Willow Manor Spring Purge

Have nothing in your house
that you do not know to be useful,
or believe to be beautiful.

~William Morris~

We often had yard sales at the manor in the spring, before the heat
and humidity of summer. Spring was a great time of year to have
one, after all the sorting and cleaning of the household closets,
dresser drawers, and kitchen clutter. The event was always a lot of
fun, as well, chatting with dozens of local folk who followed the signs
down to our little manor. Well, to make a long story short, I haven't
had a yard sale in years. It just seemed like too much work to put
one together. Is this my old age speaking? I do, however, have tons
of stuff desperately needing to be purged! Susan over at
29 Blackstreet has been in what she delightfully calls purgapalooza
mode and she has inspired me to do the same. I started today with
my closet and will gradually make my way through the house. For
the very first time, I've listed some items on eBay, starting with a
few handbags and on to other great junk that needs to be weeded
out. So, do keep an eye on my eBay listings. You can click on the
photo on my sidebar to take a peek. I'll be adding new stuff every
day or so during my Willow Manor Spring Purge.

  1. Spring cleaning?
    Great.
I too need to get rid of stuff so I'm sending a moving truck full of stuff to your house.

  2. Now I love to go to yard sales to look for books. I've bought old 19th century books for $1. They can be treasure troves.

  3. we are a family of pack rats...always in need of a good purging.... i always have stuff to put out for purple heart, salvation army, easter seals and whoever else calls, but it doesn't seem to do a lick of good....

i love this idea of having a purgapalooza!!

i used to have tag (yard) sales also, but I do think that maybe it is age, haven't had one in years.... altho I could use the dough ri me...it's just so much easier to give it away...

  4. Girl I live by that quote.

  5. Good for you! Yard sales are such fun--I used to have them when I lived in a cul de sac in VA, with some other friends. We'd all collect our things, and I'd be so thrilled to get rid of some clutter--only problem was, I'd look at their "offerings" and wind up wanting to buy them! So even though I lost some clutter, I brought more in! I got some wonderful bunk bed down comforters for $40 for Eric as a kid that way.

  6. We had a yard sale this year -- made more than $300 in 4 hours! (Of course, $130 or so was Kate's, she always makes out like a bandit!) It was really great to see all those empty boxes on garbage day! (The money was nice too, of course.) And now we can walk in the "storage" room, which is also nice--though that never lasts...

  7. The same urge has hit me -- I've been hauling off boxes of books and magazines to our library's free table.

Is it a kind of Lenten thing, I wonder? A spring tonic for our houses?

  8. That's a cool bag, and good luck with its sale! You're inspiring me to clean out. I especially like that quote at the beginning about 'useful' or 'beautiful'...

  9. Oh ~ and I meant to invite you to come leave a little comment and read some of my past. I'm celebrating 100 posts and have a tiny giveaway, if you're interested!

    I'll be back! ♥

  10. I've definitely gotta do this too. Maybe I will. You've got me going!

  11. Good reminder-- we've been talking about a yard sale for a couple of years. Thanks!

  12. Am still working in the studio and literally have a whole "shop" to sell......let us know how it goes. I am thinking of a warehouse sale with Flicker....?

  14. What an inspiring post...spring cleaning! I already feel the urge to tackle a few cupboards in the kitchen that have been making me crazy! I'll check out your sidebar too.

  15. Cool mannequin.

Have you considered adding the Buy it Now feature to some items? I'm always too impatient for the auctions...

Best of luck with your ebay site!

(and I love the term purgapalooza!)

you would do well selling items from your blog, too :-)

  16. Uncluttering your life is so liberating...that's how I feel when I get rid of some of my things. Unburdened.

  17. High Desert Diva, this is my first go around for selling on eBay. I went back to try to add the "Buy it Now" feature, and evidently I chose the simple format and it can't be added. But I will for future listings. Good idea. Thanks!

  18. I may be able to enter a purgapalooza
mode if spring ever comes and decides to stay.

  19. I need to purge my huge number of stuffs.
    And to clean my room.
    But I'm weak at them.

  20. ahh, the arrival of spring and one's thoughts turn to purging...it does somehow feel right.

i wonder if i just open all the windows and doors, perhaps the wind will just blow a lot of that junk away. :-)

  21. Yes, time to go lean and clean. Get rid of the winter coat, physically and residentially.

  22. Everytime I go into either of my daughter's rooms my energy gets clogged by being surrounded by too much stuff! I need to get inspired . . .

