Welcome to the Third Annual Willow Manor Ball ~!

Welcome to the Willow Manor Ball!  The cyber event of the season is finally here. We have rolled back the carpets of the main hall. Valentino said there's nothing like tile for dancing the tango, but hardwood floors are the next best thing. The manor is bathed in romantic candlelight and the side tables are smothered in my favorite yellow roses.

Please check into the comment section and let us know you've arrived, and who might be accompanying you.  If you would like us to visit your blog, to fully appreciate your lovely attire and date, make sure you sign into the Mr. Linky widget provided at the end of this post.

Thank you so much for coming. I do hope you enjoy the evening, which is miraculously lasting all day long. Remember, everyone who leaves a comment today will be considered a guest and included in the drawing for one of two elegant door prizes. So, please come in and enjoy the manor magic!

On with the dance! let joy be unconfined;
No sleep till morn, when Youth and Pleasure meet
To chase the glowing hours with flying feet.
George Gordon, Lord Byron

The ball is scheduled to start tonight at 12:00 midnight sharp, but my dearest friends, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Eugen Jan Boissevain drove all the way from Steepletop in their open Cadillac roadster, arriving scandalously early.  Fresh from the bath, I greet them in my white fluffy terrycloth robe, hair towel wrapped.

I invite them to make them selves comfortable by the fire, while I attend to making myself glamorous.  Edna looks fabulous in a smart black cashmere coat and Russian style Persian lamb hat.  I'm so envious.  Wonder if she'll consider a swap for my Doctor Zhivago hat?

My escort for the evening is the charming George Sanders, who arrives, back from the other side, arm in arm with his cast from All About Eve, a delightful surprise, since I've always wanted to meet the formidable Bette Davis. As I take her hand, she promptly announces, "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night."  She obviously knows something is up, because the minute she steps aside to chat with Cro Magnon and Lesley Hornby, Zsa Zsa Gabor appears out of nowhere and takes the arm of her former third husband, who happens to be my date.

Feeling completely jilted, Sir Anthony Hopkins arrives and gives me that killer gaze with those blue-blue eyes. He is such a dear and never misses a manor ball. I made sure we have plenty of his favorite liver, with some fava beans and a nice chianti. As he comes in close for a quick hug, I "accidentally" spill my glass of red wine on Zsa Zsa's white silk gown. Oopsies!  I whisk her off to the powder room for a tidy up.

No sooner than I lose Ms. Gabor, a sultry Marilyn Monroe has taken her place. It seems my dear Mr. Sanders is in high demand this evening.  I smile wryly in their direction, with small eyes, and head toward the dance floor to find one solace in of my favorite crushes, the dashing Charles Simic. Maybe I can coax him into reciting some of his fabulous poetry while we take a spin on the dance floor? It's sure to make me weak in the knees and possibly catch the attention of my distracted date. Perhaps if I swoon, George will forget that pesky Marilyn and rush to catch me. It's worth a try.

Not only does Charles whisper enchanting words in my ear, he has me locked in quite a firm grip. You know that "thing" I have for hands, and this particular poet wins the Nobel Prize for Manly Hands this evening. Oh, look, he's wearing a pinkie ring. Love that. Not only are his hand nice, his feet are as light as his words. I so adore the dance of words on a page.  After I disengage my self from Mr. Simic's lusty hold, and steady myself enough to walk across the floor, I am thrilled to spot my good friend, the amazingly spry George Bernard Shaw, waltzing with a striking woman.  Could it be Vita Sackville-West?  Oh, Vita, daaaling! Or might it be the beautiful, enigmatic Virginia Woolf?

Please excuse me for a moment, and make yourself comfortable on this divan, while Alan Rickman recites Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Act I, Scene V, one of my particular favorites.

Make me a willow cabin at your gate,
And call upon my soul within the house;
Write loyal cantons of contemned love
And sing them loud even in the dead of night;
Halloo your name to the reverberate hills
And make the babbling gossip of the air
Cry out 'Olivia!' O, You should not rest
Between the elements of air and earth,
But you should pity me!

Don't forget Annie Leibovitz is here, wearing her trademark basic black, armed with her personal digital camera, taking candid shots for the December issue of Vogue, so make sure you and your guest find her and pose extra dramatically. After hearing the history of the manor ghosts, she is concentrating on the front stairway, hoping to get a rare shot of our whispy lady in white. It's highly improbable, though, since she only makes her ghostly appearances between 3:00 and 4:30 a. m.

Speaking of ghosts, Mae West is holding a seance in the candlelit library, in case you're interested. She is set on conjuring Rudlph Valentino back for the evening, rose firmly planted in her teeth, her ample cleavage powdered.

What am I wearing tonight?  Well, I found the most lovely white vintage organdy gown in Paris last week, but it is as stiff as Miss Havisham's wedding cake.  After a dance or two, I find I can't get nearly as close to my partner as required.  I slip upstairs and make a quick change into this fabulous strapless dress worn by Linda Christian on the cover of Vogue in January of 1949. Amazing how much I favor her in the dress. Accordion pleats are perfect for twirling. Now, I can tango the night away in sheer bliss. Shh!  Don't tell, but I have my beloved woolly socks underneath.

You've probably heard by now, that our Master of Ceremonies is once again the indomitable Leonard Cohen, who arrived a little while ago by helicopter on the front lawn, with a bevy of swinging backup babes. I requested "Dance Me to the End of Love", for openers. Stand back ladies, I have reserved his first dance. What's this in his hand? Oh my, dearest Lenny, you shouldn't have! I do believe he has brought me some kind of sparkly gift. He's so sweet, he know's what a magpie I am.

There are crates of marvelous vintage champagne in the cellar, I've been saving for this special occasion, as well as a bar set up with all kinds of goodies.  I've instructed the bar tenders to make delicious and very old fashioned "Last Word" cocktails.  (2 oz gin, 1oz green chartreuse, 1/2 oz maraschino, and 1/2 fresh cut squeezed lime, shake, add a fresh bing cherry for cuteness)  Cheers!  Feel free to throw your glasses and crash them into the fireplace, since they are cyber glasses, after all.

I don't know about you, but all this twirling around the dance floor has made me ravenous. Please help yourself to some of this decadent food.  We've once again spared no expense in hiring the most exquisite caterers in town. Scottish quail eggs are on the menu this year in honor of my Scorbie ancestors. My DNA is definitely tingling. If you see Tom Hanks anywhere near that caviar garnish, shoo him away. He scrapes the entire thing onto his plate every year. Gosh, he just can't get over that You've Got Mail thing. Thank goodness he's no longer sporting that stringy Da Vinci Code hair.  Save room for my favorite part, dessert!  Please don't be shy. Cyber desserts are completely calorie free, remember? Yes, it's that same lethal chocolate mousse we served last year, only this time, it's without that strange Drambuie and mustard concoction, that made everyone grab the nearest partner and head for the privacy of a potted palm.

It's a gorgeous, balmy evening. Let's take a stroll out to the gazebo, shall we? Maybe I can find Mr. Sanders and Ms. Monroe out here amount the shrubberies. Wait, isn't this her shoe? No, it's Mrs. Manion's panties. Near the tennis court, I see an amazon of a woman emerging from the darkness. Oh my gosh, George, is that you?  Sanders strolls up, hides the blonde wig behind his back and quickly attempts to remove the bright red lipstick with his breast pocket hankie. Oh well, I'm certainly not disappointed, since my dance card was filled with all my charming bloggy friends, as well as the dreamy Mr. Simic. After dancing until the wee hours this morning, it's time now for my beauty sleep. Sigh. It's been a magical evening. Please do stop in around noon tomorrow  for brunch, daalings, and we'll catch up on all the delicious ball scuttlebutt.

