autoclave

R.A.D. Stainforth ... with his cigarette ... in his black and white world ...

Autoclave

image: ParkeHarrison
There's no hegemony here;
all the red tape is kept
in a ball under the sink,
along with the cat food
and the emergency vodka.

Stacks of shared interests
spill from the sofa
onto the floor
and down the hall,
leaning towers of solidarity.

If anyone asks,
say we've been in Goodwill,
implementing endless pleasure
with short-term memory,
where every line ends in a kiss.

Random note of interest:

R.A.D. Stainforth tells me he lost one of his eyes as a child, in a freak beaver accident.  When he's not wearing it, he keeps the faux eye in an icy-cold glass of Russian vodka.  He won't say which eye.  It's hard to tell.  I'm thinking maybe it's the left.

  1. Tess, I like the poem very much--I'm not sure I understand the link with the photo (which I also really like), except (duh!) I guess for the nesting aspect. And now as I read the poem a few more times, seem more sure of that. I love the idea of the shared interests sprawling down the hall in towers (I have been in apartments like that) ,and the red tape balled with the vodka. K.

Love it. That's what makes a house a home. (or a nest)

  4. This is crazy good. Love what RAD adds to the mix...and the bit at the end about the eye is too wonderful.

  5. This reminds me of my parents' homes. Clutter, clutter, clutter; but nice interesting clutter, mind you!

If only short-term memory were that beautiful, giving out endless pleasure. More like trapped in a time warp, somewhere between today and 50 years ago.

  9. Love it. It sounds as if the house is a real home and not a show piece home.
Love the 'shared interest spilling off the sofa' Anything shared has to be good.
    Great write and read.

  10. i like the verse...it gives me the feel though it is a front you know...autoclave being a machine to sterilize, so tell them this...

  11. Tess, I had an overwhelming urge to pluck the cigarette from his fingers, pour myself a shot of vodka (on rocks) and pick up the kitty! Wonderful poem.

  12. I'd been concerned about Stainforth's smoking. But now that I see he has a black cat I feel much kinder toward him.

  13. Very cool- I had 2 friends- with one glass eye; it can be disconcerting
until you learn to not be bothered by its drifting- :)

  16. This sounds like my place; shared interests taking over the living space.

I take note of the date and tell you I have a false leg, which knows when it's being pulled!

  17. I have no idea where that cat came from ... has anyone else noticed the date today ...

  18. Catfish: from what I understand Stainforth wears a black patch while his eye soaks in the vodka...

  20. oh I love this poem. echoes
a delicious film noir and also
the type of quiet life that
    smolders underneath with erotica
    and intelligence.

  22. Hey Tess! Inventive and image riddled poem as usual, but keeping the emergency vodka in with the red tape? What if you fumble when a real emergency jumps at you? Red tape needs to be 'returned to sender'!
BTW, the pic of the glass eye in the mouth! That is gross. Reminds me of a childhood friend who lost an eye and would hold the glass one in his mouth to moisten it before popping it back. I would gag every time!

  29. Wonderfully laconic, Tess! Great prompt too. I started a poem with the lines, 'East, west, home's best / hole in ground or cuckoo's nest' and then it stalled!

  30. I think you should use the photo of the eye in the vodka glass as a future prompt actually - it made me smile! Lovely poem, as always!!!

  34. Nesting at his own time! I wonder what size the egg if there is! And the resultant off-spring! Whew! A home is where one is relaxed.

  35. Maybe a faulty autoclave - it all sounds rather messy and delightfully lover-ly.

  36. I think it is the left eye as well:-) Your poem sat well with me...and the prompt took me a while to get a spark, but I did so thank you!

  37. "the red tape is kept under the sink" Love it!!!

You just about had me on this one, I was stumped but finally it came to me. These are such fantastic challenges, you make me stretch my wings of imagination. Thank you.
