fridge worthy

No new poetry today. Nothing overheard at the manor. That old
devil moon put me in the cleaning of odd places, and rearranging
mood this week, so I don't have a clever blog preloaded and ready
to post. When this particular mood happens to strike, I have to take
full advantage, because I'm pretty laid back, when it comes to
housekeeping. I'm not a slob, but let's just say the manor is not
always sparkling clean. I like to do more interesting things like read,
experiment in the kitchen, write poetry, and of course, blog.

It's about this time of year, before the holiday season hits me like a
Mack truck, I start thinking about things, like the top of the manor
refrigerator. The fridge and I are exactly the same height, so I don't
ever see the top, or even think about it, for that matter, until
November rolls around.

Every year I mentally analyze the holiday guest list to check for tall
people. You know, tall enough to see the top of the fridge in their
stocking feet. My daughter went through a phase, in her college
years, of dating only giants over 6' 5". These big guys, because of
their height, qualified as "fridge worthy", and the top stayed
amazingly clean.

Well, I can't think of any super tall holiday guests this year, (except
my youngest son, and he doesn't count) but I climbed up on a chair,
anyway, and gave the top of the fridge a good going over with me
mops and me brushes, just because. You know what I'm talking
about; that icky combination of cooking grease and dust, that turns
into tiny wet mice, when you go over it with a damp cloth. Well,
the mice are disposed of, even if no one is "fridge worthy" this year.

  1. Now, cleaning the top of the fridge is no reason to not do poetry! LOL!!!

  2. Hey, I thought it was a pretty decent excuse. I'm a multitasker, but I'm not that good!

  3. I am incredibly impressed. And shamed into action. With a dinner party on tap for tomorrow... I am adding this to my list!!

  4. My mother always kept the top of the fridge occupied with various bric-a-brac...because of a pumpkin pie that went awol on her very first Thanksgiving as a newlywed. She put the pie on top of the fridge for storage and when it was time for dessert it could not be found! The following April while cleaning for her first Easter dinner..it was located...it had fallen behind the fridge. So now nothing gets stored up there :)

    Peace ~ Rene

  5. That's a cute story, Rene. I've heard of dryers eating socks, but never fridges eating pumpkin pies!

  6. Lol. I never really thought about that much before! All my male cousins are "fridge worthy", but I don't think I know anyone in Edmonton who is! I guess I can leave the top of my fridge messy for a while ;)

  7. I'd love to follow your good example but getting up on chairs and/or scrubbing is not recommended for my health.
Loved your castle post, it is always nice to have a castle in one's background somewhere. The landscape shot looks as though it could easily be in Australia.

  8. Looks nice and shinin' from this New England vantage point ...

  9. Oh dear, Willow, if Maureen and I came to visit you, you would have to clean the tops of the doors, tops of lamp-shades and everything!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Raph, you and your family would most definitely be considered "fridge worthy"!

  11. Well I am a shorty so I won't see anything. I wouldn't look anyway. I am not concerned about anyone's housekeeping, that's for sure.

  14. Yep - Spring time is time to go out the door. Fall is for cleaning because we are going to be indoors. The first thing I did however, was put up little white lights across the bookcases. I don't like the darkness in the evenings...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ha! I do the same with dusting the stairs and bookshelves -- depending on time available and heights of gusts expected.

Does that make me a bad person?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Vicki, I hope not! But if it does, you're in good company!

  17. T was in that kinda mood today. as i was leaving for work most of the contents of several closets were in the middle of the floor...i just get out of the way.

    dust and grease
    they turn to mice
    but i wiped em up
    really nice.

theres you a poem willow. smiles.

  18. Brian, you are too cute. I LOVE that. You knew I would!

  19. I don't do a good job of cleaning, but I've learned that people THINK your house is sparkling if it's straightened. So before the guests come I put all the clutter in a laundry basket and hide it in my closet!

  20. Oh the dread of Domestic Engineering! Good job on that fridge, Willow! Love the litmus test of fridge worthiness you wrote about.

  21. Reading your first few sentences I thought, ah, she's describing me. You are so prolific, I don't know how you do it and the rest of your life too. Maybe if I didn't try to keep four blogs going (not to mention that I've begun writing for the Houston Zoo's website...). Applause for the fridge top! I know the "mice" you speak of!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I've always been aware of it, ever since a tall, young fella put his hand up to lean, one leg over the other, took it off rather quickly and dusted his hands together. Ooh, cringe. The top of the fridge might get done twice a year since.