Ta-ta, my friends!
Sweet dreams!
Thank you for making
The Manor Ball a smashing success!

  1. Glenn, it's obviously your larger than life personality that gives such an all encompassing impression. I'm so glad you've survived the dueling field. Why not join me for a quiet drink and a chat and forget about the whiners?

  2. Lady Gaga in the house?

Oh! please make her sing and play Papparazi on the baby grand.

  3. Oh Willow, I've been so unavoidably detained...we (Yuri and I) are trying to get out of Russia and wend our way over the seas in time for the brunch. Somehow I even managed to screw up my URL with this intermittent wireless coverage that we are getting. The storms are abating, and we are winging our way towards the manor. Hopefully we will see you all soon :)

  4. Hugh O'Brien has challenged everyone
to a Western fast draw contest
    over near the Garden Shed.
This is pure Hollywood style, no
    swivvle holsters or waxed leather
or short barrels here. All competitors
will be issued a fake Colt .45 and
western holster. So far the drawing
    card includes Gary Cooper,
    Randolph Scott, Glenn Ford,
    Ben Johnson, Roy Rogers,
    William Boyd, John Wayne,
    Gene Autry, Burt Lancaster,
    Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef,
    Lee Marvin, Yul Brynner, Steve
    McQueen, Burt Reynolds,
    John Russell, Robert Mitchum,
    John Payne, Rory Calhoun,
    Audie Murphy, Ed Harris,
    Viggo Mortensen, Robert Duvall,
    Tommy Lee Jones, Richard
    Boone, Paul Newman, Kevin
    Costner, Kirk Russell, Tom
    Selleck, Sam Elliott, Bob Dylan,
    Buster Crabbe, and Carrie-Ann
Moss (can't seem to keep her
    out of these contests).

  5. I must say, this cyber ball is quite a hit! While waiting at the dentists, I was able to flirt outrageously with Clark Gable (he didn't even turn his head to look at Mae West and Jean Harlow!) and then Patrick Swazey insisted we step back out on the floor. I must apologize, because Clint was only trying to emulate our moves on the dance floor when he raised his partner into the air and broke the vintage chandelier... Now off I go to take my daughter back to school. I'm actually looking forward to this evening as I wait for them during dance class...

  6. Nino, Lady Gaga?? What is she wearing? That is THE question. I'm sure it can't beat Yoli's fabulous antler headdress!

  7. Well Derrick, you are a gentleman
for sure, and I would love to
join you for a quiet drink.
I think Marty Scorsese is still
over by the fire place, and now
he is talking to Roger Ebert
    about Japanese cinema.
I have been fueled up on
diet Cokes, so my own speech
will be rapid fire I fear.

  8. The amount of work and joy and love you've put into this celebration is just so incredible that I had to comment again!

Agnes de Mille said 'To dance is to be out of yourself. Larger, more beautiful, more powerful. This is power, it is glory on earth and it is yours for the taking.' You've given your heart into this and made all of us dance. Thank you.

  9. Leslie, I've been patiently waiting the arrival of Yuri Zhivago. Not that I'm not excited to see you, my dear friend! But those eyes. I must gaze into those dreamy pools of eyes.

  10. Jo, thank you, dear friend. It has truly been a labor of joy and love. I raise my glass in a toast to the power of dance! Cheers!!! xx

  11. Miss Willow, I must say that even
    the most spirited Magpie Tales
    challenge, or responses to your
    fabulous recipes has never
    garnered over 200 comments,
and that is not counting the
    100 or so already gathered
    at the divers blogs already
logged in. I guess 200 is the
    magic number. Heading on
this way, you will have 400
    by early afternoon, and then
    500 before dinner. How many,
some of the curious want to
    know, comments and responses
did the 2nd Annual Ball get
last year. Is this the largest
    attendance so far?

  12. David Sedaris and I are toasting you right this moment with that delicious cocktail. He hopes to claim a dance with you soon ... if I may have a waltz with one of your most debonair gentlemen!

  13. i think the only thing that's kept me from being skewered by Glenn was the fact that I had a t-bone on my face and was unrecognizable. Thank heaven's Willow has one of those Cracker Barrel tee games to keep Dinosaur Hand out of further embarrassing trouble. My date is bored with me and has moved on to Anthony Hopkins--comparing dinner dates I'm sure.

  18. OMG, there is a kilt wearing
    affair over in the Scottish
    corner. Sean Connery arrived
    surrounded by two young
    and beautiful ladies, and his
legs still look good. Mel Gibson,
    sobered up some, put on
    his braveheart Tux and kilt
    from the Oscar celebration,
    and Sean thumbed his nose
    at Mel. Several other real
    highlanders objected to Mel's Aussie
antics, and he turned and flipped
up the kilt and mooned the
    bunch of them. Leonard Cohen
    smoothed things over, but
    Mel is sulking they say.
And if that is not enough,
    I hear Colin Farrell arrived
wearing a full length mink Tux,
and when he whipped it off
    he was very naked underneath.
    He is powerfully endowed, you
know, and he likes to streak
    affairs to further his myth.
    Oliver Stone, who directed him
    in ALEXANDER is laughing
his butt off now. He reported
that Colin used to drop trow
on a regular basis on his set,
    and chase the donut girls,
and threaten the best boys and
    grips.

  19. Everybody check out the north
    corner of the ballroom, for
    JFK is waltzing with Marilyn
    Monroe, and Arthur Miller and
    Joe DeMaggio are arm
    wrestling for the pleasure
    of the next dance. Then
    Ernest Hemingway showed
up again this year and he
    challenged both of them
    to a "real man's" Arm
    wrestling challenge. Before
    long we had Marlon Brando
    and John Saxon there too.
    What a spirited affair, dear
    mistress Willow; sword dueling
    contests, western fast draw
    contests, and now Arm Wrestling
    challenges. Oh damn, now
Sly Stallone has arrived, and he
is rolling up his white shirt for
a crack at the wrestling table.

  20. Glenn Buttkus, David Sedaris and I want to sit at your table! Please. (Neither of us knew that about Colin Farrell, although we've imagined, of course.) Love your commentary.

  21. Poets,
Willow has a laptop in her kitchen! Mary and I managed a quick post or two. And somehow I posted two poems in between.

    Shhh. Don't tell her...

    Darling Leonard. Uuhhmmm...dance?

    Come closer? Cheek to cheek?

    ninotaziz is in heaven.

  22. What is that peculiar scent? I've heard those kilts of Braveheart yore were actually stained with urine. Let's have Mel step outside on the patio. The roses are beginning to wilt!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Uh-oh, Marilyn's getting a little tipsy and trying to sing Happy Birthday to JFK again. Somebody please go fish her out of the fountain.

  24. I'm all aglow from the dancing - time to refresh my glass of champagne, maybe go out onto the grounds to get some air. Yes, Timothy is accompanying me. He is a perfect gentleman.

