Christie's Auction House tomorrow to bid on a fabulous vintage gown.
The latest scuttlebutt is that Michael is wearing an oh-so-classy pair
of spats, just like Fred Astaire! (Rumor also has it, by the way, that
Mr. Astaire will be making a brief appearance on the 13th.) So, my
bloggy friends, it's time to get those fancy duds out of moth balls and
polish up your dancing shoes. We're going all out and puttin' on the
ritz at the Manor Ball.
I've got call into Johnny Depp, but Sir Anthony Hopkins, "Tony", my
date to the Manor Ball last year, got wind of it and apparently is ever-
so-jealous. Gosh, what is a girl to do?
If you're blue and you don't know
where to go to why don't you go
where fashion sits
Puttin' on the Ritz
Whoa! Only Fred Astaire can make a cane appear like the best dancing partner ever. How I enjoyed that.
ReplyDeleteHeh, heh! I kinda like this version better.
ReplyDeleteHey, Roy, that is a stitch!! I wish I had seen that one first. Actually, that's what the manor version will be more like! :D
ReplyDeleteHope you win your vintage gown at Christy.
ReplyDeleteAbout your dilemma with Johnny D and Sir Anthony, I say you ask them both to be your escorts. You are simply too much woman for either of them to handle. You are SMOKIN'!
EXCELLENT advice, Ronda. I wouldn't want to hurt either of these amazing men.
ReplyDeleteNow I am jealous the last time I saw Johnny, he said he would go with me. I just call him Capt'n Jack. If he goes with you I guess I will just have to meet him there. I called Fred and he asked me to save a dance for him.
ReplyDeleteQMM
Willow - is it invitation only or can I crash the ball. BTW AH is mine - you can have wimpy little JD. However, if Rob.Red. shows up AH will have to take a powder!
ReplyDeleteOhhh fun!
ReplyDeleteI hope you get the vintage gown. How very cool!
I can't wait to see the pictures.
Ooh, this sounds fun, Willow! Are giraffes allowed at the ball? I've missed a few posts, as we've been hoofing around on our Tours bus!
ReplyDeleteHe was some dancer. I used to watch him when he was in the movies and was amazed at some of the things he did.
ReplyDeleteLovely Fred. Someone will have to be Ginger for this event. I'm too pooped with all this harvesting of mine. where did you say I could rent a gown?
ReplyDeleteAll these stars that you have to dream of just to keep me out of your thoughts!! LMAO!!!
ReplyDeleteNow that song is stuck in my head!
ReplyDeleteI can feel the anticipation...
ReplyDeleteOooo . . . .I've adored Fred Astaire ever since I was a kid! How I longed to swirl around the dance floor in a pink, frilly frock! I was pea-green jealous of all of his dancing partners! Can't wait for a sneak peak at your lovely frock! Hugs, Terri
ReplyDeletegood luck with the gown..
ReplyDeleteand btw,
EITHER david letterman OR barack obama will be my escort. our president feels that escorting me might bring the "deathers" talk to an end...
Raph, I expect to see you in your giraffe tux!
ReplyDeleteWillow, I'm returning with Richard C again this year as I tend to be set in my ways.
Loved those dance cards, Willow--just seeing them now, as I've been busy and couldn't read my favorite blogs. Sounds like the big event is coming along! Go easy on Tony now...
ReplyDeleteIt is come one, come all, Bonnie.
ReplyDeleteAnd that certainly includes giraffes, Raph.
It would be so awesomely cool if Depp showed up at your door! ♥
ReplyDeletetee-hee, Otin, right!!
ReplyDeleteSay it ain't so! You are not going to Christy's. Are you? Really?
ReplyDeleteI am Cinderella "before" the ball. All I have are these old rags to wear. I need a fairy godmother. Or a winning lottery ticket.
Do you need any waitstaff?
Oh, Nancy, we've never had the President of the United States at the Manor!! What an honor. (Not to mention all those hunky secret service guys.)
ReplyDeleteCome on, Patty, this is a vertual ball...ANYthing is possible!! Jump on in, the water's fine in cyberspace. :D
ReplyDeleteClassic Fred!!
ReplyDeleteI've been perusing gowns worn by Lana Turner and also some of Jean Harlow's gowns. I think Will is wearing a simple tux. Let's face it, he looks good in everything!
Willow, you must take a peek at the gown I will be wearing to the ball! Won't Herr Mozart and I look stunning as we promenade together?
ReplyDelete(It's the blue gown in the first of the three choices.)

Lynette, your choice of gowns is absolutely stunning!! Can't wait to see you and Herr Mozart. Would you mind awfully, if I call him "Wolfy"?
ReplyDeletei can dance like that...at a cyber ball maybe. lol.
ReplyDeleteRob Pattinson has informed me that he is available to escort me to the ball. I knew he was tired of Kristen...anyway if you need an extra hunky Secret Service Agent to protect President Obama, I happen to have one that lives right here at my farm.
ReplyDeleteFC, you live with a hunky secret service agent?!! You lucky, girl, you.
ReplyDeleteI am wearing RED and I am dragging Mr.Gordon Ramsey kicking and screaming to the ball.
ReplyDeleteOh, I was hoping to score a date with my dreamboat Fred... I'm afraid I'll be in line! [sigh] But he's sure dreamy to watch.