  23. When it comes right down to it...I think your guests will remember your wonderful cooking talents (i.e. your delicious recipes), your talents for entertaining with flare (i.e. your virtual gala), and the amazing stories of the manor (i.e. Life @Willow Manor), than they will notice the top of your fridge!((giggles)) But if you must...the top looks great from the photo as far as I can see! Cleaning is a great way to start out the Samhain. Enjoy your blog. Thank you for keeping it real.

  25. Dear Willow, You would feel the best housekeeper on earth if you saw the top of my fridge at the moment. The renovations have left a massive amount of filth up there. I am in despair cleaning here! I have not been able to write for several weeks packing and cleaning and moving and I am tearing my hair out! I am one bald Tale Peddler. Sigh. I am sure I could lick the top of your fridge in comparison to mine. I don't mean to sound competitive but my place is dirtier by far! xx

    ReplyDelete
  26. God, I so hear you on this one--I never remember the places I can't see for cleaning. Reminds me of the blades on the ceiling fans: I love them in all these rooms, but I don't love cleaning them. When I finally remember to do them, about every six months or so, the dust comes down in a cloud.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Willow, now you'll have to add Domestic Goddess to your banner! I try with these things, but I sorta fail. MOTH always compares me to the first Mrs. MOTH who was apparently very adept with a broom, mop, bucket & duster. Well good for her I say!!!

  28. Since I'm short I have to remind myself to clean the tops of things...maybe tomorrow:)

  29. I'm waiting for the cleaning mood to strike here!!! One could only hope for a fridge that is the color of dust...

    ReplyDelete
  30. The top of my fridge and the top of my mantle are both dust catchers that I can't see and therefore ignore.

  31. Looks pretty shiny. Good for a while.

  32. Waxing poetically about cleaning the top of the refrigerator, now that is Domestic Art (beats reading Martha Stewart Living)! ;-)

What I love best about my kitchen here in V. is that the fridge is built in. So smart.

  37. That
    Old
    Devil
    Moon fellow
    Wore a frown last night,
All wrapped up in his shawl of clouds.
Oblivious of his discontent, I skipped back home fast.

  38. Spaced, the moon was just gorgeous on the horizen last night...huge and golden.

  39. Steph, he looks a bit like Papa Haydn, but it's George Washington. They're all magnets of portraits from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When the kids were young, the fridge was covered in artwork and school schedules. Now it looks sleek and clean, but a bit lonely!

  40. My wife is shrinking. She started out with me being 5'2" and is now down to something like 4'8" which means she can't see much of anything higher than the countertop. Her grandkids are now telling her about the baldspot on the back of her head and that disturbs her sometimes. She says she is shrinking. She can't reach the tops of anything so somebody has to do it for her. The top of the refrigerator is flat so it has become a storage area. A bamboo back scratcher is there. If your back has an itch you can't reach then you head to the refrigerator and on top pick up the back scratcher. It has the cat's "treats" and it has two fly swatters from the summer -- no telling how many fly intestines are still on the screen wire. There is a mouse or two -- the kind the cat jumps at to play. All in all the top is pretty clean but not so the end table filled with books. If you pick up a book there are dust buddies under it. Patty can bend over and reach down there without any problem and she can see down but the mystery of how they get there remains.

  41. I just keep a towel on top of my fridge and then when I need to clean the top, which is about once a year, I just take that towel off and put on a new one. No scrubbing needed except on the top of the doors. And since I am not able to do much cleaning right now, then I guess hubby would have to do it. But all the parties this holiday season will be at someone elses house, so there is not much to worry about. I better just keep recovering. At least typing is getting less painful.

    God bless.

  42. I've just been (reluctantly) cleaning all those kind of odd places this morning because the cottage needed it and the gdds are coming to stay at the weekend. I am not in the mood and would rather be doing what you like doing - reading, writing poetry or blogging.
Sorry I have not visited for ages, I haven't had time for reading blogs lately but hopefully things have calmed down a bit now.

  43. You have a black fridge? Thats so cool! Our whole fridge fits in an alcove in the kitchen, and I couldn't see the top even if I stood on a chair, 'cos it's one of those tall commercial fridges.
I love how you wrote "..me mops and me brushes.." It's language I'm familiar with.

  44. I have an easy rule to obey about cleaning, I ask myself, "is this a health hazard?" If the answer is yes then I clean it !

  45. I love the idea of having fridge worthy house guests! Well done, good for you.

Enjoyed the post about your ancestral castle too!

  46. Wait til I tell Vlad he's "fridge worthy". He'll be so excited... or more likely he'll think I'm being weird again.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm envious that you have a fridge top. Ours is under the cupboards and I miss it. I also miss the fact that all but a a few inches of the sides are available for magnets etc... I have one of those magnet poetry sets but not enought space to use it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hilary, I have one of those magnetic poetry sets. I should dig it back and and use it again. Sounds like fun.