  25. Hey! Who just pinched my arse?? Tom? Is that you?

    ReplyDelete
  26. thanks for the invitation willow. Hope there's some jazz on the menu. I'm bringing Fyodor Dostoevsky.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oops! Reya, I'm afraid that might be Tom's pesky little Dino Hand.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i just went 6 rounds with Willow on the dance floor and needed some air, so yes Reya, I am out in the garden smelling some of summer's last roses. Please don't hold me accountable for Mr. Hand's wild antics.

And warn me if Glenn is about, I think he's out for blood tonight.

  29. ...oh, and last time i heard, A.Hopkins and my date were in the study watching the Vampire Chronicles whilst snacking on 'finger' foods.

  30. I can make it after all! So thrilled. Gary Oldman just picked me up in the limo and we're whizzing to the airport where the jet is waiting.

  31. Willow,
I am so glad I found a moment with you...I hope you don't mind. I sneaked a peak on-line on your lap-top in the kitchen. My interview with Poets United was posted today...

So this is turning out to be a most memorable evening...

But it is almost 3.00am now. And I am afraid I have to leave soon. '

Thank you for being such a wonderful host.

  32. Clive and I are running a little late. When you hear what happened you won't be a bit surprised. He is such a naughty boy!!!

  33. This has been a fabulous evening...thank you so much...magical! I do apologize for the small fire in the gazebo...Inspector Clouseau just recently took up pipe smoking...no worry Kato is a master carpenter. Mr. Poirot has been a dear but he speaks in the first person and it does get tedious, also his heavy accent...sometime I feel I'm playing Charades! I understand the language of love but everything else is a blurr.
These 'drinks' are totally wonderful and could be affecting my hearing...I'm seeing so many faces...the stars are all here tonight. I'm off to that potted palm...Viggo Mortensen awaits! Thank you again for this magical evening!

  34. Oh, Willow, your ball is absolutely grand! I've just had a spin with Ruth's Mr. Darcy and I'm having the time of my life. I think I might even be a bit tipsy already and it's not even midnight... I never imagined cyber balls could be such fun!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well, Willow, how enchanting it all is! You outdid yourself. This will be featured all over the society pages, of course. I love that all these wonderful people from our past have graced us with their presence. And oolala--how lovely you look in that dress!

Cin-cin--I'm raising a glass in your honor. What a fabulous night!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ah! Willow! Finally I've tracked down our hostess. How do you keep up with greeting all the guests and finding time to eat and dance? No wonder you make this a 24-hour affair!

You have outdone yourself this go-'round. I zipped over briefly, as my own schedule is fairly hectic this week, but I had to say hello! No date, and no Zorro duds, just a plain black tuxedo. (Well, as "plain" as a tux gets, that is.)

I won't have time to meet all the guests whom I'd like to, but I would like to admonish Mr. Sanders -- whom I've long admired -- for being somewhat of a cad earlier. Then again, what can one expect from someone who referred to himself as a "cad" in his autobiography, eh? And I must ask Mr. Cohen if he minded my use of "Dance Me to the End of Love" in one of my earliest Silver Fox stories.

    Great time!

    ReplyDelete
  37. willow, nora barnacle will not be in attendance so you are welcome to dance with mr. joyce once we finish the next tango.

off to swoon by the punch bowl.......

  38. I am there in thought via a special tribute to my would-be escort, Tony Curtis.

You have outdone yourself this year to create an evening of fantasy and splendor for all of your guests. Lovely, lovely. Enjoy one and all.

  39. Daaahling Willow, At last Brooks has safely negotiated the drive and here I am. A little late - but fashionably so - and the party just seems to be starting!
A number of people have already been kind enough to compliment me on my dress. To be strictly truthful, it belonged to my mother - Fortuny black silk with just the teeniest of Venetian glass bead decoration. But then, dear Willow I am sure that you would recognise that.
As I anticipated so many ravishing people here tonight, I am confident of securing the attention of some dashing young man who will amuse me through until breakfast.

And now, I am going in search of that delicious Champagne!

    ReplyDelete
  40. It is so wonderful to be here among so many fine people in such a beautiful setting. The ball is such a highlight, and the champagne is divine! I do think I will try to find Lady Gaga, since it was mentioned she was here!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Uh-oh. I had a funny feeling when Sir Anthony requested more fava beans and chianti.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I was able to break away from my other commitments for a minute and check in with your gala. Willow, the place looks FABULOUS! And so many people here!

After I get a drink I'll be pushing my way through the crowd to talk to my favorite singer Leonard Cohen. Did he sing "Hallelujah" yet? I hope not.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh, Mary Ann, that silly Clouseau! I'm glad he's got Kato in tow, for the repairs. He does come in handy. I thought I saw the Silver Hornet out front!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Edith, you are just breathtaking in this little beaded number! Your steamer trunks arrived safely ahead of time and I instructed the staff to have your room laid out, complete with mints and a fresh yellow rose on the pillow!

  45. Oh this is so much fun.... the 1st dance was with the Lovely LadyCat!
She knows just how to follow me around the dance floor showing off her gorgeous pink gown. She looks so divine...
And the wines are marvelous! And I agree with Mr. Toast.. the chocolate mousse is to die for!!
I always wondered about George Sanders... that little sneak, trying to steal the show again with his impersonations... which I might add are not too bad. :)
Your dancing gown is just perfect: it is so very much YOU!!...
What's that I hear? More crashing of glasses into the fireplace.. how marvelously wonderful... the sound!! I better keep my eyes on Fred.. he is looking very mysteriously at my Lady Catherine...I know he can dance..but thats far as it goes..hee hee... with his toothpick legs.. how dare him!!
Yes.. as we continue on with all these lovely gala trimmings I'm finding so many celebs... Willow, how you do turn those celeb's heads...you definitely have the touch... I'm so glad you Zah Zah in.. I hope she won't have to go back into the hospital though.. well, on with the dancing... I must spot my favorite dancer, my Lady Catherine... :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Willow, my dear, how divine you look! And what a lovely, inspired occasion!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Willow, my humble and heart felt thanks for letting me escape my Black Dog for as long as it took to write this. You have no idea how much it means to me. I can't believe I made it.

I have to tell you Willow it was Sophis's determination to meet you that I considered coming to your world renown soiree. She was dying to meet you and kabitz with all your guests. Now that we're here We'll mingle, visit the martini bar and then it's on to tango through the night.

  54. Rel, you're not late at all, my friend. It's thrilling to finally meet the gorgeous Ms. Loren, and I see she's already heading across the room to greet one of her famous co-stars, Cary Grant, who's here with Renee Finberg.

    ReplyDelete

  58. Stand back, gentlemen! Mr. MacLean has just requested the last dance of the evening. I am very honored, indeed.

  63. No, no. it's certainly not time for the last dance. Mr. MacLean just asked me to reserve it for him, and I penciled it on that last line in my dance card. The night is still young!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. You speak French? I didn't know, Willow. How cool.

And yes indeed I believe that is lipstick on Tim's collar ... and my hair is a bit disheveled. What? My dress is on backwards? Oops.

Must go freshen up! Tim and I had a lovely "walk" around the grounds.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Oh thank God I almost messed myself at the thought of having to go. I must admit when this whole affair is over I do plan to invite Mr. Owen back for a night cap among other things. I just hope Martha won't be to difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  66. OK. I'm back, ready to dance and sip champagne again.

Yes it is a lovely smile on my face, indeed. Wonderful party. Oh yeah.

