high as an elephant's eye

Blue Door Antiques, Sunbury, OH. (Closed. Darn.)
I know. All of you are probably thinking I've fallen off the face of the earth. Forgive me, for it's been over a week since I've been round the bloggyhood . My daughter was home to Willow Manor for a rare week-long visit, so I've shopped till I dropped, staying up to the wee hours listening to all the latest gossip, eating like a complete pig, and participating in wicked killer Scrabble championships. I guess you could say I was making rather merry.

However, like the dutiful blogger, I did take a few photos to share. We visited our favorite sellers of all things vintage this week, including the largest antiques dealer in the Midwest, the massive Heart of Ohio Antique Center, as well as shops in the villages of Powell, Sunbury, and Delaware, Ohio.

The corn in my neck of the woods is super lush this year from all the hot sun and rain; definitely high as an elephant's eye. The skies in Central Ohio were kind enough to give us a glorious display of what I like to call "N.C. Wyeth skies", or in keeping with the "high as an elephant's eye" corn, it was a glorious "oh, what a beautiful morning" Oklahoma kind of sky.

In addition to the ubiquitous corn fields, on our antiquing excursion, we passed wonderful old red barns, court houses in town squares, quaint gas station buildings now used for car repair, and an empty grain elevator, still in use, not for grain, but as a cell phone transmission tower, and last but not least, lots of proudly displayed American flags.

Clockwise: courthouse, Sunbury, OH; empty grain elevator outside Delaware, OH;
car repair shop in Delaware, OH; and a residence in Sunbury, OH.
E crossing the street in Delaware, OH, to Sandusky Street Antiques
So, did I find any goodies? I always find goodies. I like to keep my eye out for interesting pottery, mostly American, of course, although I do collect some West German, and actually found a nice piece of Waechtersbach in Powell, this week. (below, center) A quirky little Pigeon Forge, TN piece (left) found in Sunbury, and a mod aqua McCoy piece (right) waiting for me in Delaware....Ohio, that is. My daughter, E, has an excellent eye and loves to find all kinds of stylish, inexpensive stuff to take back to New York.

my loot from this week

It will take me a while to come down from my "elephant eye" high, but I'll be slowly making my way around to your particular street in the bloggyhood this week. First, I must write a little something about tomatoes for this week's Magpie Tales creative writing prompt. Click HERE to join in the fun! See you soon, my friends. xx

  1. Well I'm glad to know that you were having FUN while we languished here in blogland. LOL.

I was kicking myself for not taking a picture of that same Ohio sky on Saturday - but I think we got enough pictures of Clifton Gorge to do us for the day.

Welcome back - although I'm sure it's bittersweet since it probably means that E has gone home...

  2. Clifton Gorge is beautiful. Did you eat at the mill? It's been ages since I've been there. I love how it's all lit up on the holidays!

  3. love these photos.
and that you had time with your daughter.
I am not ever going to take for granted that my children don't seem to mind spending time with me as they get older . You must be close. Beautiful and blessed.

  5. What glorious fun! Seriously, perfect days as far as I'm concerned. It's interesting you mention Pigeon Forge. I just bought a little Pigeon Forge pitcher for my daughter's new place and I hadn't heard of it before. Next day I went back to the same estate sale and found a necklace by them which is in my shop. Also, I've never heard the phrase "high as an elephant's eye" but I like it and I will be using it for sure. Glad to have you back.

  6. Looks like you hit the mother lode. Are any of those scheduled for Antiques Roadshow. Wouldn't that be wonderful...and I see some of these garage and yard sale buys on PAWN STARS that bring thousands of dollars.

  7. Oh, I've so been longing for a road trip! Thanks for taking me along on yours.

  8. Ohio is so idyllic this time of year; so sophoric in Sunny Sunbury, Ohio! Reminds me of all the little burgs around here; like Pleasantville! Love antiquing! I am always on the look-out for those really cool ceramic crocks and handmade quilts. Oh how I love those and homemade oatmeal cookies! And you are so lucky! Amish and Mennonite country! And Corn Fields! Country Fairs! I'd collect more, and at times, I do, from the ReUse store (Great stuff there). You see, I moved from a Victorian to a Post Modern. Need to "Declutter" cause clutter and minimalism doesnt work at all well! My house is basically an all glass house (I know dont throw stones and wear CLOTHES - is Abe is listenin'?) My style(?) now is hodgepodgelodge-ish. Yes, I love the old fashioned and also the Modern so I try to B-L-E-N-D; really i do, but without much luck or any successful results! I've got to find a style like Willow's! Help!

  18. We all need a break from bloggyland sometimes. We're still here, waiting to see what you've been up to. I miss all the corn fields of the Midwest. Funny how when you live there it becomes something you keep your eye on for all sorts of reasons. Glad you had such a great visit with your daughter. I miss both of mine. It has been almost two months.

  19. I think it's a good idea to take a little break from blogging now and then, even though we all missed you so. How nice to have a week with your daughter. Who was the Scrabble champ?

  20. Ah-hem, well, actually, I ended up being the Scrabble champ, but the competition was fierce!

Those are some great finds, too!!

PS: Don't fret, many of us are behind on blog reading/commenting due to the dazzling summer sun, vacations & vistors, including me!

  24. Sounds like my kind of day. How nice that you and your daughter have had a week together. I'm hoping all of mine will want to come home and spend time with me after they've left the nest. :-)

Before moving to Heidelberg we lived only 10 minutes from the Waechtersbach keramics factory!! Yours is a great find! Looks like a nice piece!

  25. And there I was, thinking you were stuck in the 4th of July weekend! Not in a bad way, of course. Your actual whereabouts were not that bad either, I see! Love your loot and all those pictures of Americana.

  36. It sounds like you had a glorious week. What fun things you did. I think I'm headed to Sacramento tomorrow to see my son, Alex, since I haven't seen him since his wedding two months ago. His wife, Laura, will be on a camping trip but I'll enjoy a little time with him and my two granddogs.

  39. The clouds have been extremely photogenic for a couple of weeks up here too. Saturday especially.

I like your pottery. I have a collection too, and nowhere to put another piece. Maybe.

Yes, I wondered if all was well. It's good that antiques, Wyeth skies and Scrabbolé, as we call it around here, were what kept you.

  44. Love the idea of the abandoned grain elevator being 'repurposed' into a cell tower. Very clever.
Glad you had such a wonderful week with your daughter.

  46. My wife is from Lancaster, Ohio and her parents live on Apple Valley Lake just outside Mt Vernon Ohio. We get back once a year to visit, so Sunbury and Delaware are familiar places. It was fun looking at the pics... ;)

Incidentally, I thought of you this past weekend, as I spent my time, with my daughter, at Grandfather Mtn., in NC for the largest gathering of Scottish clans in the Eastern US! Perhaps you've been?

  55. Amy, no, I've not been, but I have been to several of the Scottish festivals here in the Midwest.

Donna, what a small world! Sunbury doesn't have nearly as many antique shops as it once did. :(
