.
We're so proud of our youngest's girlfriend, who has the enviable
summer internship at our local police department. It's always
fascinating to see what she's been up to, on any given week.
Last night, she filled us in on her work with training the K9 crew.
.
Here she is in the bite suit, working with Barrie, a German Shepherd
from the Netherlands, and officer Eric Cochran. Barrie's main duties
include building and area searches, evidence location, criminal
apprehension and narcotic detection.
.
At one point, she had to run, with Barrie in pursuit. She didn't hear
anything, so turned to look. Barrie was airborne, landing on
her back to bring her down. She said it was a lot of fun. I love dogs,
but heavens to murgatroyd! I don't know about you, but I'd have
to think twice about getting into that bite suit.
Uhm...adrenaline rush anyone? Screaming your head off in abject terror anyone? That would be me :)
ReplyDeleteI can think of a lot of things I would rather do than have a dog leaping on me or biting me. Wow. It must either hurt or scare the daylights out of a person.
ReplyDeleteYou probably don't remember when people lived and died at home and endured wakes. I wrote about it here. http://bing-it.blogspot.com/
Heavens to murgatroyd indeed! And she has a smile on her face....
ReplyDeleteAh .. .
ReplyDeleteto be young and fearless -
yikes! what if the dog bites your neck after you fall over! oh the horror!! :p
ReplyDeleteInteresting story-- she must be a brave & self-assured young woman.
ReplyDeleteOh how fun! And we were just talking about this from 45 years ago! She's brave!
ReplyDeleteI'd be a nervous wreck! I saw a movie on TV once about K-9 dogs trained for police depts, and the training looks so scary to me. She's a brave girl!
ReplyDeleteBetsy, I know! Talk about synchronicity. We were just talking about our memories from childhood yesterday afternoon and then she tells us about this just a few hours later. Crazy.
ReplyDeleteAW! I love your post! I'm still amused to see myself smiling in those pictures!
ReplyDeleteOh I have always loved Alsations, but she's still a brave woman!
ReplyDeleteShe looks happy even! I on the other hand feel my knees crumbling at the thought of seeing a big dog in pursuit?!! Yes, brave girl!
ReplyDeleteI'm a pretty brave soul but I'd have to draw the line at a biting dog!
ReplyDeleteNow there's an interesting topic for "What I Did Last Summer." I believe I'd want head protection too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a COOL job - I would love to do this!
ReplyDelete"There once was a girl who less wary,
Trained dogs to detect all things scary.
She put on a suit,
And dodged the pursuit,
Of a furry big shepherd named Barrie."
Hee-hee!!!
Why is her head not protected! ugh...and imagine being the person, NOT expecting the dog...ecks! What Fun!
ReplyDeletehope you don't mind... but YOU'VE BEEN TAGGED! :D
ReplyDeleteI think it would be fun but maybe when I was younger...falling down a lot would give me pause...ouch! and what a happy face on face this sweet girl. <3
ReplyDeleteNo, thank you!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm either too old, or too cowardly! Probably both!!
Good Day Dear Willow,
ReplyDeleteWhat I'd do to have a dog! I'd even put up with a bite or two! Around a year ago my building management decided to allow pets. Now everyone in Bethesda has a dog or two. I'm just not home enough to take proper care of a beloved 4 legged friend. I wish I was. Gotta figure that out.
Right now I'm off. Grilling albacore to be served with a luscious tapenade I just whipped up.
Best,
David

Brave girl! She must have a lot of moxie.
ReplyDeleteJust the thought of that "silence" coming up behind her while in pursuit ... a scene straight out of a Hitchcock movie.
ReplyDeleteWhat a strong spirit!
ReplyDeletewow. crazy. when those dogs hit you...sure it was fun and she is learning a lot. interned with the police at one point in life myself.
ReplyDeleteAnd nothing on her head!