    ReplyDelete
  67. reya, you little devil you! i thought i saw the bushes shaking when i for some fresh air in the garden...

thank god, willow, the night is not yet over. mr. feynman was just about to explain quantum electrodynamics to me but i'm suddenly feeling lightheaded --- must be those manhattans lady gaga made when she took a turn at bartending!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Kristen, no-no, please stay! The evening crowd hasn't even arrived yet!

Reya, let me help you pick those pine needles off the front of your dress. Oops~you're right~it is the back!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Is that who made those Manhattans? I must get her recipe. I had one and they were delicious, strong but delicious.

Oh look I can tie a knot with the stem of my cherry. I didn't realize I could still do that.

Oh I had better stop this Clive is eyeing me and we may go for a "walk"

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'm peeping down at you all through the bannisters and hoping gorgeous darling Dudley will bring me a Babycham and some Twiglets when he's finished playing the piano for you all.

  71. Daaaling Willow I have no intention of leaving just yet I am having too much fun. This party is a wonderful party.

    ReplyDelete
  72. kristen, stop teasing poor clive with that cherry stem trick!

and my, there's a lot of 'activity' going on in the bushes this evening, miss willow!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Oh Lucille - Dudley is really something boy can he tickle the ivory!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Amanda did you happen to hear what he did to me before we arrived?

    ReplyDelete
  75. It's always a lively party.

Hey I just saw Steven (Golden Fish). He is heading down to the champagne cellar to do i ching readings. Sounds like so much fun.

I wonder what Mr. Feynman would make of this??

    ReplyDelete
  76. Where is Lady Gaga? I want to try one of those manhattans!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Wonderful willow! The cast of guests is undeniably diverse and elegant. I am off to walk the grounds and meet people. Perhaps I shall take a stroll through the garage, I have it on good authority there are some unusual vehicles in there!

    ReplyDelete
  78. i think i saw gaga headed out for a 'walk'............but with whom? was it tom? anthony hopkins? or was it clive.........that nasty devil...

    ReplyDelete
  79. Honey there are more then just vehicles in that garage right now!

    ReplyDelete
  80. WHAT!?! Well we will see about that. I wonder were Alan Rickman went off with. I must find him post haste!

    ReplyDelete
  81. kristen, i'm afraid to ask what he did to you!!

better keep an eye on that guy, i think gaga is trying to steal him from you..

    ReplyDelete
  82. Amanda you must read about it yourself but I warn you he is a very naughty boy!

    http://www.livinginthemiddle.com/2010/09/prior-to-my-arrival.html

    ReplyDelete
  83. willow, I've made it! I've waited a whole year, and at last I've made it! Just let me get a quick G and T in, and then I'll have a look around. Darling!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Much though I hate to be a party pooper, Willow, I've been dancing for hours and am replete with cocktails, champers and the scrummiest food. Have had the most interesting of conversations and met the most marvellous people. Can't thank you enough - but I'll be back for brunch before you know it!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Well Willow - thank you for the invitation. This is the most fun I've had in decades...

    ReplyDelete
  86. Dearest Firelight, here is your dance. I saw
you in line for your first entrance to the
ball, and you look ravishing. You were
number 60 to my 46th. Ladies choice,
of course. What is your pleasure?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Finally, we are HERE.....and I do mean WE.....seems Coop brought along several of his old flames ....including me....and then there is Clara Bow (one of his very first affairs) Marlene Dietrich... Maureen O'Hara....Patricia Neal....All stuffed into the the Duesenberg....good grief...!!!
And wouldn't you know at the last minute--just before I left home....I had a message from Mister Ed....saying he would be grazing on the lawn at Willow Manor and would I please find him as soon as I arrive for a little gallop across the dance floor...!!!! (Have you seen a very handsome Palomino in black tie prancing across the grounds of the Manor yet?) Then I saw I had a text message from Lovejoy, seems he has managed to sell off all Derrick's fabulous art collection....through a big auction house in Melrose!! While doing an appraisal that Derrick has kept very hush hush...Lovejoy (you know he is a "divvy") discovered several original Picasso's behind some of Derrick's many foreign landscape prints!!! I think I am going to make sure Derrick becomes my new best friend...as he is about to become quite wealthy!!!! How, can I manage??? Lovejoy will be here tonight--said the buyer lived somewhere near Willow Manor and he was looking forward to seeing me!! Willow, could that have been WT at the auction?? Oh dear!!

    ReplyDelete
  88. (a call from the Philippines)

Oh willow, I told you Im gonna be busy by this time and the season here isn't good for travelling so I dropped a call instead to check if all of you guys are having good time there.

Thank you for the generous invitation. I hope I can make it next year. Enjoy pretty lady! My warmest regard to everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  89. you have outdone yourself my dear--Lenny was a magnificent emcee, the food was amazing and you must have through gallons of champagne--good thing tomorrow's friday---can't wait for next year!!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Oh, Glenn just dance with me....though I do love a waltz....and I think I hear the violins playing "The Tale of the Vienna Woods"....that Strauss...pure magic! Whatever you do, don't let Mr. Ed break in...

    ReplyDelete
  91. I really am still quite taken with Patrick Swayze, but I have just become aware of Clive Owen.(I have just reset my netflix que with his movies on top. What movies would you ladies suggest I watch first?) I had no idea who he was - and he does leave quite an impression. What a lovely dance we had. Thank you, Kristen, for switching partners. I hope you and Patrick worked up some sweat.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Can someone tell me where the bathroom is?

    ReplyDelete
  93. i didn't realize that i had come to the ball with lady GaGa...

who the hell is lady GaGa?!

'fraid i'm a lil' ol wallflower from here on out...gotta hold of a bottle of white merlot, but good news--my face doesn't sting anymore from all the slaps i got earlier.

    cheers! hic

    ReplyDelete
  94. Tom....Psssst! Up the stairs and to the left...or was it the right....???
    Hurry back for our dance...

    ReplyDelete
  95. There WAS a fine looking Palomino horse in black tie poking his head in the top half of the stable-style front door earlier. I didn't realize he was looking for you, FireLight! You know, he did say something to me, but I thought it was just that I had had one too many Last Words.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Clive Owen is a busy fellow tonight. How is he managing to juggle so many partners?

    ReplyDelete
  97. Glenn, did I hear you mention Yul? Well, I had a dream once that Mr. Brynner was really my biological father. He does waltz incredibly well, you know. That scene with Deborah Kerr in The King and I is one of film's finest. Could that be Yul over there in the black Stetson?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Tom's date is Lady Gaga? How did I miss that? I suppose he coaxed her with his sweet Dino Hand.

    ReplyDelete
  99. OH, Willow! Then he IS here...you know how I love a horse...I am going to slip throught the kitchen and make sure Marcel is not upsetting Chef Ramsey (I thought I saw where someone was bringing him along)...and then out on the lawn...I need fresh air after that news about Derricks's collection...and maybe Ed & I can just dance by the light of the moon...and save the floors....while he "Whhhhhhiiiiispers sweehheeeeet" nothings to me!

    ReplyDelete
  100. FireLight, I was going to include the big, burly, kilted WT in the Manor Ball festivities, but he choses to remain incognito.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Oh, FireLight, I am so relieve you are here to entertain Mr. Ed! He's been nibbling on my neck and asking to use the phone to call Wilbur.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Well, you know I understand that...the shy types,...but I was just wondering if he might have been the buyer at the auction house in Melrose who scarfed up all of Derrick's art collection???
    What a story!!

