Squaw Bread

I never thought that I would like a bread machine. I like the feel of the dough and enjoy the process of kneading and baking. But how many times do I actually knead and bake? Not many. Last year I gave in and purchased one. Now, I don't know how I existed without it. You just throw the ingredients into the machine and turn it on. That's all. There are hundreds of wonderful bread machine recipes out there. The only thing is, I have to be careful not to make bread too often, or we will gain hundreds of pounds! Pictured above is one of my favorites, Squaw Bread. My world traveler teases me every time I make it, reminding me of my Native American heritage. It is absolutely delicious!

Squaw Bread

Recipe for a 2 lb. loaf

7/8 C milk
1 C water
3 T oil
3 T honey
1 handful raisins
3 T brown sugar

(puree all of the above in blender and pour in bread machine)

add:

2 C flour
1 1/2 C whole wheat flour
1 C rye flour
4 T vital wheat gluten
2 1/2 t dry active yeast

Set machine on "whole wheat", medium crust.

  2. Funny. My husband came across the bread machine in the back of a cabinet last weekend and decided to give it a try. (I think I used it twice after receiving if from my mother a few years ago.) Everything about the loaf he made was bad, but I will copy this recipe for him to use the next time he's in a baking mood. (Actually, I think this is the first time in our 31 years together that he's been so inspired...)

  3. Sharon, I've always thought it would be nice to have a husband who was handy in the kitchen. I think the last time mine actually baked something was about 30 years ago...something he called "pepper brownies". Don't ask. ;)

  4. That bread looks fantastic! I would fall on it like a slavering beast if it was in front of me. I am a self-confessed breadaholic. I don't have a bread machine. I wonder if that would work with a regular technique?

  5. BP, I think the recipe would work without the machine, although I have never tried it.

    Enjoyed the BT article...thanks:):)

  6. I love my bread machine too. I often use the "dough" setting and then do the last knead by hand before baking it in the oven. I've found that loaves of homemade bread make wonderful gifts.

  7. MG, I use the dough setting, too, for dinner rolls and pizza dough. It does make a good thin crust pizza (my fave).