P.S. There are charity shops EVERYWHERE in England. They make it so easy to give stuff away. For me, a yard sale is too much work.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm thinking there's going to be more yard sales this year than any before.

BTW, have you finished the Jules book and if so, what did you think?

    Cheers!

  24. Hello Willow,

We seem to have been on a continual purge since moving home in 2006! Despite the tons of stuff that has already gone to the charity shops or the dustbin, we don't seem to be quite there yet! Good luck!

  25. I am with Bee, I seem to just give it to the Thrift Stores when I do the purging. I have not purged for a few years now. Maybe when my shoulder is well, I will do it again. Just hard, because when I have given stuff away, thinking we will not use it, all of a sudden we do.

Thanks for reminding us to do this.

  26. Yes, spring household cleaning! That's a good idea!

  27. OLD?

    Are you kidding me...

  28. I like the wooden 'thing' full of prickly pear cacti.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I try to do it at least once a year and often twice . . . but I've given up yard sales eons ago -- too much work for not enough money. I donate to charity now!

    ReplyDelete
  30. When we have a 'purge' we just move stuff round from room to room, so we don't bother any more!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. My daughter and I have held 4 yard sales since relocating 5 years ago... and the attic and basement is piling up again! Where does it all come from?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Purge is a good thing, that's why I love owning a shop...I buy your purge, you buy mine...purgefest!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Is that time of the year yet? Is that why my wife has been looking at our garden with narrow eyes? Oh, dear, where's the nearest travel agency? :-)

    Many thanks.

    Greetings from London.

  34. Have fun with the sorting. You'll feel light and bouncy when it's done...and that's a guarantee.

  35. Willow, I looked at your post this morning and thought what a great idea, I am inspired - first I took one look in our garage (too hard) and then walked inside opened my wardrobe and thought...no today is not the day, there is just too much to get rid of, much easier to keep it! xv

    ReplyDelete
  36. When you are done, wanna come do my closets? Please. Pretty Please.

    ReplyDelete
  37. We have major spring cleaning to do this year, Willow and will almost certainly have a yard sale.

    I never thought of ebay.

    ReplyDelete
  38. HiYa, Lots of visitors stopping by Black Street from the Manor. A Willow yard sale - now that's my kinda yard sale. What a great idea Willow to sell some of your treasures on ebay and they are indeed treasures as of course I've checked them out but unfortunately am not currently in the need of a handbag or a tres beautiful shirt. Perhaps I'll do the same with some of my more treasured items - things that you just hate to put in a yard sale.

We've had no power all day because of an ice storm. Did you see the movie The Ice Storm - it's a fav of mine - beautifully photographed. Love from tout la Gang.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's got to be that time of the year..yesterday, during the snowstorm, I decided to Spring clean.
Will keep an eye open for your stuff, what fun!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Love the Spring photo, btw.

Ive never tried e-bay for selling but have bough tings--all three were broken and were from people with high ratings.

Good luck to you. It will be fun ot see what you place up there. Make sure you can cover shipping!

Susan is oh so wise here.

  41. Your spring is the start of our autumn!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wish I could motivate myself to do the same, though whar good it would do I really don't know because the Prof, being squirrel minded, would find possible future uses for every piece of junk I discard!

  43. Willow, obscure reference: "Spring Cleaning" song featured on an episode of "Rocko's Modern Life"-totally hilarious...and I amy have to take a peek at your listings. Tho', I no longer use PayPal.

  44. Since we moved to the new house back in November, my storage area is packed with boxes of "stuff" for a Spring garage Sale.
It was a wake up call to be without the things
(which I thought defined me) for over 4 months now, and realizing I actually don't need them. There is a certain freedom in purging, isn't there?
I like your idea of posting them on Ebay. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Susan has me inspired too. Im clearing out and cleaning up. Feels good. An Autumn cleaning.

  46. I had no idea you and I were up to exactly the same thing! I'm a little behind on my blog reading.
Speaking of little behind, I wanted to join you and Elizabeth and start walking, but more snow and ice has arrived so I will have to postpone.

  47. Oops... I meant to say Leslie.

  48. It's really good to have a spring clean to throw away your old junk some people get sentimentally attached too. Plus if you sell on ebay or gumtree you can make a mint.