    ReplyDelete
  103. Whatever you do, don't let Mr. Ed on the phone....he may call up more of Coop's old girlfriends....and Lord knows he has brought enough of them here tonight!

    ReplyDelete
  104. I was so nervous since this is my first ball. However, my date Gregory (Peck!) has been the perfect escort. What a beautiful event! Willow - as a fellow Buckeye, it has been fun to watch the guests discover how much fun we can create in Ohio!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Has anyone seen Dotty? I seem to have misplaced her

    ReplyDelete
  106. Danine, welcome! I'm thrilled to find another Buckeye in the crowd! xx Mind if I take Mr. Peck for a little gander around the dance floor?

    ReplyDelete
  107. Alan, the last time I saw Dotty, she was in the big red wingback chair in the library, watching Mae West's seance. She looked a little stoney faced, and was holding a rose tightly in her teeth!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Willow : Are you sure you don't mean she looked a little stoned, she's hardly been away from the bar since we arrived.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Willow : Are you sure you don't mean she looked a little stoned, she's hardly been away from the bar since we arrived.

  110. Willow : Are you sure you don't mean she looked a little stoned, she's hardly been away from the bar since we arrived.

    ReplyDelete
  111. My goodness I'm appearing in triplicate : it must be the champagne, it always has that effect on me

    ReplyDelete
  112. Heehee, that's exactly what I meant, only I was trying to state it delicately! ;^)

    ReplyDelete
  113. Oh, dear, Alan, I do believe you have the hiccups! Let me fetch you a nice tall glass of ice water.

    ReplyDelete
  114. From my brief acquaintance with her I can say with some sincerity that "delicately" and "Dotty" are not words that sit well together in the same sentence

    ReplyDelete
  115. I knew Dotty and Mae West would truly hit it off!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Willow : Is your charming sister (Tallulah Bankhead) here this evening?

    ReplyDelete
  117. Please, please, please Willow...can Leonard sing Famous Blue Raincoat before he leaves!
Seamus and I will weep on demand!

    ReplyDelete
  118. I agree with Jacqueline and anyway over here it is getting on for four in the morning and it's cold enough to be the end of December

    ReplyDelete
  119. Alan, sorry, no, I haven't seen her around this evening.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Absolutely! Famous Blue Raincoat is a MUST! Please, Lenny, pretty please?

    ReplyDelete
  121. willow, I am having a wonderful time. Rickman's recital! The food! And at last, I am partying with Lady Gaga. We are setting up the karaoke tent together now...

    ReplyDelete
  122. Oh Donald and I are having the best time! We are enjoying thsi amazing cast of characters that have arrived. I've never danced so much and must confess that these high pink pattened leather pumps are not all that comfortable. I must also confess that that horn honking was us in theh new sporty Mercedes-Benz McClaren...we're not as flexible as we once were so necking in that shoebox gave poor Donald a spasm and then we got so twisted up we laid on that horn accidentaly. All under control now! Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  123. Willow, how do you do it, and still manage to look radiant, without a care? If I'd been slaving for weeks doing all these preparations, I'd be too pooped to party! You make it look effortless, dear.

I'm not sure if you've met my escort this evening, Mr. Bogart.

(in private, after Humprhrey saunters away to greet a long lost friend...)

Isn't he a dream? When he showed up in a white dinner jacket, somehow I just knew it would be a wonderful evening!

I plan to record the goings-on on my blog, so we can savor it all later. I'm sure you'll not sleep tonight... I know Mr. Linky will help us get together eventually!

Thank you for what I know will be an enchanting night!

    ReplyDelete
  124. After that spirited waltz with
Firelight, I felt the need to
get a little breather. So then
    I followed Yul Brynner outside
    onto the veranda, and the
    gaggle of folks around him
    were listening to his anti-
    smoking lecture. As a lifetime
    non-smoker, I felt smug and
moved on, spying Mr. Ed in
    his dapper Equus Tux, and
I followed him to the Manor
    stables, which is quite resplendent
in its own right. There is a trainer's
office there, and it has this lovely
old high back leather love seat
next to Mr. Ed's stall. I sat down
to talk to him about the state of
    the world, and found myself
drifting off for a little nap.
I awakened with a slight headache
and that furry taste in my mouth,
so I hurried back here, and consumed
a liter of champagne and three
    chocolate mousee's, and now
I am ready for Round Two of
the Ball, finding some face time
    with the Evening Crowd.
I just found out that Tony Curtis
died today, during the ball. How
nice of him to rise up and be
Lydia's date for tonight. That just
proves that Miss Willow can raise
the dead, every which way, so
they say. I am a tad sad that
    Derrick took a Scottish powder.
    He is a hoot man!
    Hope he returns soon.

    ReplyDelete
  125. We had a truly wonderful time, but time to say farewell and a million thank yous. Kisses ... Gene and Jane:)

    ReplyDelete
  126. Darling Willow - what an absolutely fabulous night, you've truly outdone yourself this year! Due to circumstances well beyond my control I was unable to join you on the evening, but was there in spirit believe me. Now put up your tootsies & rest, you've earnt it!
    Millie ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  127. Carrie-Anne must have slipped out
while I was talking with Mr. Ed.
Has anyone seen her in the
last hour? She was doing some
face time with Jude Law over
in the Hamlet corner the last
time I laid eyes upon her gorgeous
    counteance.

I did see, speaking of gorgeous,
Sophia Loren strolling in the garden
with Grace Kelly, and Jackie O was
tagging along trying to get a word
in edgewise. Those gals still look
great, but the best looking of the
senior set , as always, is Helen
Mirren, with a passionate red ball
    gown, and her cleavage pushed
up so far I feared she might pop
out a special treat for Alan Bates,
who was one of her escorts; the
    other being Albert Finney. Bates
and Finney got to drinking with
    Tony Hopkins and Michael Caine,
and things got very British and
    loud and rude.

Clint Eastwood, looking 7 feet tall
in his tapered tan tuxedo, was
walking arm in arm with his daughter,
and a young model no one recognizes.

    Demi Moore slapped Ashton Kutcher's
face over something, and he began
to tweet about it, or text some people
    immediately. Bruce Willis was yelling'
something at him too, but I was
too far away to hear particulars.

    Angelina Jolie was smooching with
Clive Owen and one point, and
Brad Pitt was busy baby sitting four
of their teenaged kids that tagged
    along.

Jean Simmons had several too many
Last Words, and has become topless
over at the Hamlet corner. Olivier is
trying to put his coat over her,
and Colin Farrell is still running
    through these rooms buck-assed
naked; it pays to advertise I guess.
I was always in love with Miss Simmons
    during her SPARTACUS, THE BIG
    COUNTRY, GUYS AND DOLLS, And
    ELMER GANTRY salad days.

    ReplyDelete

  128. *panting* Audrey. and. I. just. made. it. to. the. ball......

    ReplyDelete
  129. Well, I have worked up an appetite
again, and will descend on the
entree table. I am a big meat
    eater, even though it makes
    Carrie-Anne uneasy since she
    is a world class Vegan.

    Well, now Daniel Day-Lewis
has joined the cue over at
the Hamlet corner. Did he play
    Hamlet once? He has said
    something funny to Campbell
Scott who is doubling over with
    laughter. Nicol Williamson is
    frowning. Wonder what it was?

