She's at it Again!

This morning, I came downstairs to find the kitchen junk drawer
left completely open. Now, I have a thing about my kitchen cabinets
and drawers being left open. I'm always following behind those who
might not be such a stickler, (not to name any names, of course) and
closing any open drawers and cabinet doors. It's my Libra scales,
liking to have things in order.

Since I was the only one in the house last night, being greeted with
this opened drawer this morning, was a tad startling. Our little
resident ghost has been known to leave the junk drawer open, on
many occasions, but not so much recently. One particular time,
several years ago, the top drawer to the left was open and part of
the contents sorted out on the counter!

Come to think of it, last week, when WT and I were watching TV
around 8:30 one evening, we heard a loud clink, that sounded like
one of the lids on the glass canisters. It was audible enough to be
heard over the TV, and WT likes his volume turned way up! The
sink was completely empty and all the dishes put away, so it couldn't
have been a cup settling in the sink. The next night, at exactly the
same time, we heard it again, coming from the same spot, which, as
you can see from the picture, is in the same location as the drawer
in question.

Maybe she was just helping herself to a little evening snack from the
canister with the mixed nuts? (Which I'm sure some of you are
thinking is most apropos.) But what is she searching for in the junk
drawer?

And just in case you were wondering, here's a peep of the other side
of my old galley style kitchen.

  1. It's obvious from the photo ... the cabinet counter is at a severe tilt so I'm surprised all the drawers and doors are falling open.

  2. My daughters husband died two years ago of cancer and we are constantly hearing the lids of the candle jars being put back on and footsteps moving to the back of the shop...we know Matt is still there helping us with the candles.

A pleasant and welcome helper indeed!

Have a wonderful weekend Willow...NO SNOW!!!

  3. No idea what she is looking for, but I do like your drawer hardware.

  4. I think your spirit must have some past experience with the drawer that so happens to hold your junk. Perhaps she is looking for something that is no longer there.

  5. Your ghost tales are pretty amazing. Kind of gets those little hairs on the back of my neck to stand up.

  6. I used to live in Richmond VA, which was burned during the Civil War and full of ghosts, they say. My rocking chair would sway by itself all the time, and right before it started, my cat would tear out of the room in a panic.

Any idea what used to be in that spot before the cabinets? That's usually the key.

  7. Now I know who cooks all that food that makes me hungry.

In fact, now that we know you have a ghost, how are we to be sure that it is always you doing all the writing?

A ghost cook and a ghost writer? Worthy of a movie, I would say.

  8. I has seen those visitors myself which (in some ways) is a little disturbing than when things go bump in the night. At least she sounds friendly. My own Ghost Stories are attached below.

  9. Hi Willow-
It seems as if there was some kind of "awakening" of our spooks since yesterday! They read our blogs and just want some attention.
I too close drawers and doors endlessly. Do you think we need closure?

  10. A resident Ghost and a gallery kitchen! I'm jealous Willow !!

  11. Hm. Why not try leaving a few things dotted about and see if she (is it a she, do you think?) clears them all away.

  13. I think I am related to your ghost. When I was little I used to open drawers or cupboards, take out all the contents and line them up. I'd do this while my mother would be on the phone, out of reach... I think your friendly ghost is just trying to help;-)

  14. Heh, heh, right, Bill. I had to glue the canisters to the coutertop, so they wouldn't keep sliding off! ;^)

  15. Your kitchen is lovely Willow , especially the stove - how nice to cook and gaze out the window. Like the Ghost & Mrs. Muir and old classic and favourite that I'm sure you've seen. xo from les Gang

  18. A lonely ghost searching for its old things maybe?

Willow i love your stories =D they are very funny.

  19. Patty, how do you know for sure that I'm not a ghost...tee hee?!

  20. I thought we had a ghost at one point because I kept hearing noises at night. Turns out it was mice. Not very exciting...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Holy Moly...she's back! She was looking for that old key or a rubber band or a paper clip or as a metaphor for being lost and looking for something! I actually like looking through my junk drawer just to find little treasures I had forgotten about.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well dear, I don't know about the junk drawer, but if you could teach her to whip up an omelet, I would join her for breakfast. :)

    Great galley!

  23. lol. some of these comments are hilarious. intersting on the ghost, and its choice of raiding the junk drawer. anything in there that might be hers?

    ReplyDelete
  24. If I were a visitor to your house, I might find myself constantly opening the so-called junk drawer quite often just to marvel at how organized it is.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Freaky. Right now I'm watching on tv the real story behind the movie A Haunting in Connecticut.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The Ghost of Willow Manor. Perhaps you are the ghost, Willow.

Has anyone ever seen Willow in person?

I wish I had a ghost that cooked. And one that cleaned.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Uh oh, that ghost is at it again. I was going to ask you if you're sure you don't sleepwalk, and open drawers without realizing it, but then when I heard you were awake and still hearing noises, I thought, ok, that shoots that theory. Maybe your ghost was just straightening out your junk drawer. If that's the case, send her to my place when she's done there, ok!?

