Night and Day
I don't know about you, but I love the music of Cole Porter.
Delovely, was, of course, full of his wonderful music, but I felt the
brutal honesty of the film made it a bit depressing. Night and Day,
1946, was on TCM the other night, and believe it or not, it was
completely new to me. How could there possibly be an undiscovered
Cary Grant movie out there? Paired with the Cole Porter, it was a
big hit in my book.
Now, understand that most of this film is a fictional account, rather
than biographical. But, with that in mind, kick back and enjoy the
show. The debonair Grant is a wonderful Cole Porter and surprisingly
does a fine job singing many of the songs himself. Several stars
actually do play themselves, like Mary Martin and the charming
Monty Woolley (you remember him as the darling Professor
Wutheridge in The Bishop's Wife).
One interesting bit of trivia is that this is the first time Cary Grant
appears in full Technicolor. ((sigh)) So, put on the popcorn. This one
is elegant and entertaining!
Never saw that one. I'll have to see if I can find it.
ReplyDeleteYour dinner sounds good, pasta and coconut pie, what could be better.
Popcorn, yes always ready for the popcorn. You are the one..
ReplyDeleteI love Cole Porter. And Cary Grant.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check it out also. I love Cary Grant and The Bishop's Wife is my favorite movie of all time!
ReplyDeleteI had seen this, but that didn't stop me watching it again!
ReplyDeleteNight and Day you are the one... Only you beneath the moon and under the sun... :D
ReplyDeleteOn my list - actually I am really enjoying all the oldies at the moment. xv
ReplyDeleteA wonderful tribute Willow. I constantly play Ella Sings the Cole Porter Songbook. His use of the English language is quite breathtaking.
ReplyDeleteDid you know that PG Woodhouse was engaged to rewrite some of the lyrics of Your The Top, to suit a West End, London audience?
That's one movie I have not seen yet. And it was many years before I found out that one of my favourite top tunes was penned by this great man, Cole Porter: 'I've Got You Under My Skin'. Many thanks.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
Hello Willow,
ReplyDeleteCary Grant is usuall wonderful no matter what/who he plays! I saw this many years ago and it is fun but, as you say, Delovely tells the story more realistically and I don't suppose we can hide from that. The music is still great but Porter's life was obviously much more complicated, which must have been painful for him and those he loved.
I'm having flashbacks to my childhood. We grew up on classic movies and musicals, sometimes staying up all night watching 'movie marathons'. I love Cary Grant. Just recently re-watched 'Penny Serenade'. Another great Cary Grant movie. A little sad at times but not as depressing as 'De-Lovely'. It has some hilarious scenes and also stars the fabulous Irene Dunne.
ReplyDeleteI think my wife and I might have seen this film but it was so long ago that it slipped my mind. She is the big movie fan.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your post I am getting hungry. May snack on some real pork cracklins.
Love the picture of your sitting room -- a wall of windows,a wall of books, comfy sofas -- perfection!
ReplyDeleteI love the way he smokes and gestures with his hands while 'playing' the piano. Charming.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds just great. I'd like to eat popcorn with you on your big comfy couch too. I think we are all singing the same song as we read this one.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe I've seen one that you had not before! But then, I'm sooooo much older than you my dear.
ReplyDeleteLoved the movie; one of my favorites of Cary Grants.
YOU !!!!
ReplyDeleteno, i love cole porter !

ReplyDeleteAnd I missed it. I watch TCM a lot. Sounds like a divine movie.
ReplyDeleteThanks for keeping a running list of good movies. You are a great movie critic.
I love Cary Grant. He's one of my all time favorite actors...not to mention handsome. I've not watched this movie, so I'll definitely put it on the list!
ReplyDeleteLove the song, love Cary Grant, love Cole Porter; never heard of the movie, so never knew the origin of the song. Thanks! "You're the top..."
ReplyDeletei think i've seen almost every cary grant movie there is. i do love "night and day" - although it's been a few years. i'm introducing my hubby to the wonderful world of classic movies, so i'll have to put this one on my netflix list for him to see. thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteyou have seen "arsenic and old lace" right? early cary grant and it's fantastic. that's one of my all-time favorite movies.
Hi Willow. Pappy
ReplyDeleteIt was a fun movie ..
ReplyDeletegreat clip. will have to check it out. pass the popcorn please.
ReplyDeleteUmmm ... this looks like a definite Oldie But Goodie ... .
ReplyDeleteJJjj
Wonders if Judi, Judi, Judi would approve of Cary Grant's sing about "bengal vomit". Schlokingly shocking for those days! Cutting edge lyrics for the age...hails back to risque Vaudeville! Burlesque even! Love their costumes, very elegant! Overall the song made me feel happy light and gay!
ReplyDeleteCary Grant fan here. Any post with Cary in it just makes my day! I love this movie...I love every movie he made...even the darker, dramatic films. I saw someone mentioned "The Bishop's Wife" which I watch constantly from Thanksgiving until New Year's.
ReplyDeletePlease pass the popcorn!
I think I've actually seen this movie a very long time ago.
ReplyDeleteLover your side bar pictures, btw. Your house remains so incredibly warm and inviting.
Your Film screening room looks very appealing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a blissful clematis by your front door!
ReplyDeleteYes, of course I'll watch Roman holiday with you any time you suggest it.
excellent stuff, thank you Willow!
ReplyDeleteI will DEFINITELY be checking this movie out tonight!
ReplyDelete"Birds do it; bees do it; even educated fleas do it..." I've never seen this one either. I'm sure I'd like it if Cary's in it. He's always a joy. Have fun with your special guest, Willow!
ReplyDeleteCole Porter is one of my favs, oh yeah.
ReplyDeleteHey Willow I've been meaning to ask - because you might know - why is popcorn the movie food of choice? Do you know? Why not ... I don't know - potato chips or peanuts? Why popcorn?
I soooo drooled over Cary in my youth, also Rock Hudson...those were the days. My Mum and I would head to the local theater, by ourselves and just live the fantasy right along with the stars.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the memories!
I've recently downloaded Ella F singing Cole Porter and Irving Berlin and it is never off my mp3 player. wonderful stuff - as are Cary Grant films.
ReplyDeleteHi Willow...thank you for visiting and the birthday greetings!!! Ahhh...Cole POrter, some of my favourite music, especially Begin The Beguine ♥
ReplyDeleteOh, it is! This is great.
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful clip! I didn't know that this was the song that Emily and Richard sing (with a change of lyrics) in the Gilmore Girls final season. (They sing it to Rory during her graduation party at their house.)Also, I used to work at a diner while I was in college that was called Night and Day Cafe...I think it was a gesture to the time of this film...and maybe the song...come to think of it.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed your poem ...I like it's connection to the land and feeling of another time. <3
Just catching up......I enjoy your blog so much....have I mentioned that lately?