    Now Oliver Reed, Sean Connery,
    and Richard Harris have joined
    the Brit Drinking team, and
    Richard Burton is leading them
all in a Welsh love song. Dylan
    Thomas is there too, drinking
    heavily, and whispering things
    to Ernest Hemingway, who looks
    about ready to pass out.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Oh Lord! If one more person requests my 'Born To Be Wild'...

    And where's the powder room?

    ReplyDelete
  131. Okay...one more Last Word, and then Seamus and I must really be on our way. What a fabulous party...you will be the talk of the season...Willow you are a Star!

    ReplyDelete
  132. willow - welcome to the champagne cellar! it's the annual throwing of the i ching and mass consumption of the veuve clicquot magnum featuring reya and our invited guests! come on and hunker in under the giant throw rug i brought with me from my last trip to mongolia. it actually used to be covering for a small yurt but now i take it with me on cooler nights in - well champagne cellars!! steven

  133. Gosh Liz Taylor wearing a diamond
necklace that could bail out the
national debt has caught up with
    Sophia, and Grace, and Jackie,
and at some point Liza Minnelli
    and Cher joined the posse.
    Madonna is now headed their
    way too. Is something brewing?
Lady Ga Ga is wanting to join
them too, but feels out of place.

Joni Mitchell is in the library,
    playing some sultry jazz piano,
and dueling with her on the
    second Manor Steinway, Billy
Joel is in a New York state of
mind, and his pal, Elton John
has joined him at the keyboard.
    Lennie Cohen stopped by,
and they all pointed over at
    Hoagie Carmichael, pleased that
    he attended again this year.

    Will the rapture never end?
    Billy Chrystal and Robin
    Williams have both danced
    with Whoopi at the same
time, and she is loving it.
    Chevy Chase is trying to
    tango with Goldie Hawn,
    but Kurt Russell looks like
    dancing is not his dish
    of tea; scowling a lot.
    Jesus, Fergie is doing another
    Rob Marshall solo dance
    number, and her cleavage
    is bouncing so hard,
    Truman Capote ran out
    of the room.

    Somehow I knew that when
    Bogie arrived, he would be
    wearing that white dinner
    jacket. It was cute, Willow,
    to put the RICK'S AMERICAN
CAFE neon sign up in the
    gentleman's bathroom.
Gary Cooper got a real kick
    out of that.

    Ingrid Bergman, and her daughter,
    Isabella Rosselini, are talking
    intently with James Dean and
Dennis Hopper. Is that Sal Mineo
    with them? Natalie Wood has
spent a lot of time with Jimmy
    tonight, and Bob Wagner is
    really bent out of shape
    over it.

    ReplyDelete
  134. They took a vote over at the
    Hamlet Corner, on who was
    the "best" Hamlet, and that
    turned out to be Olivier,
    with Branagh a close second.
    Nicol Williamson was the most
    bizarre Hamlet, David Tennant
    was the most athletic, and
Mel Gibson, who no one can
find at the moment was the
    most natural and macho.

    Harvery Keitel emerged as the
    best fencer and swordsman
on the dueling field, just as
    Willow predicted. Custer is
    sulking, and Cornel Wilde
    left in disgust. Basil Rathbone
and Errol Flynn have taken to
    drinking Last Words out of
    thermos bottles, and they
could give a rip about the
    results. I was an honorable
    mention, with my cavalry
    cutlass.

    Sly Stallone was the arm
    wrestling champ, but
    Mickey Rourke gave him
a real run for his honor.
Ben Affleck was a dark horse
and turned out to be quite
    the contender. I was beaten
    by Carrie-Anne, and left
with a red face and a sore
    arm.

    Kevin Costner finally bested
    Ed Harris on the western
    quick draw contest, and the
    old timers all cheered.

    Mr. Ed had invited Francis
    the Talking Mule to the
    event, but the mule never
showed up. Hell of a thing.

    Jeff Chandler shared that he
    always wanted to play Hamlet,
    and Rock Hudson mentioned
he had turned down the role
    three times in the 60's.

    Lee Liberace showed up
    at the dueling piano bar,
    and only Elton could keep
    up with him. Joni Mitchell
did a duet with Victor Borge,
    and I loved that.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Okay, Steven, I'm hunkered under the rug and ready for a massive dose of i ching. Sniff-sniff. It does slightly smell of yurt. Homey, though, not gamey in the least! ;^)

  136. Glenn, heehee someone must have been playing a little joke with the Rick's sign. Neon is not really my particular idiom.

  137. Hi Willow...everything looks divine! I hope you don't mind if i am silly with my date tonight...you will understand when you mingle with us...i just felt like letting my hair down and seeing how the other half lives...there may be a pun or two, but no disrespect intended. My life has been a little crazy these days so silly was the only way my mind could go tonight...by the way you look stunning! Did I mention I have had 3 martinis before we left?

    ReplyDelete
  138. Golly gee, am I ever glad I popped in via Fireblossom for this BIG BIG party.

    Thank you for the opportunity!

    xo

    ReplyDelete
  139. After freshening up, I am here to say adieu...can't leave without saying hello and goodbye to Isabella Rosselini and Madonna.

    Dear Willow,
Thank you for hosting such a Ball to remember for a lifetime. It really surpassed my wildest imaginations. It really is a privilege to be here at the WEillow Manor Ball.

Did you get to dance with dear Ralph...

And thank you Glenn for the commentary - it would have been difficult to track all the juicy parts of the evening without you - I hope you managed to catch a dance or two...and a kiss with your lady.

Leonard darling, Joseph dear... say goodbye to Lady Gaga, Carrie Ann Moss and the divine Aishwarya Rai.

    Goodnight everyone!

    Ta! Ta!

    Til the next year!

    ReplyDelete
  140. did anybody else know that Steve Martin was behind the bookcase juggling? He said he ducked in there after Mr. Ed ate his pants.

Has anyone seen my date, you know the scary girl with the flippers?

    ReplyDelete
  141. Goodnight, Nino, thanks so much for coming! You are delightful, my friend!

    ReplyDelete
  142. Well, I must say...Willow I never realized you had such a grand horse stable on the grounds...I would have been up here for riding long before now! While Glenn was napping....after his chat with Mr. Ed ...(and yes he is one marvelous dancer...Thank you kind sir, for my oh so spirited waltz around the ballroom floor) Ed convinced me to change out of my gown and into riding clothes...for a moonlight gallop over the landscape of the manor....it was just pure Ohio- over-the-top exhilarating! Ed and I caught up on old times...he even asked me about my sister Sue....said they had met a few times on the other side...naturally I just loved hearing that bit of news....eventually we could hear all the music wafting over the trees and hills and Ed (he said I could call him just Ed)....trotted back into the stable...saying he was ready for a nap....and would I please take that silly black tie off him....said Wilbur had insisted he dress for the ball!
So I am back in my dress, Coop is still hanging out in the men's room or he is off somewhere with one of his "ladies"...and I am looking for Lovejoy....apparently in all the wrong places. Have you seen him? You know, at one time I thought I heard in the distance swiney voice of one....Miss Piggy? You don't think she would try to crash this year's ball do you. For his sake, I am glad Derrick has slipped of the bed.
Honestly, I think Glenn may be nominated for Pulitzer for his in depth coverage of this year's event!
And, though you are always telling us over and over about how haunted Willow Manor is.....never has it been so true as it is tonight...so many wandering souls have been drawn here...by your beautiful spirit and gracious hospitalty.....amazing...totally amazing!!!

