Monday Mug Shots

Valerie (AcornMoon) and Pat (Weaver of Grass) are hosting "Mug
Monday", a fun posting of our favorite mugs. So, without further ado,
here are a few of mine. The one pictured above is a vintage blue
transferware commemoritive mug in honor of Willow Manor's home
state.
.
.
Here's my favorite Nicholas Mosse Irish mug with a pup that looks a
lot like our dear departed Ralphy.

.
This one's another vintage fave, transferware, as well. Across the
top it says: See all, hear all, say nowt, a Yorkshireman's advice to
his son. And across the bottom: Eat all, drink all, pay nowt...and if
ever tha does out for nowt, allus do it for thisen. (whatever that's
supposed to mean)
.

Another transferware (I love this stuff) commemorative of Queen
Victoria's Silver Jubilee. She doesn't look too happy about it, though,
does she?
And here's her great-grandson, King George VI and family, looking a
bit more pleasant.

For tea at Willow Manor you have a choice of Crabtree & Evelyn
annual mugs (I've been collecting these since they first came out in
the '80s)...

or my personal tea drinking favorites, the cheery Polish Boleslawiec.
So, there you have it. A few mug shots of my favorites. Happy Mug
Monday, dear bloggy friends!

  1. Now this looks like fun! Is the the 1995 Crabtree & Evelyn a blue and white featuring cats and kittens?
Yes, Victoria was a serious looking monarch was she not?

  2. Lovely collection. I wasn't aware of the annual Crabtree and Evelyn mugs. They are beautiful.

  3. great collection. like the "see all, hear all, say nowt" and of course the Boleslawiec. Hope your week starts off great!

  4. Willow nice setof mugs to accomodate all those plates, yes? As for the Yorkshire translation; "nowt" means "nothing" ,"allus" is "always" but no tsure wot "thisen" means( could be slang ). Here's a loose translation: "Eat all, drink all, pay nothing..and if ever that does out for nothing, always do it for(thisen)"--I think in this last part, he's tryin' to tell his son "don't get caught not paying for a meal, just make sure you've a full belly" or something like that...

  5. lOVE THEM ALL. We have given our collections to our children when we retired and downsized. I miss the wonderful mood those special things created whenever the table was set with some special collection.

  7. I think 'thisen' means 'thy self', unless anybody corrects me, I'd go with that. You have a lovely collection of mugs.

  8. Thanks, Subby and Star! It makes a lot of sense now. :^)

  9. FireLight, yes! The '95 mug is blue and white with cats and kittens! Do you have that one?

  10. Mugs. Everything but the shaving mugs. I guess that will be on some blogs. I never saw them decorated though. I think we have mugs somewhere but the ones I drink coffee from were old restaurant mugs we bought at a Goodwill store. The only place to find them.

  11. Edward, I don't know! Some days I desparately want one and other days I can't decide.

  12. Hi! Willow,
This is my first time commenting on your mugs/teacups, but all of your mugs/teacups, do look nice! Especially, your personal tea-drinking cup called the Polish Boleslawiec.
By the way, I forgot to mention how beautiful your plates are against that black wrought iron.

    Thanks, for sharing!

  14. Great mugs! I am such a sucker for any dishes, cups, antiques, etc, so these would catch my eye, too. I saw some of your Boleslawiec mugs at Marshalls recently and thought of you! (The internet cracks me up, that there I was in the middle of Marshalls and thought of you, Willow!) If you lived closer, I'd have picked up a few for you! I have gotten such great buys on the best stuff there at times.

  15. Why do mugs always look so cheerful? I love them all. I am totally ignorant of Crabtree & Evelyn annual mugs but they are lovely!

  16. Heh-heh, thanks for thinking of me, Sue! I found most of my Boleslawiec for great prices at TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Love both of those stores!

  17. Crabtree and Evelyn have such charming, unique finds. Delicate.

  18. Okay, what time is it? I'm way too happy to be leaving a comment right now, but hey, thanks for visiting. Love the Willow Manor mugs! Transferware is a particular favorite of mine. How were those 'Stankus' martinis? Had me laughing. I loved it! You are so much more sociable than I am.
    Love ya,
    Catherine

  19. Yes, Willow, I do have the 1995 E&C mug in blue and white. It came in a decorative tin with some teas and jams and it is the only one I have. Are you missing it? I did not realize they did one every year. I mainly went to the E&C in Montgomery or Atlanta for soaps and lotions.

  20. FireLight, yes, I have it, too. I started in '87 and have them all through '07 when I decided I was out of room! ;^)

  21. Hmmm...guess that should be C&E..."Lord, what fools these bloggers be!"

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wow! I like those! That's a grand collection.

  23. These are beautiful. So elegant The Manor, I love it here. I've bandied about a bit and invited myself to 'Mug Shots'. Please stop by and thank you Willow.

  24. What a gorgeous Nicholas Mosse mug, I have admired his sponge ware designs for years now.

  25. These are so lovely. I particularly like the Nicholas Mosse, and the association with your Ralphy. Greetings from Swansea, Wales.

  26. what a beautiful mug collection!

  27. What wonderful mugs.
    As regards the Yorkshire mug
    I'm pretty sure 'thissen'
    is 'for yourself'

    out or owt is 'anything'

Yorkshire people are meant to be canny and sensible!

  28. Exquisite mug shots! :-)

    You have a beautiful collection.

  29. I'm not a collector, at least intentionally, but I seem to be on the verge of a mug collection. It started when were on vacation in Owen Sound. We were in a art shop and I decided to purchase a pair of locally crafted mugs to remember the visit. The next year we went to North Bay and visited an art shop and I brought two more mugs...Then Ottawa then Halifax.

