overheard at the manor

WT: I'm walking up to get the mail.

Willow: Hey, can you take the clippers with you and bring
back some lilacs?

WT: Okay. How many do you want?

Willow: A nice big bunch. Thanks, Honey.

Ten minutes later, WT taps on the kitchen window.

WT: What are lilacs?

Your bouquet is just gorgeous. I imagine they smell sweet, fresh and springy.

  2. Very funny! Love the "story" and the gorgeous photo! And I also love your new header as well...really a treat...and invites me in...

  3. That's just how we operate. If there was a forest fire, a charging lion or a moving car without brakes - we would know what to do. Flowers - not so much.

  4. Although I do know a fair number of Eberle's plants, I've got to admit I've been in that position, too (tho not with lilacs). That's a good one.

  5. No way. Really? I love lilacs, ours won't be in bloom for another couple of weeks. Their scent is so perfect, and fleeting, which makes it even more perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  6. I love it when they say that! LOL!!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I hear ya! If it's not a Rose, he don't know, just thinks their all pretty! LOL!

  8. Love it!

Love the perfume of lilacs too - they're not quite out here yet, but when they are - glorious!

  9. Love the story! A lot of our older neighbors here in the mountains of NC didn't have names for various shrubs beyond 'ol' yaller flower'(forsythia) or 'ol' pink flower' (weigela), And they tended to call lots of flowers lilies -- whether they were or weren't.

  10. That would be my son. Hilarious. And lovely. Our lilacs won't be in bloom for a few more weeks. I can't wait.

  11. LOL--sounds familiar. Hey--he did good. They're so pretty. I went through Duke gardens today and saw some gorgeous things blooming and snapped about a million photos. Lilacs area a huge fave of mine. Ours will be fading soon--I wish they lasted all summer.

  16. That is so cute!

Our lilacs are blooming, too! They are right by a window that I left open... on purpose!

  17. You must have shown him, cause they are gorgeously gracing your house. I see others with healthy lilacs in my neighborhood. I have had no luck. My bushes are slim-picking most years. I forget to feed, or...

  18. LOL!! Our lilacs are blooming too and the aroma is beyond lovely.

  19. That is so funny. I used to know a man who called all flowers roses. I thought he was unique in that respect (after I figured out that he wasn't kidding).

  20. Oh my gosh....are they ALL the same??? That was so funny.... and my life. Great post!!!!!

  21. So very typical!!

  27. Hehehe...."They're the things that the mailman can smell from the road, dear...." :)

I love lilacs. I wish I had a bush, but I don't wish for the ants that come with them. They draw them like bees to honey.

    Enjoy good smells!

  29. Oh, that sounds right! Happens here too. I love my lilacs but will have to wait a few months yet.

    Love your new header! LBx

  30. Lilacs are absolutely one of my favorite flowers. They won't be here for a couple weeks, though. We are enjoying the forsythias and the trees are in blossom. It's all beauty. Spring is so gently, richly sensual. When the lilacs do get here, the scent will fill my house if I can possibly make it happen. You can not have too many lilacs, and yet just a little sprig can change the whole atmosphere in a room.

    ReplyDelete
  31. And now that he knows, is he enjoying them?! I wasn't expecting that last line. Life is funny there at Willow Manor!

  32. LOVE the willing heart! That's true love. You tell me to get it and I will. Even if I don't know what it is. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Glad you sorted that one out! Lilac is one of my favourites too, xv.

  34. Too funny.
    That's a great anecdote.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've got one like that here - he always goes on about the blue tree we have - only I know what he is talking about :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. WT, welcome to the club, mate! I thought those were bluebells :-D!

    Many thanks.

    Greetings from London.

  37. Hello Willow,

At least WT knows now. We had a lilac bush when I was a child. I remember it blooming only once, after which it never seemed to manage it!

    ReplyDelete
  38. oh that's funny.

I saw the lilacs calling out to me from my dashboard and my heart lept. I LOVE lilacs. Heavenly smell and color. Tragic that they bloom for what.. two weeks a year? OF course you have bushes at Willow Manor.