  144. Well, I must say...Willow I never realized you had such a grand horse stable on the grounds...I would have been up here for riding long before now! 146. What a fabulous, fabulous evening. I'm just leaving this thank you note on the hall table. Thank you so much for a perfectly spectacular evening. you are the ever gracious hostess. Everything was perfect darling. The company, the music, the food and of course that wonderful champagne of which I'm having a last glass before I leave. Of course there was one slight hiccup which could have been embarrassing but I think we got over it quite nicely. It was when I bumped into Alan Rickman. You probably don't remember that we came together last year and somehow I ended up leaving with Sean Connery - or did that happen at MMMsss Tea in Aspen? Anyway we danced together and I think the friendship has been salvaged. Or come to think of it, I think he left with someone else!!

You looked stunning as always. drop dead gorgeous puts it mildly.

I have to go and find Gary - the last time I saw him, a beautiful blue eyed blonde was hanging onto his every word. There is only one lady leaving on that jet and that's me!

Hugs, kisses and thanks. (Am still wearing my shoes and so glad I went with the blue).

  147. Uh-oh. A swiney voice wafting over the moors of Willow Manor? Derrick assured me that Miss Piggy was filming on location and was blissfully unaware of the Manor Ball.

Yes, I totally agree that Glenn should be nominated for a Pulitzer for his grand coverage of this evening's events!!

  148. Did Tom leave? I wanted to tell him how much fun it was to "dance" with the Dino hand.

Steven, I love luxuriating on the throw rug down here amongst the magnums, scattering the sticks and reading the aurors with you!! Willow thanks so much for taking the time to come down here.

Tim has an early day at NCIS tomorrow. I'm trying to decide whether I should stick around or not. Last year I remember waking up on the couch in the library the day after. As I recall, Willow, you were serving delicious coffee cake and nice strong coffee to we stragglers who ended up spending the night.

    Hmmm ...

  149. Oh Heavens....Ed does things like that sometimes when he is overtired....and did I say HAUNTED!!?? I have no idea how my last post came in triplicate....please feel free to toss some of those, Willow.
Heading back to the stable to see if I can find Steve's pants. Damn, crazy horse!

  150. Oh Willow, this has been SO wonderful. I've never been to anything this extravagant event in my whole life. The food, the decor, the guests, the dancing, the visiting — it was all so marvellous. I met and conversed with some truly fascinating people. Delightful!

Thank you so much for the invitation!

I did bring some mead along with me, as I promised. I set it down on a table while Sigourney removed her wrap. But then I forgot about it. When I came back later, the bottle was empty. So someone must have enjoyed it. (Did you, by chance, invite any other Bears?)

I learned some dances. Sigourney taught me the Walse. Kristen taught me the Fox Walk. And Amanda taught me the Tangle. All quite amazing. (I didn't break anyone's foot! In fact, Kristen danced on top of mine, which worked out well.)

I'm sorry about my encounter with the one chap who had too much of what you call whisky. He was being loud and obnoxious. I think his name was Westwood, or something. Apparently he's quite famous. I was prepared to let things slide, until he started to seriously aggravate Amanda. Then I gave him a gentle cuff on the side of the head. Really, it was just a gentle tap; another Bear wouldn't have noticed it at all. However, Mr. Westwood went "flying" (as I think humans describe it), and ended up in a pile of pillows in a corner. After several other guests helped him to his feet, I took my stance and prepared to say, "Marquess of Queensberry Rules." Except, in his condition, I doubt he would have understood me. So, I thought «Il n'y a pas de quois,» and suggested to Sigourney that we get some air, as I was beginning to feel claustrophobic. She readily agreed. The crowd gave us a "wide berth" as you call it. Except for a couple of women who, I think, were trying to "calm the savage beast." At least that's how Sigourney described it. (What's this "animal magnetism" to which people refer?) Anyhow, Sigourney moved them aside promptly, as if they were simple Aliens, or something. Again, I am very sorry about that.

So, encore, thank you so much for the invitation. I hope we'll have a chance to do it again.

  152. *whispering* Willow, it's been a lovely evening, but I'm running off... I'm making such a tart of myself, leaving with Pierce when I came with Bogie! I'll fill you in when we meet with Mr. Linky. Thank you for an exhilirating evening!

    ReplyDelete
  153. Mr. Bear, I'm glad you had a wonderful time! Are you telling me you clawed Clint Eastwood? Maybe we should have Yuri Zhivago take a look at him?

Loved watching you learn to "tangle"!!

  154. What a wonderful ball Willow!!! I snuck in when no one was paying attention and hid in a closet under the stairs. There I met up with Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and Harry Potter! Harry loaned me his invisibility cloak and I came into the ball room to watch you dance in your 1949 gown, Willow. The pleats in the skirt made all of your twirls breathtakingly graceful. How lovely and glowing you looked waltzing around the room! Everyone seems to be having a glorious time!
I am not going to stay long.... but many thanks for your hospitality! Next year I hope to stay longer and enjoy the day! Love to all!!! xoxo

  159. Well, I am standing by the fireplace...champagne glass bubbling over...just enjoying the very special ambiance that is the divine Willow Manor Ball...I raise my glass to our dear, dear Willow...to the Lady of the Manor!
{{{drinking down every drop & sending the crystal into the fire)))

I am off to find Lovejoy...I'll bet he is waiting for me down the drive....in that adorable little blue Morris Minor....He is probably wating to go shopping for antiques right here in Ohio!

    Huuuuh!!!!!
Duesenberg Schmuesenberg....what do I need Coop for anyway.....just another pretty face! Though we did get in at least two dancers, I must say he is pretty smooth out on the dance floor!

    ReplyDelete
  160. No, NO, Willow: I merely stroked him with the back of my paw. Clawing him would have been much too "insensitive" on my part. I could have done serious damage had I been less careful!

Again, my apologies for my rudeness. I beg your pardon.

    Thanks, again, for the invitation.

  161. My goodness, the party is finally
slowing down some. It is 7:23 pm
in the Northwest, so although I
seemed to have lost my Rolex
in the wine cellar, I take it to
be about 10:30 pm here in
    Ohio? A man once said,
"It ain't a party until the
    poopers go home!"
I, of course, who has partied
    for about ten hours now
    would never utter such words.

I got to give Ninotazz a hug on
the way out the door, and she
is more than welcome for my
    enthusiasm and Ball coverage;
    although Truman Capote told
me that I sucked at ball coverage,
and I am still trying to figure
out what the hell he meant?

    Firelight, I would have to
    nominate you for the
    "Belle of the Ball" award,
    for your wonderful companionship,
    sense of humor, three wonderful
lip locks, and that low cut bodice
you wore. I lost contact with
    Carrie-Anne after 6 hours, but
    she probably went home with
Jude Law. I saw his limo slinking
out a few minutes ago. By the
way, not to embarrass you but
    Ashton Kushner took pics of
you, and a video with his iphone
while you slipped out of your
ball gown to take your moonlit
ride on Mr. Ed. He already posted
it on You Tube. and Facebook,
and it got 12,000 hits in less
    than 30 minutes!

I am so humbled by my nomination
for a Pulitzer for my running
commentary. If Roger Ebert can get
one, why not old Glenn, right?

Demi Moore left with Bruce Willis
and Ashton has had way too much
champagne. He has not noticed her
absence yet. When he laughs, he
brays like a mule, and then giggles
like a little girl by the way.