Now someone needs to stop me. Help, I'm becoming an collector!!!

  31. I am still in my "blue" period ( I may never leave it). Anytime I see blue china I have an instant love affair. My kitchen is blue, the china is blue, I have several sets of blue pottery mugs. I am hopeless! Your mugs are devine. When shopping, my nose leads me into Crabtree & Evelyn. Their scents are heavenly. The royal transferware is very cool. The Ohio mug inspired me. I have been to Ohio and I loved my visit. So I joined in the fun and posted a blog for Mug Monday.

  32. Impressive collection of mugs!

  33. I have about a dozen of the C and E mugs -- finally ran out of room -- but oh they are lovely!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Your mugs are so fancy! What a lovely collection. My favorite is way too boring to post. It's the perfect shape and size but has no decorative aspects at all.

What does that say about me? Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  35. what a fascinating selection of mugs, thanks for sharing!

  36. Willow, your mug shots are beautifully photographed works of art. You could hang these photos on the wall! I would just like to say with full conviction and sincerity,
"...if ever tha does out for nowt, allus do it for thisen." <3

  37. Not only did I enjoy your post, especially on a day when I am home with my daughter because we're both ill with the same cold (I bet she didn't like my latest column and passed her virus down to me, thanks, darling :-D, nice Fathers' Day pressie) but also I wish my wife read it. She is the one who collects mugs in our house. Whereever we go, Malaysia, Spain, we always bring back a set of mugs. I loved yours, especially the first two. Crabtree and Evelyn. I love that shop and adore their products. Many thanks for brightening up my day.

    Greetings from London.

  38. Oh, I do like your collection, and you've reminded me that I forgot to post any pictures of my Crabtree annuals.

    Best wishes.

  39. I've found some great Spode transferware at TJ Maxx over the years. Royal Doulton Bunnykins children's pieces, as well.

    Your collection is lovely.

  40. I had a bizarre collection of very kitschy mugs friends/relatives/co-workers bought me at airports .. all with city or state names and some truly tacky design .. some are still displayed on bookshelves at Casa Edelstein and others I gave away ... your collection puts mine to shame .. you are always a class act, Willow!

  41. Good Morning. Wow. I love all your Mugs and especially your Polish Pottery Mug. I have a polish pottery mug too and love it. Hugs Judy

  42. It's amazing the bond we have with our favorite mug! I guess it's the first friend we greet each morning!
I love all of your mugs, but that one with the dog is especially sweet!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Everything tastes better in a favorite mug! Isn't it awful when a favorite chips!

    ReplyDelete
  44. The polish ones are my favorites as well. Great collection!

    ReplyDelete
  45. No wonder you have so many comments about your postings on your glorious collection of mugs! Now I'd love to know where you keep them all and how you display them! Enquiring minds want to know!

    ReplyDelete
  46. COOL mugs, dearest Willow! LOVE the pup cup and George and family...beautiful mugs!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Lovely collection of mugs, Willow! A wide range of styles.

I do like the Yorkshire one! I like 'See all, hear all, say nowt,' though I'm sure that doesn't include commenting on blogs!

I understand the last part of that saying to mean, 'Eat everything, drink everything, pay nothing ... and if ever you do anything for nothing, always do it for yourself'! There now - how many giraffes do you know who speak Yorkshire?!!

  48. Isn't this fun? Seeing everyone's favorite mugs!

BTW, I've recently been visiting in your home state as my dd has just moved there.

  49. Hi, Willow! Always fun to see "the other Willow" out and about in the bloggyhood. Hope you enjoy Ohio.

  50. I love mugs! Tea cups and mugs and tea pots are my weak points. I don't have pictures of mine on me, but I'm starting to rack up a pretty hefty collection.

I love the transferware mugs too. I don't own one yet, much maybe that will change soon.

    Loved seeing your favorite mugs!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thank you for your comment. Yes, that is a self-portrait ... of my mug!

    Cheers.

  52. Hello Willow,

Super mugs! I have the '87 C&E mug - a Christmas present - which I always use for soup!

You've had much advice on the Yorkshire phrases, including Raph! As a Yorkshireman I can say this is one of the most well known. We use a lot of old English, especially thee, thy, thou. "Thisen" would be "thy self" as already mentioned.

Could I please correct one more thing(?) and say that King George VI was Victoria's great grandson!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Such a great collection of mugs! I love blue and white! The Crabtree and Evelyn mugs are great! I know I have seen this pattern in some egg cups. I going to check it out. I love them all, the mugs!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thanks, Derrick! Yes, you're right! George VI was Victoria's great grandson. A little slip on my part. I'll correct that...

    ReplyDelete
  55. Oh, I knew the Boleslawiec ones were going to make an appearance, BUT my absolute fave is the Irish one with the dog. (I would love to come across one of those!)

  56. I love your mugs. My favourites are the Crabtree and Evelyn and the Polish ones.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Mugs do have such individuality, real personality..if they could speak......

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh, they are all great but I love your Boleslawiec mugs because I have them too!! But I am Polish, which explains it

    ReplyDelete
  59. So many good ones here, but I just love that Yorkshireman! I wish that I could say "nowt" more often.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I love your mugs! I may have try Mug Monday myself. ; )

    ReplyDelete
  61. very nice collection. I don't think Queen Vic ever looked happy.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Amazing collection! I have nothing that exotic. In fact, I only have one mug, as I prefer cups.

    ReplyDelete
  63. They are all lovely Willow - doesn't everyone have a fine collection to put on their blogs.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Well I hope you still have plenty to show next week. Great mugs. I could hear the Yokshire accent there! :)
