Willow's Weekly Word

I've noticed that quite a few in the bloggyhood have had birthdays
in the last week or so, making them all born under the symbol
Capricorn, (December 22-January 20) the tenth sign of the zodiac,
symbolized by a goat, sometimes depicted with the tail of a fish.
Capricorn is associated with the Greek myth of the goat Amalthea,
who provided the infant Zeus with milk and Zeus, in turn, placed
her in the sky to honor her. Capricorn is ruled by the planet Saturn.
The Babylonian god Ea wore a cloak designed as a fish's skin,
complete with head and tail. Among his names was "Antelope of
the Seas". What better description of a fishtailed goat?

Capricornians develop self discipline and become sure footed like a
mountain goat. Capricorn is a cardinal, therefore initiating, sign. It
is an Earth sign, and so is practical and structured. On the whole,
Capricorn is a serious sign. People with this sign like to be in control
and are accepting of responsibility. They are willing to make great
efforts to reach their goals through patience and persistence. Order
and structure are part of the Capricorn world. They generally
respect authority, are solid and reliable. Tending to be reserved,
they can be a little on the shy side.

The body part associated with the Capricorn is the knees. Dark
gray, black and dark brown are the colors usually associated with
Capricorn. Gemstones are onyx, quartz, beryl, obsidian, and
amethyst. The plants are ivy and pansies. Countries are India,
Mexico, Afghanistan, Macedonia, Lithuania and the region of Thrace.

Happy Birthday out there, all you trusty bloggy Capricornians!

  1. How timely this is! I was just thinking of my Dad who celebrates his 80th today. He fits that description exactly!

  2. Well, that's certainly part of me but then I am on the cusp!

  3. Yes, sounds like my daughter, too. (That's her sign as she's soon to be 17)

  4. Missed it by that much. Wait til summer!

  5. Sounds like me, the shyness, and I've always disliked my knees!

  6. Thanks, Willow! This is very interesting. I hope you do this for the other signs as they come up, too. Nice to have so much information come up at the right time.

  7. Great post, Willow! I'm absolutely fascinated with astrology and find it even more intriguing when one goes deeper into it to reveal rising signs and planets. I've had my birth chart done, and it's amazing. It absolutely pegs me. My oldest daughter is a Virgo with Capricorn rising and she displays many of the Capricorn traits mentioned here.

  8. as usual, I'm behind here - the poem, Dust, was just amazing - I need to find that book - and 704 followers! imagine - well you don't have to imagine because it is the reality and yes, OMG! - my husband is a Capricorn -just had his birthday on New Year's Eve!

  9. Mmm, there's some of me there. The shyness bit, respect for authority, patience and persistence is right.

But.... I'm messy, unstructured, definitely not in control and black, brown and grey are not my colours.

I enjoyed reading it though thanks.

  10. nothing to do with your latest post (although my closest friend is a Capricorn)but I liked your comment

'Oh my god can this be right?'

about the number of followers you have. You'll be able to start your own religion soon. It's a fantastic achievement, willow - you should be mighty proud.

  11. You've chosen beautiful images to go with your post.

  12. My b-day is coming up a week from today. The description pretty well describes me, except for the parts about respecting authority and being shy! (: )

Thanks for posting this. I especially love the images you chose to go along with the post.

  13. This is really fascinating, Willow. I know very little about astrology.

The images you have chosen are beautiful - I love the light in the second one especially.

  14. My son's a Capricorn and he's not very rooted at all. He sometimes reminds me of Libras; my best friend in Cuba is one. As for responsibilities, he avoids them if he can. So, I think the Zodiac made a mistake there. The other three in the family do meet our criteria, especially my daughter (Pisces) and me (Scorpio). My wife is Leo and yes, she... is... very.. Leo. :-)

I loved the history behind the term 'Capricorn'.

    Greetings from London.

  15. I have always found astrology interesting. I confess I don't believe in it (but I don't believe in organized religion as well as many other things either!) but I am fascinated by how involved it is.

You mentioned that the body part associated with Capricorn is the knees. Now that is something I never knew before - that various signs have associated body parts! Interesting! (As I am a Virgo I am a bit curious to find out what body part is associated with that sign!)

As always, a most interesting post! I enjoy reading your blog and will try to comment on a more regular basis.

    Take care.

  16. Hi Willow,

Looks like you've started something. I hope you're going to keep going because it'll be a while before my sign comes around!

    Unfortunately, I don't knowingly know any capricornians - a few goats, maybe!:0)

So many cool Capricorns out there.
    So when is your birthday?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't know anyone with a birthday in January. So no Capricornians around in that line! I can never quite make up my mind if there is anything in the stars or not! But I am Cancer and I love my home (my little crab shell) and retreat when a bit hurt (that doesn't happen too often). So maybe......

  22. An Aries here, but many of the characteristics sound like mine. I wonder if there are similarities between the goat and the ram.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love your posts....I fully embrace astrology. Of course , I believe in almost everything - makes life so much more fun. Whenever someone doubts the planets - I just use the example of my three children - they should be the Astrology Poster Children.

  41. As a Cappy, thanks for the birthday wish. :)

  42. My mother is a Cap and my father was too. Except for the colours, that was just like them. They carried much of the world on their shoulders, sometimes to the point of exhaustion. I would have given up much sooner.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks for this! I didn't know most of this . . . a bit confused about the fishtailed goat thing. I do wear lots of brown, though. :)

I'm a Capricorn, and so are my mother and my mother-in-law (who actually share the same birthday). It brings new meaning to "marrying your own mother," right?

  49. Very intereting information. My dad and one of my sisters were born under Capricorn. I find the subject of political astrology fascinating. So when you mentioned countries that are Capricornian in scope I remebered an article I read about Cuba being a Scorpio country (Sensuous and Mysterious)before the 1959 revolution and becoming a Capricorn country (Driven and Pragmatic) after the Socialist regime took power. Very interesting indeed.

  53. Yes, 'tis me as well, I'm 53 today! All of those traits seem to be imprinted on my microchip, serious, earnest, responsible, a little shy. Oh how I wish I could throw them all up to the universe for a moment & be totally irresponsible, impulsive & unpredictable, what a liberating experience that would be be. Confusing to my family, but what a time I would have!
My 4 closest friends are all Cappy's too - there is a Doctorate in the study of that phenomena for sure.
    Millie ^_^
It was Elvis's b/day yesterday, so he was a Cappy too - mmmmm!

  54. yeh... my knees are killing me... throw in a collagen fiber deficiency and I'm a wreck if I don't keep the thighs as strong as possible...

must be my Leo rising sign that negates the respect of some "authority" figures.... and ..honestly, ...I really don't like black, brown or gray .... give me pastels any day...