Jeff Bridges showed up for a few
    minutes, sporting his long
    TRUE GRIT the remake beard.
I hadn't realized he has become
hard of hearing; love his work.

    Only Alan Rickman talking to
    Richard Burton over at the
    Hamlet corner; everybody else
has moved off into the throngs.

How does Leonard Cohen do it?
He has not slowed down one
iota for 10 hours that I'm aware
of; what a terrific M/C he is.
    Willow certainly had excellent
    taste in that department.

    Rob Marshall promised
    Leonard Bernstein, in front
of Bob Fosse that next year,
    he will bring along Nathan
    Lane, and Topol to sing
    some tunes from FIDDLER,
    Robert Goulet to warble
    from CAMELOT, Julie Andrews
    to sing songs from SOUND
    OF MUSIC, Rita Morano doing
    numbers from WEST SIDE
    STORY, Howard Keel doing
    some from KISS ME KATE,
    and yes, Frank Sinatra doing
Luck Be A Lady from GUYS
AND DOLLS, and for a capper
    Mel Brooks singing SPRINGTIME
    FOR HITLER.

  162. Gosh, I fell asleep down in the cellar under that yurt cover. I ching does that to me. Did I miss anything exciting? It's 11:00 here in the east and this little willow is ready to call it a day. Feel free to party till you drop. Norma Desmond's "Max" is tending bar all night. Tom Stephenson is sleeping on one of the sofas. Edith, Marilyn Monroe and Edna St. Vincent Millay have the guest rooms. So, if there's an open sofa, you're welcome to it. Breakfast is set for 7:00 a.m. EST. See you then! It was magical, my sweets! xx

Those two....wait til I get my hands....on...oh my....
all those offers I am going to get now that I will be famous...for those dimples....on my.....did you say 12,ooo hits? Oh my Gawd, don't let the Colonel find out! He is likely to find his pistol and.....Oh Lord!!

    Sweet dreams.

  165. Ok, alright, the party is nearly
at a stand still, so it is Adios,
    gutten abend, Sayanora, and
    kissey-kissey to you Miss
Willow. ONE HELL OF A PARTY.
I have to slide out too.
    Hope Carrie Anne got home
    without incident. Did anyone
    ever find Steve Martin's pants?
Did Colin Farrell ever put some
    clothes on? Will Firelight become
a new You Tube sensation in
    her undies?
    I will be back in the morning;
    probably sleep in some.
    Save some of that strong
    Ohio coffee for me, babe.
    I have never attended such
a gala affair, nor have I ever
    enjoyed myself more.
    Thank you sweet Willow,
for the night of my half century,
and for the bestest damn Ball
    that ever madcapped its way
    into history and posterity!!!
    Good night to all you
    princes and ladies in waiting,
    and good night Mrs. Kincaid
    wherever you are.

  166. We are also breathless and more than a bit tardy. My date was a cad, so I brought my very magical and elegant hound, The Lady Stella. We love strolling through your beautiful gardens in the moonlight.

I don't know how this martini appeared in my hand, but it is divine. And your dress! Simply stunning!

I'm about to share a dance with Rupert Everett; I am indeed lucky....

The Lady Stella and I thank you for your gracious hospitality.

  167. Good night, all, and sweet dreams, dear Willow. Thank you for a truly memorable evening.

I'll just shrug on my coat and tiptoe barefoot out through the garden, as someone has eaten my magical chocolate shoes. (Was it Bror Blixen? Or Denys Finch Hatton? I'll never tell.)

  168. Leonard said he had other plans when I invited him to attend the WMB. When I walked in, alone as usual, and saw him with his bevy of beauties I suffered a faint, cracked my head on the first stair and was immediately removed by the EMT's to your guesthouse where I was bandaged and placed in a checkered eyesore for home delivery. I shan't be back tonight. What was Leonard thinking? I so miss him. (Please don't tell him.) He gets feisty when I fuss.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Good grief! Had I known Jezebel was bringing The Lady Stella, I would have brought Her Ladyship, Miss Sadie.

On second thought, better that I didn't. We wouldn't want the word to get out that Ms. Willow's party had gone to the dogs.

  170. finally! back to make a journal entry here. What a fantastic night. I couldn't believe it when the Scottish corner had the kilts and all and then my date, Susan boyles, rips off the bottom part of her dress and lo and behold she cross dressed--yeap, wore a kilt too under all that! Off she went doing the fling or something . LOL. Well, anyway, we ahd a marvellous time --thank you so much Willow, adn yes, I noticed your twirl when we danced. you are so good at that. :)

so, is your manor rather like Dr.Who';s Tardis00it wraps up space so it is far bigger inside than it initially appears. I seriously don;t know how you packed so many of us in. I did note you skimped a bit on security but then again, EVERYONE was famous it seemed. LOL.

Well, I must get some sleep. I'll be off then but will try to pop by later for your brunch or what have you. how nice. If you happen to see Susan, tell her she left the keys to her Lear jet at my place down the road. Oh dear me. :)

I'll try to jot down the rest of my black book notes at
More Hot Toast and Jam tomorrow!

Great to see Betsy, Cathy and dear Bach too!

  171. Dude, I don't get home until midnight, so I'm thrilled that I didn't miss a thing...

BTW - Jimmy Stewart is my date. Anyone trying to interfere during the slow dances will be summarily separated from their cocktail and their collar.

Yes, that's a stiletto lodged in my garter...

  175. Oh, no! I can't believe it! Hugh Jackman, my escort, has been knocking on my door for HOURS! It seems some trollop cast a sleeping spell upon me and, well, blush, I was just awakened by the kiss of a prince. Hugh has been sitting by me, holding my hand, and dabbing away my tears. I simply cannot believe I have missed the most important event of the year. But, all is not lost. I will carefully store my frock for next year's event, and while my darling Hugh will not be able to join me, I've dropped a line to Richie Havens in hopes he'll be my date. Would you mind, Willow, if he brought his guitar?

  176. willow: sorry, Gaga and I just had to have a clothes-swap in the powder room (we found it) so abandoned our karaoke post!
Not before, however, I did "Time of My Life" with Joe Cocker - even Jennifer Warnes complimented us!. I left her and Bill in each other's arms, by the way.

Mr Granger and I are taking our leave of you now, and would like to thank you so much for such a wonderful night. I am afraid I have left 19 gold filter-tips in the flower bed at the end of the drive. I couldn't find a bin outside anywhere - you hid them, you perfectionist, didn't you?
I have one smoke for the drive home, and Mr Granger is returning to that Eternal Ball that is greater even than yours.
    Until next year.

I did not link to my blog because I simply could not manage to create a post in your honor. 182. Dearest Willow...
You've truly outdone yourself this year. What a wonderful marvelous gala affair. From the selections of foods to the walks through the gazebo to the stables.. its just been such a lovely evening. Thanks again for inviting LadyCat and I. It was so good to see old friends such as Alan Burnett and Mr. Toast. And of course mingling with all the celebs...The dancing was fantastic and the crashing of the toasting glasses in the fireplace was smashing. We must be going now, our chartered plane leaves for England in this morning.
Please do consider coming with us. We have room and we can all stop over and see Alan Burnett on the way to Sorbie Castle. Please come; you've been so busy in prep for the ball and you need a comfy rest. See you soon daaaahling!