ReplyDeleteYoli, oh, he's so cool. Wonder if it will be hard to keep him outta the kitchen?
ReplyDeleteFred Astaire is amazing but Gene Kelly is even better! Whoa, can he dance. Loved it.
ReplyDeleteAs my mother worked for years at christie's, Im quite sure I could get hooked up for some sort of deal!
ReplyDeleteYour mother actually worked at Christie's? How exciting is that? Yes, maybe you could put in a good word for me? ;^)
ReplyDeleteI'm actually a bit more of a fan of Gene Kelly, as well. I love his smooth athletic gracefulness.
Willow! Is it time for the ball again? I am SOOO excited! I had such a lovely time last year!
ReplyDeleteI hope I can make it. I'm still trying to find a date... and wouldn't cha know it? EVERY lady I've called, said they're "waxing their legs" that night! Drat!
ReplyDeleteI loved that movie! I think those movies defined my childhood - when you are feeling blue - just watch Fred putting on the Ritz!
ReplyDeleteGood luck at the auction.
ReplyDeleteIs it a sprung ballroom? This dictates my shoe choice.
Oh, good ol' Fred!! I am looking forward to this ball already. And as Groucho Marx would say:
ReplyDelete'Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.'
Greetings from London.
Willow,
ReplyDeleteThanks for cheering me up. :)
rel
Willow, may you be the winning bidder! And we wore spats in Navy boot-camp( called 'em "leggings", tho' )GAH! I like the look but try keepin' 'em clean, oy!
ReplyDeleteDear charming Skip, I don't believe it for a minute. You are so dashing in that tux, every woman is going to have you penciled into her dance card.
ReplyDeleteI love Fred Astaire and I used to belong to a cinema club held in the Mayfair Hotel in - believe it or not - Mayfair (very near the Ritz in fact). They would regularly show seasons of all the old b&w films including my favourite - La Garbo, but Fred and Ginger's films were my second favourite.
ReplyDeleteI knew the best part of the room to sit in to be beside the tastiest sandwiches that were served during the interval and would often go there with my mum. Ah me, memories.
Hello Willow,
ReplyDeleteHope you have the winning bid! Fred might make the rest of us a tad shy at taking to the floor. Your clip reminded me of Clarke Gable's attempt. Now that might give us all a chance!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij22kyvf2ps
Hey, I'd take Mr. Gable any day of the week over Mr. Astaire, dancing or not!
ReplyDeleteI love that video clip... have always loved Fred Astaire. I am a little late hearing about the ball. Only a week to find a partner and a frock... oh my! But I wouldn't miss it for the world. It's been so long since I have attended such a glamorous affair.
ReplyDeleteI just found my partner on Roy's video clip. I am bringing Gene Wilder! Maybe he and Fred can "put on the Ritz" together!
ReplyDeleteNow for the gown. I think I will look for one of Ginger Rogers' vintage gowns at the Hollywood prop warehouse.
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDo you have pics of what you are going to bid on?
Such a dilemma...I cannot decide whether to wear my vintage gown gifted to my Grandmother by none other than Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel or to wear one of my more recent acquisitions from Wallis Warfield Simpson. Did I mention there was a 'never published' love note from the Duke found in the pocket of this gown?
ReplyDeleteSo looking forward to the ball.
Any one else watch that video and have a Young Frankenstein flashback? (just curious.)
ReplyDeleteI now have had that song in my head!!!
ReplyDeleteI am hoping to see the gown Willow. Best of luck!
Thank you for the mention Willow and the clip of Fred.
ReplyDeleteMr Astaire and I have somethings in common........mostly it's the spats!
Yes, Willow. Christies in South Kensington, London for over a decade and was by default "in charge" of the natural history section, also knowing tons about china and porcelain too. When she left 4 men took her place each earning about twice as much! Rather old school back then. I remember one auction where Napolean's famous jacket coat was being auctioned along with a loo door from the Cavern that all 4 Beatles signed. Guess which one sold for three times as much--way over a million pounds? you got it--the latter!
ReplyDeleteI think I shall probably wear purple and then the farmer can wear his purple cummerbund - on the other hand gold lame is quite fetching - or maybe a little black dress with plenty of diamonds to brighten it up. Choices. Choices!
ReplyDeleteThere's a lot of electricity in the air over here! I can feel everyone's anticipation! :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like I better get busy on finding a gown! So many cyber choices out there! And I need a date!
Looks like great things are happening yet again at the manor.
ReplyDeleteYou have this dowager duchess thinking about it if she can rouse herself. Sit Peter Ustinov, ever a gallant escort, has offered already but there are Omar Sharif and greg Peck in the wings as well.
Look forward to it.
Will there be a Polonaise to start with?
So I was wondering. . . would a PĂșca be welcome as my date? His name is Harvey. He's big, though I'm not sure on dancing, but he's a great conversationalist, at least I find him so.
ReplyDeleteArija, I must say, you have extremely impeccable taste in men. I wouldn't mind if you brought all three!
ReplyDeleteKathleen, but of course! My Scots-Irish DNA will be a tinglin'. Harvey might get along well with our Willow Manor ghosts, as well.
ReplyDeleteFred Astaire is so amazing. I love his movies, especially with Ginger Rogers.
