reds and blues are so amazingly vivid after all these years. It is
among my favorites in IMA's collection. If you are ever passing
through Indy, I highly recommend taking the afternoon to visit this
museum. Their sizable collection of art is housed in a beautiful
building, along with the historic Lilly House and gardens.

Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and having salvation,
gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt,
the foal of a donkey.
I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the war-horses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth.

Zechariah 9:9-10

  1. That is a wonderful painting. So is the Michael Sowa... I love his work - so whimsical and surreal. Do you know his book, "A Bear Called Sunday". I don't, but I have to get it now, it looks enchanting.

  3. The painting is indeed beautiful. As I read the portion of Zechariah underneath the painting, my brain started singing a choral section of Messiah by Handel.