    ReplyDelete
  28. On the Internet, no one knows if you're a ghost . . .

The short ribs from your post a while back are simmering in my oven right now, sending wonderful smells through the house. I've got polenta too -- I can hardly wait!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oooh, I love seeing people's kitchens! Weird about your ghostie. I'd think the drawer just slid open if it weren't for the time with the things on the side. So odd. I love your jars by the way!

    ReplyDelete
  30. yikes! i'd be afraid! i love your kitchen, it looks so cozy and comfy...and clean. love clean kitchens :)
i also like those glass canisters...where did you get them with the domed tops??

    ReplyDelete
  31. Maybe she is looking for a nut cracker... LOL Only kidding. Maybe she just wonders what you keep in your junk drawer, or remembers what she kept there.

    ReplyDelete
  32. First let me say that your junk drawer is the most organized one I have ever seen...ours/husband's is a jumbled mess.
My ghost is not as quiet as yours...here is my
    ghost story

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree with Maureen that it may be the location of something else that was there at the time of the ghost's life. Interesting all the same.

    ReplyDelete
  34. She can come to my house and organize my drawers!

I like the drawers under the upper cabinets to the right of your stove top. How charming. In fact, I have a bit of drawer envy at the number of drawers your kitchen possesses. Thanks for the peek.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Vicki, hope you enjoy the short ribs! They're a bit hit around here.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I've always wanted to see a ghost. Maybe the gal just likes to cook!
    Catherine

  37. Hey, all, that's a very good idea to try and find what used to be at that spot before the kitchen cabinets. I know the original 1927 kitchen was remodeled in the
    1950's with the existing cabinetry.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Why not write her a little letter and put it in the junk drawer? You could seal it, and see if it was opened!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. oh, that would be most disconcerting, especially when home alone. hmmmm . . . what can she be after? perhaps a candle to light here way to the other side.

your kitchen is just lovely. i particularly like the gray and yellow combination.

hope you're enjoying your weekend, willow!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Don't you wonder why the ghost is hanging around and doesn't move along in her spiritual life? Maybe I shouldn't take it seriously? It just that being a ghost seems so lonely.

Patty's comment was funny... Ghost writer indeed! Willow, you don't seem to be the kind of person to have junk drawers...now at my house- I'm with Charmaine (HDDeva)-(although, I think she was fibbing because the photos of her interiors are beautiful)-could you come over to my house in Puerto Rico and give my house the Libra-(ian) organizational touch? It would be much appreciated and as far as I know there are no ghost messing things up...just people. :-) <3

  41. Creepy goings on at the Manor again? Good thing it doesn't frighten you. Maybe your wee ghostie is looking for something she left behind on her last visit.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oooh...I like Ralph Neckman's idea! Especially since you know her name! She does seem to have a fetish about that one drawer. May be it has to do with what was kept there before from the family just before you, instead of what was there when she was living.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Spooky yet endearing story. I think your kitchen ghost is helping you in trying delicious new recipes. That's only my humble opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I don't believe in ghosts, but I love your blog. I got here via The gold Puppy. When I first looked at your page, the picture of your kitchen, and scanned this entry, I assumed you must be English!

  45. Simply have a big sign printed with STAY OUT OF MY DRAWERS.
    That'll do it.

  46. Why am I not surprised that the Manor had a ghost. Perhaps you should leave her a little snack every now and then...just to be friendly

    ReplyDelete
  47. Good evening Wills,
    Impressive.
    Scary, yet impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  48. She must have a sense of humour, wouldn't you think? Which is quite a charming thing in a ghost. Sort of like Aunt Clara on Bewitched.

    ReplyDelete
  49. First off - love your kitchen!

Very strange with the junk drawer. I had an odd experience the other night. The night my father-in-law passed away I looked up and thought somehow the tea pot turned on because there was "steam" curling up by the ceiling in the kitchen. But when I went in the kitchen - nothing was turned on or boiling! The steam had already disappeared.

  50. I love ghost stories! This one is fascinating. Perhaps one day ... I'll post my own personal ghost story!

  51. Anoia!

    (Hem. sorry about this)

She used to have a perfectly good whistle in there, that she used to lure the birds to her window sill.
I supose she must be feeling lonely (the nuts would be for the birds too).

  52. It was the cutlery drawer in a house we had many years ago...and the garden with the smell of pipe tobacco.Spoooo-key.

    ReplyDelete
  53. How about leaving on the kitchen counter a plate with cookies and a thermos with Earl Ghost tea? ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Your kitchen is so beautiful!

I wonder what the ghost wants from that drawer. Have you ever "asked" her? You could maybe remove it and put it somewhere where she has access.

It's hard for ghosts to move physical objects. It must be so important to her.

    ReplyDelete
  55. What better place for a ghost to hide than the junk drawer!

We never look in there for anything, knowing we'll never find it amongst all that junk!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Put out a glass of milk and a biscuit for her, she may enjoy that.

