Beige

You wake up one day,
and think beige

economically gather all the color
and drop it at Goodwill
because you're taking the plunge, baby.

Or maybe it just comes gradually,
over several laissez-faire years,
one well-crafted piece at a time.

When the hair goes all-white,
salon-beige is the politically correct option
or at least something in champagne.

It's easy since there's no bother
with coordinating wardrobe it's all the same.
"Honey, does this make me look beige?"

Many thanks to the talented R.A.D. Stainforth for reading this poem.

  1. I bought a new Toyota Carina (Asian model) in Singapore in 1981. It was beige. A friend saw it and exclaimed, "Oh, BORING beige!" I was crushed. I thought beige was a kind of grown-up thing. Maybe that's why I bought red shoes last week: Now that I'm "grown up" I need/want some color in my life! Screw age appropriate! ;)

  6. Comes a time, though, you don't want a color to clash with your personality. Beige. It's like a neutral's neutral.

  9. At one point I had a beige sofa w/a brown carpet. When I moved, I added lots more color. My friend commented, oh now I see what your taste is! I hadn't even noticed how boring the first place had been decorated! At least no one could see the stains on the carpet!

  10. Beige, rhymes with age. As presented in my take on them, I know that George and Martha would approve of their hair being compared to champaign. And can you please get them two more glasses?

  11. My '99 Toyota is beige, and the color has held up better than I have. Your take was both warm and witty.

  12. Couldn't help laughing at this one- the beige age will never grab me if I live to be a hundred! It's one colour that makes me feel - and look- dead as a dodo.

  15. Maybe the very word 'Beige' should be eradicated from the dictionary. It makes me think of coats, jumpers, and interior walls; but all in a bad way!

  24. This is one of your funnier poems! It made me lol, and I only use that literally! "Ah, it is time! Let me redo my entire wardrobe!" Does that moment really happen in people's lives? Is there really any other explanation?

  26. This is fantastic, I was smiling the whole time. God I wish I could write as beautifully as you do. Where I live I see a lot of elderly people with outrageously dyed hair, high school rebellion-style. I actually think its wonderful =)
