One-cigarette poems

R.A.D. Stainforth's sexy read...inspired by the one cigarette he smokes while reading...

One-cigarette poems

hang sexy and impatient,
hand-rolled thought-bubbles
combust smooth and easy.

Pluck them fast
inhale, before they sprout nervous wings
and take flight.

Pen them down, taste,
capture the essence as it smolders,
circles the ashtray,

spellbound in the mouth,
taking a chance,
bulletproof, addictive.

  3. Yes, this smoking issue is loaded on all sides. I am a recovering alcoholic using AA. The meetings are more comfortable for some of us now that smoking is not allowed, but one disruption in our groups now comes from the smokers getting up and leaving all the time in order to smoke outside.

Back in the eighties in our area, alcoholics rented their own space to keep smoking legal in the meetings. In many AA locations smoking kept up until the ban in all public spaces was enacted here in Oregon. The non smokers understood among us or else went somewhere else to have non-smoking meetings.

The alcoholic smokers (still the majority of AAs) overwhelmingly will not sit a whole hour without going out at least once for a smoke. I notice they can do it in the movies though. Even though I have been a non-smoker for thirty two years my next anniversary, I would still accept smoking around me under certain circumstances, even though my clothes noticeably stink. In fact they pick up odor just sitting next to many smokers not smoking at the moment.

However. I am really happy about my smokeless car.

  4. Chesterfields, eh? Noted.

Am not a smoker. I realize the health hazards. And yet... I can still appreciate the fascination with smoking, the aura that it lends to a character. The classic movies would not have been the same without it. While I dislike being closed in a small space with cigarette smoke, I rather enjoy it when others smoke out of doors and in large venues. I think I appreciate it more as a selective and occasional indulgence. Anything that takes over someone's life and makes them a slave is sad, whether it's smokes or drinks or cell phone use or whatever.

Selective vice used as spice - that's nice!

  6. Addictive is right! Makes me want to start again after 8+ years of being smoke free - apart from the odd mini cigar that is!! This poem is addictive.

  7. How romantic, macho, cavalier
    does the drooping fag appear
from the writer's mouth as he reflects
on life in words and phrases.
    'Til the image is smudged
by the gasping death throes of a life
    snatched too soon.

  12. Haven't had a cigarette in a year. If it wasn't almost 9 pm on a snowy Sunday, I would run out and buy myself a pack after reading this. Great poem. Reggie

  14. I smoke about four cigarettes a year in a big year. When I saw the prompt I remembered the last time I mindfully enjoyed a cigarette and realized.... so I wrote it. :~)

Love the opportunity here... and I feel (oddly) more connected with you now via your poem.

  22. I had to share this with my Smoker Obsessed Brother In Law. While he no longer is a smoker... He is fascinated with the addiction. He collects photos of smokers. And he truly appreciated your poetry.

  26. the subject matter almost takes over here. lovely poem, example of taking something right in front of you and making art. my son watched his dad die of lung cancer, taking him to his chemo appointments etc. i am glad to say doing this persuaded my son to stop smoking.
