Love the story! A lot of our older neighbors here in the mountains of NC didn't have names for various shrubs beyond 'ol' yaller flower'(forsythia) or 'ol' pink flower' (weigela), And they tended to call lots of flowers lilies -- whether they were or weren't.

ReplyDeleteLOL--sounds familiar. Hey--he did good. They're so pretty. I went through Duke gardens today and saw some gorgeous things blooming and snapped about a million photos. Lilacs area a huge fave of mine. Ours will be fading soon--I wish they lasted all summer.

Lilacs are absolutely one of my favorite flowers. They won't be here for a couple weeks, though. We are enjoying the forsythias and the trees are in blossom. It's all beauty. Spring is so gently, richly sensual. When the lilacs do get here, the scent will fill my house if I can possibly make it happen. You can not have too many lilacs, and yet just a little sprig can change the whole atmosphere in a room.

ReplyDeleteSo true. I think as little girls we were so wrapped up in flowers. ie. "This is a daffodil and this is a tulip and this is a rose" and we all cut them out at Easter from construction paper. I don't think boys cared about that stuff.

I planted a purple lilac.
R very kindly pruned it in March.........
tomorrow I will rush up to the green market to buy armfuls of lilac.