    ReplyDelete
  57. An outline of your book ?? ... Hooray!! What book ?? Did I miss a post ? Details s'il vous plait, do tell Madam. xo S & les Gang

  58. She's really powerful.Maybe she wants to say something to you.I don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yes I agree, maybe your ghost is hungry! xv

    ReplyDelete
  60. Love your kitchen (and I absolve you of your cleaning duties - your house is immaculate - you great pretender)!

I'm one of the guilty ones, I'm afraid - I leave cupboard doors, drawers, and closet open constantly. It's the active brain moving on to other things and forgetting what's behind.

I think your ghost has impeccable taste to be residing with the likes of you!

  61. Well, one fact you can't deny is that she (or maybe a 'he'? I don't know, just wondering) is punctual and always on the dot if she rummanged through your kitchen at the same time two nights running. Many thanks for another slice of 'ghost stories'.

    Greetings from London.

  62. We heard laughter at a haunted park in Milwaukee last fall while my BF was photographing haunted locations for a project he is working on. We've enjoyed reading your tales of the WM ghost. If you'd like more haunted reading go to
The blog is being reworked as we speak to personalize the experiences rather than renumerate facts and history. The images are beautifully haunting in IR and play well into the haunted legends of these places. Enjoy!

  63. I love Bill's comment!

And I agree with Ralph, you should write her a note and put it in the drawer. See what she does next.

Would be interesting to see what was in that spot originally!

  64. You have a beautiful kitchen! :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Now if you could get ghost to clean .. wouldnt that be great?!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Interesting...I hope you keep us posted on "her" continual visits.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hello Willow,

If things go to plan, this will be your 70th comment??!! Guess your visitor can really stir things up?

    ReplyDelete
  68. You have a lovely kitchen...no wonder your friendly ghost can't say away from it. As a kid, I remember being fascinated with the glass canister from the coffee shop down the street. There were more than 20 of them full of sweets and other colorful goodies...I wanted to open all the lids and sneak my hand in there [and I'm not a ghost ;)]

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hmmm...I don't think I could stay on my own in the house with a ghost...well, a ghost that makes it's presence felt, that is.

    ReplyDelete
  70. What's going on here? I think your ghost came thru the internet and drained the batteries in my camera. No fair!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. She must be trying to get your attention. Try letting her know that she has it and ask for more info.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Having lived with various ghosts, the only thing I can tell you is to talk to your ghost and let her know that it is okay for them to live there along with you and that you accept them willingly into yours and their house. That may or may not have been her home, she could of just settled there and is just interested in seeing your junk drawer, kinda like when someone looks into someone's medicine cabinet. Your ghost could just be trying to figure you out. As long as you have no fear of the ghost, it will treat you with respect. Sometimes they like to play games with those they know who are afraid. I think it is what keeps them entertained.

I love your kitchen. I totally agree with the comment from HDD. I wish I had all those drawers.

    God bless.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Through the galley she nightly goes,
    Barely there on ghostly toes.
A bauble, a thread, she searches the drawer,
All to illumine the Manor’s lore.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Oh Willow! I love these stories. I completely believe that your Spirit is just a playful kind Spirit. Maybe she likes to leave it open because you are so meticulous!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Wow, I wish my kitchen were so organized. I keep having this horrible feeling my mom is going to turn my name into one of those organizer reality shows.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Wow...just imagine. What if there is a false bottom in that drawer...and she's trying to get you to discover some ancient clue to her death...

    Just a random thought. =]

    ReplyDelete
  77. I love that you can cook and look out the window at the same time!

The idea of ghosts in my house I would not love so much...

    ReplyDelete
  78. Willow- she must feel safe with you to turn up so often!!Salut,

  79. My friend Amanda came downstairs today, only to find her two year old son, Javen, had opened the locked art supply drawer and cut his shirt in multiple places!

Not spooky, but very funny. He immediately said "bad boy," when he saw her astonished face!

    Apparently, drawers house excitement today!

  80. I used to live in a huge house which was built in the 30's. Before that I was very skeptical about ghosts, spirits, and such. My room mate and friends all experienced sudden cold drafts, opened drawers, and unexplained noises. It was creepy at first but after awhile we got used to it. It was like we had an unseen third room mate. One New Years Eve in the wee hours we were cleaning up after the party and a door slammed shut upstairs. It sounded like a gun shot...that was the scariest event. I'm a believer now.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Are you sure you are not sleepwalking? I do believe in ghosts and I think you should try to write this ghost's story. It would be a lovely book. I'm sure you could do that brilliantly! I love your kitchen! It looks so organized! xx

  82. Hail friend, well met! I'll introduce you to my poltergeists one day.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I'm completely fascinated by your stove being in front of a big window. If it was mine, I'd have all sorts of food splashed all over it. I'm also wondering about those cute little boxes under your cupboards. I grew up in a galley style kitchen with pine cabinets, but have never seen anything like those boxes.

    ReplyDelete
  84. KellyPea, those cute little boxes are pull out bins. I think they're adorable and keep my tea and sweeteners in them.