    ReplyDelete
  49. CatLady, Vlad is tall? Hmm, I always pictured him kinda on the shorter side, like Gary Oldman

    ReplyDelete
  50. Willow, you are my kind of girl! I completely agree that there are so many more interesting things to do than keep a perfect house. And luckily, my fridge has a cabinet that completely covers it. It's darn difficult to clean. So I don't, very often. That's my excuse and I'm sticking o it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. When we bought the country place I determined to be a better housekeeper. Which reminds me, maybe it's time to check the top of my refrigerator.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The top of our fridge is hidden within a built-in unit. The top of the unit is so high that if anyone could see the top of it they would be seriously lanky. And who cares what seriously lanky people think.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Dr. M is in charge of the top of our fridge - since he's the one who can see it LOL. I'm a shrimp, so I don't really care. We do keep onions & garlic in a bowl up there & I worry about them since I can't see them - are they sprouting? But I've given Dr. M the responsibility so I leave their care to him!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Oh dear. My nephews are both 6'4". I better get to it!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I salute you! I'm with you 100% on balancing cleaning with more interesting pursuits - cooking, reading, writing - oh yeah!

And I know that for me, cleaning my environment also cleans my mind. Bravo!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ah .. I am slightly taller and can see the top of our fridge. I try not to look ... now of course your post is making me think I need to clean it .. sigh ...

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hello Willow,

If you hadn't mentioned it, I'm sure no-one would have noticed! I was cheered to learn you hadn't got a post pre-loaded, then dashed that you could pull off such an entertaining piece about - Cleaning?!

There must be a poem in there somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  58. You've just reminded me of something I have to do...............

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm with you, the fridge is one of those things whose top gets cleaned once in a while. I had meant to garden today but got sucked into a French film.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Good for you! Because of my fibromyalgia and its severe limiting of my energy, I had to make 'daily cleaning to-do lists'. I do one small thing each day - bathrooms on one day each week, dusting twice a week, etc., otherwise nothing gets done, lol.
    I hate those fridge mice!
Have a great (clean topped fridge) weekend :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Tiny wet mice--ooh, don't think I've ever thought of it that way before and am not sure I will choose to later as I can only imagine how nasty they'd be up on my fridge. :)

Now, I'll tell you what is also fridge worthy (darling expression, btw) --your fridge it self. It's so clean on the front in terms of decor. Those magnets are arranged like a work of Mondrian or something. I love it. not too fussy. Reminds me of my fridge panel--uncluttered.

BTw, for some reason, i jsut knew you'd have a black fridge as well. Perfect--sort of fits in with the shimmering light outside like on that skylight and those views of all the trees. Very inviting indeed.

And finally, you see, you can tell you're a writer because you can take the most mundane and make it quite delicious in its ruminating.

Here's to a lovely weekend, Willow.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I got lucky with this house...fridge fits just under cabinets! I have the stove fan to contend with...more of a weekly cleaning! My closets are screaming a seasonal makeover. I like your black fridge...how is it for fingerprints?

    ReplyDelete
  63. I am NEVER in a cleaning mood. Now that we're moving, I'm going to have to jettison alot of stuff. That's usually a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Cleaning something that nobody can see, willow, makes one feel so virtuous doesn't it. I cleaned the mantelshelf over the Aga today for the same reason. Now I keep looking at it and gloating!

    ReplyDelete
  65. that reminds me, I need to dust the top of my fridge...but I'd rather blog. LOL!

    much love

  66. The late great Quentin Crisp, the stately homo of England, gave an interview in his cramped and exceedingly uncared for flat in London about 20 years or more back.

When asked about the dust, and other less than clean areas of the room, he merely replied that 'after a couple of years you don't really notice the dust.'

He came to live in New York in his last decade or so and was extremely happy there. Still lived in a dodgy area but got on well with all his 'odd' neighbours. John Hurt, one of my favourite actors, took the lead in "The Naked Civil Servant" - Quentin Crisp's autobiography and it was a great hit in the UK. John Hurt has now finished another film about Q.Crisp, covering his final years in America. I will HAVE to buy the video!

    ReplyDelete
  67. "...after a couple of years you don't really notice the dust."

Philip, I love that. I think it's going to be my new mantra.

    ReplyDelete
  68. LOL!! I got such a good laugh over your comment about laid back cleaning. I hear you, sister! Me, too and especially lately.

    ReplyDelete
  69. This made me laugh, Willow. There are all sorts of top-of-fridge jobs that need to be done at my house, too.

    ReplyDelete
  70. If only I lived with a family of small people...unfortunately, they are all so tall. Thus my spotless clean refrigerator top. Want to trade houses?