ReplyDeleteI covered a demonstration of one of our police dogs recently. The policeman was covered from head to toe. I could hardly see his eyes.
I have a couple of attack cats. So buglers beware!
Me too, about wearing the bite suit. However, better to wear it than get bit! I love dogs too & am amazed at their capabilities!
ReplyDelete...! Is she smiling?! I have no idea how I would react under that kind of "pressure"!
ReplyDeleteAs long as I was in the suit, I think it would be very much fun!
ReplyDeletecompletely adore her courageous, no-fear attack on life!! it looks like a once-in-a-lifetime experience and good for her!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a scary experience. We must raise these dog's salary, they are so committed to get the intruder or criminal. ;-)
ReplyDeleteEdward is shocked! Shocked!
ReplyDeleteI am not sure I would do this, but I love the fact that she has a smile upon her face.
ReplyDeleteoh,
ReplyDeletei did that once years ago in high school.
i think the cops showed us how terrifying & deadly the dogs could be for a reason.
needless to say, i have never been in trouble with law.lol
xx
I love dogs absolutely adore them. This looks like a lot of fun, yeah, I am one of those crazy people.
ReplyDeleteKate would love that! She's been talking about joining the FBI for years...wonder if they have a program like that around here.

If you ever decide to take up writing crime fiction she will be great for research material. No way is that my idea of fun! I was attacked years ago by a german shepherd and I still remember my terror when I turned around to see him leaping upon me with bared mouth and fangs dripping in anticipation. It's a good thing we are all different in this world!
ReplyDeleteNo way, weapons to avoid.
ReplyDeleteThe experience would send me into a heart attack.
Good doggie...uh...nice doggie...
ReplyDeleteTalk about a job that takes some steel nerves! Bully for her. An older cousin of mine used to train dogs for the police/private owners and for shows. I've seen the results of the former training, up close. Too close!
Better than not having the bite suit on. Pappy
ReplyDeleteYeee-haaaa! Looks fun to me, too! Where can I get one of those bite suites?
ReplyDeleteWillow, our youngest's girlfriend is working in Reception @ a 5-star Hotel in the City. By all accounts, she definitely needs to borrow that Bite Suit. The things that poor girl has to endure in dealing with grumpy guests would send a lesser mortal into melt-down!
ReplyDeleteMillie ^_^
Hello Willow,
ReplyDeleteI thought the idea was to let your arm trail for the dog to grab, not for it to take a flying leap!! Brave girl!
So would I, I would definitely have second thoughts before becoming a dog's training toy. Your future daughter-in-law is a brave woman indeed. Many thanks for this post.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
Fascinating. Not sure exactly what internship implies... do we know what happens at the end of it?
ReplyDeleteMe too! My sister was a summer intern for out local police department back in the day. More power to ya I say.
ReplyDeleteShe said it was fun??
ReplyDeleteWhen the K9 dogs are trained, the dogs think this is such a great game to play and get right into it. I was at a dog show in Montreal once where a Standard Poodle came in from the confirmation classes to put on a demonstration of a protection dog. The collar was changed and the poodle became a different dog. He was able to bring the guy in the padded suit down and stand on his chest showing a good set of teeth.
ReplyDeleteEarly training with the padded suit entails having the dog on a long leash, but later that leash is removed so the dog can give chase in certain situations. Only those dogs who respond to verbal commands are allowed off the leash.
Sounds fascinating....and at least it wasn't a pit bull!
ReplyDeleteYep, us Barrys are known for our bite!
ReplyDeleteARF!
Yep, us Barrys are known for our bite!
ReplyDeleteARF ARF!
Heavens to murgatroyd is right! I love dogs too but afraid not of the stuff it would take to train (and be attacked) police dogs! Wow!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Yes, that's me in the pic with the Bootleg Beatles post today.
Hannah, you're too cute. I loved writing this post! :D
ReplyDeleteSuza, that was just too darn clever! Thanks for the smiles, dear friend!
Yikes!
