golly moses

I was very pleasantly surprised to get this wonderful movie still in the mail this week from my bloggy friend, Steviewren, from A Little Birdie Told Me So. She knows how much I adore The World of Henry Orient, 1964, set in glorious autumnal 1960s Manhattan. Since fall is just around the corner, it's about time to pop it in for another watch. (Click HERE for my previous film review.) The movie stars Peter Sellers, as a seedy, mediocre concert pianist and two13 year old girls who are infatuated with him. I like this delightful coming of age film so much, because the fresh exuberance of the girls reminds me of my own idealistic girlishness in the '60s.

It's fun to own this great little piece of Hollywood memorabilia. A film still, sometimes called a publicity still or a production still, is a photograph taken on the set of a movie or television program during production by a movie stills photographer, primarily used for promotional purposes. I think Stevie was drawn to this particular photo because it could easily be she and I in 1964. Kinda looks like us, doesn't it, Stevie on the left, and me on the right? Note, true to form, I'm the one holding the turkey leg.

Marian Gilbert: You shaved your legs!
Valerie Boyd: You're the biggest blabber mouth.
Marian Gilbert: You didn't tell me!
Valerie Boyd: I don't have to tell you everything!
Erica Booth: A little louder girls, some people in the balcony can't hear you.

  1. What a bit of fun! I remember sitting in our family room on a Saturday morning watching this movie while eating dry cereal out of the box (no turkey legs). I was alone and it was raining. I have never thought of that moment before but it came flooding right back like it was yesterday. Thanks Willow!

  3. I'm so glad you like it Willow. I found it in a big bin of similar photo stills in a little store downtown. The minute I saw it, I knew I had to get it for you.

And you know...those two girls could be us.

  6. You know, I don't believe I've ever seen this one. Sellers is another favourite of mine but, he was a complex character, wasn't he? So very versatile, though.

  8. Dear Willow: Hey! I love this! The little girls running and jumping almost flying, jumping over that poor baby on his trike really describes the magic of childhood. And in NY NY! And Peter Sellars my all time favorite comedienne. I have to got to find and rent this movie then maybe own it. I was so in love with Peter Sellers Pink Panther series. Definitely a treat and love this bonus tape thanks Steviewren plus so nostalgic for me! Reminds me of my sisters and me! Thanks for the memories!

  17. This is one that I have never seen. Thanks for the heads up, Willow!

My favorite Peter Sellers movie was "Being There."

  18. Willow, I think you and Stevie should start training immediately, and then find those streets and recreate these hurdling scenes this fall! Of course you'd have to also include the turkey leg :) What fun, yet another great recommendation.

  21. A few years ago, I went through a real heavy Peter Sellers phase. I bought and watched -- for the first time, in some cases -- all of the "Pink Panther" stuff, Dr. Strangelove, Lolita, Waltz of the Toreadors, Being There, There's a Girl in My Soup, Casino Royale, The Bobo, After the Fox (of course!) and a lot of his early stuff (much of it relatively unknown in the USA)... but I've never seen this one! I'll make a point to check it out sometime. Thanks for the tip!

  22. I don't think I saw this film. I'll have to add it to the Netflix list ( I think it's up to 400 now ), along with all my Bollywood films, etc. I really enjoyed seeing "Innocents" but this weekend, it was a 3 film Bollywood extravaganza for me. Ohhhh, those Indian men are so gorgeous!!!

  23. I'm just wondering how many takes they needed to get the knicker shots. I wouldn't mind betting it was a helluva lot!!!

    Cynical ain't I! Cro.

  28. How funny--I'd be the one holding the turkey leg, too, I'm sure, Willow. This is great! What a fabulous photo.

  30. Cro, well, if you're cynical, then so am I! I wondered the same thing. Actually, it looks to me like they were wearing dark panties, as we call them over here, so they wouldn't be quite so eye-catching!

  31. Mr. Fox, if you're a big Sellers fan, this one is a must see for you. He is in rare hilarious form in this sweet little film. Angela Lansbury is fabulous in a Manchurian-Candidate-kind-of-mother mode.

  39. Never seen it but just added it to my Netflix! I love Peter Sellers. Just re-watched Dr. Strangelove recently and loved him in Kubrick's bizarre adaptation of Lolita. Thanks for the recommendation!
