Night and Day

I don't know about you, but I love the music of Cole Porter.
Delovely, was, of course, full of his wonderful music, but I felt the
brutal honesty of the film made it a bit depressing. Night and Day,
1946, was on TCM the other night, and believe it or not, it was
completely new to me. How could there possibly be an undiscovered
Cary Grant movie out there? Paired with the Cole Porter, it was a
big hit in my book.

Now, understand that most of this film is a fictional account, rather
than biographical. But, with that in mind, kick back and enjoy the
show. The debonair Grant is a wonderful Cole Porter and surprisingly
does a fine job singing many of the songs himself. Several stars
actually do play themselves, like Mary Martin and the charming
Monty Woolley (you remember him as the darling Professor
Wutheridge in The Bishop's Wife).

One interesting bit of trivia is that this is the first time Cary Grant
appears in full Technicolor. ((sigh)) So, put on the popcorn. This one
is elegant and entertaining!

  8. A wonderful tribute Willow. I constantly play Ella Sings the Cole Porter Songbook. His use of the English language is quite breathtaking.
Did you know that PG Woodhouse was engaged to rewrite some of the lyrics of Your The Top, to suit a West End, London audience?

  9. That's one movie I have not seen yet. And it was many years before I found out that one of my favourite top tunes was penned by this great man, Cole Porter: 'I've Got You Under My Skin'. Many thanks.

    Greetings from London.

  10. Hello Willow,

Cary Grant is usuall wonderful no matter what/who he plays! I saw this many years ago and it is fun but, as you say, Delovely tells the story more realistically and I don't suppose we can hide from that. The music is still great but Porter's life was obviously much more complicated, which must have been painful for him and those he loved.

  11. I'm having flashbacks to my childhood. We grew up on classic movies and musicals, sometimes staying up all night watching 'movie marathons'. I love Cary Grant. Just recently re-watched 'Penny Serenade'. Another great Cary Grant movie. A little sad at times but not as depressing as 'De-Lovely'. It has some hilarious scenes and also stars the fabulous Irene Dunne.

After reading your post I am getting hungry. May snack on some real pork cracklins.

  25. Wonders if Judi, Judi, Judi would approve of Cary Grant's sing about "bengal vomit". Schlokingly shocking for those days! Cutting edge lyrics for the age...hails back to risque Vaudeville! Burlesque even! Love their costumes, very elegant! Overall the song made me feel happy light and gay!

  33. Cole Porter is one of my favs, oh yeah.

Hey Willow I've been meaning to ask - because you might know - why is popcorn the movie food of choice? Do you know? Why not ... I don't know - potato chips or peanuts? Why popcorn?

  34. I soooo drooled over Cary in my youth, also Rock Hudson...those were the days. My Mum and I would head to the local theater, by ourselves and just live the fantasy right along with the stars.

    Thanks for the memories!

  37. What a delightful clip! I didn't know that this was the song that Emily and Richard sing (with a change of lyrics) in the Gilmore Girls final season. (They sing it to Rory during her graduation party at their house.)Also, I used to work at a diner while I was in college that was called Night and Day Cafe...I think it was a gesture to the time of this film...and maybe the song...come to think of it.
I also enjoyed your poem ...I like it's connection to the land and feeling of another time. <3