  39. Laughing so hard! Thanks for a great beginning to my day!

  42. Laughed out loud.

  43. The more I read of your personal stuff, the more I think WT and Willow are a parallel universe of BB and Wife.

Last summer Wife wanted me to go out and cut some oregano and I had to quiz her on what it looked like.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ahhh - made me laugh out loud - and thats the true test...love the new photos

    ReplyDelete
  45. So true. I think as little girls we were so wrapped up in flowers. ie. "This is a daffodil and this is a tulip and this is a rose" and we all cut them out at Easter from construction paper. I don't think boys cared about that stuff.

    I like your header too.

You are a master of keeping incognito, by the way - I almost forgot that Willow is your nom de plume.

  46. Thanks for the smile this morning!

There are some beautiful lilac photos today over at Lobster and Swan.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Great little story - made me smile. And I can smell those lilacs from here!

    ReplyDelete
  48. And can you explain to me again why they call it a 'man's world'.....

    ReplyDelete
  49. Ha!

The scent of lilacs is the most exquisite thing in the world, except for the scent of tea roses ... at least I think so.

    Enjoy those lilacs!

    ReplyDelete
  50. too, too funny !
My favourite (or one of my favourites - mock orange & sweet peas are in that short list too) scent in the garden. Love lilacs. Thanks M. Willow !

  51. How did Himself get to Willow Manor? Like your new header, and the Lilacs are beautiful. They remind me of my gran. She always had one outside her kitchen window. Thanks for jogging my memory.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hilarious! Cute too. wow, our lilac bushes barely have little leaves just unfolding from their buds. I'm jealous! Lovely bouquet.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Cute and beautiful! I can just smell the sweet perfume.

    ReplyDelete
  54. What a beautiful picture you took! Do you mind telling me what kind of camera you're using?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Ha ha! Those lilacs are gorgeous--I can just smell them...mmmmm. And it's clematis at your doorway? Oh! *look of total chagrin* Still lovely.

  57. Yes... but he's very cute!!

  58. I'm jealous. I haven't smelled lilacs for years. My aunt had a small motel in the mountains and the entire yard was fringed with purple and lavender lilacs.

I hadn't realized how much I missed them.

    ReplyDelete
  59. i'm not sure if that's funny or a little bit sad! but i can almost smell the lilacs. it'll be a few more weeks here. :-)

  60. Ah men.

... its your very own Husbandism!

  62. Hi Willow....WT might wish to join me on the forthcoming course at Manchester Uni...laughing here Willow.
    Beautiful lilacs....and well done WT

    ReplyDelete
  63. LMAO!

I love Lilacs and we have a wonderful bush, but their scent gives me a headache, so outdoors they stay sadly.

    ReplyDelete
  64. That could have happened right here in my own home.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Geez you've been eaves-dropping at my place!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I just love meandering over here every day. It is such a comfortable place to visit. Thanks for sharing yourself with us.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Only the most gorgeous smelling flowers on the planet. To be caught in the waft of a wind of lilacs is to be transported to another time and place. My bushes are just greening at the moment. It will be May before we see and smell them here.

  70. Well yes.....!
We had a teeny weeny little garden in London when we were newly weds.
    I planted a purple lilac.
R very kindly pruned it in March.........
tomorrow I will rush up to the green market to buy armfuls of lilac.

    ReplyDelete
  71. My lilacs are just finishing.

Round our way it's bad luck to bring lilacs indoors.

    ReplyDelete
  72. The bouquet makes for a bright moment. Amusing story.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Kevin, I've never heard it being unlucky to bring them inside. Must be only bad in your neck of the woods!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hellooooow, Willow !!
I could just see this little scene played out! It made me smile...a much needed smile.
A darling image in your memoirs...make sure that exchange makes it to a page in your book!

    ReplyDelete
  75. No way! (btw, you can reach out of our bedroom window and pluck lilac on one side and wisteria on the other)

LOVE the picture. I don't care for "purple" in clothing or furnishings, and yet it is one of my favorite flower colors.

    ReplyDelete
  76. WT left me smiling. I bet he will never forget any more what these beauties are called. LOVE the lilacs!

  77. (late catch-up, I'm all over the shop this week)

I think it's a north of England thing; I've never gotten to the bottom of it. As I child I remember pursed lips whenever "we'll gather lilacs" was played on the wireless

  78. So funny! Lilacs are one of my favorites! The scent is hypnotic, and I love the beautiful color of them. ~Lori
