I am cast as Jesus in the passion play―
not because my hair is long or the right color,
but that Jewish thing
when I gaze at the ceiling―
none of the guys could do it right.
I pose with a sheet, well-placed rod―
my own crown of thorns,
sexy sandals,
do an amazing Bela Lugosi―
invite the audience to eat my flesh, drink.
It is very old wine―
hope you like.
I wait, patiently, for a nosebleed,
a basket of fish and chips―
I am Jesus. I bid you welcome.
*Feast in the House of Simon, 1610, El Greco

ReplyDeletei got to see the passion play in Germany. Ill never forget "jesus" riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. For just a moment my eyes dilated and I sat back in my chair.
ReplyDeleteA delightfully heretical take on scripture. Nice one, Tess!
