The Fourth

.
Watermelon juice
turns toes blood red.
Seeds shoot out like
June bugs, dead.

Chicken legs, wax paper
covered deviled eggs
on tragic newsprint,
table spread.

Croquet weapons
scrap badminton birds;
wounds are mosquito bites,
scratched and bled.

Lidded jars of fireflies,
and sparklers pierce
our tired skies,
until the course of giant stars

stirs bursts of pride,
to fight the heart.
Force bias out
and melt the hate,
.
like ice cream on a sultry plate.
.
.
Willow, 2009
.
.
Best wishes to you and yours,
for a happy and safe July 4th from
Willow Manor.

That is a wonderful poem and it speaks of the 4th of July very well.

Here's wishing you and your family a Happy 4th of July.

May God protect our freedoms from those who want to take it away.

Another gem, Willow--have a wonderful 4th! I was just saying to Joe that I'd heard on NPR that a lot of towns are hurting financially and won't be able to afford fireworks this year--I think that is just so sad. One of my favorite days of the year is our annual Independence day celebration. Happy 4th of July!

What wonderful words, Willow. You should write more poetry.

Sorry I have not visited lately. I have been so busy. June, July and August are really busy for me.

I was just thinking about you the other day, wondering what I had missed.

Have a "Happy 4th of July."

And a happy Fourth to you! Love all the images -- is it just my perception or are sparklers little wimpy things now, nowhere as good as back in the Fifties? Probably due to safety regulations . . .

I could have used this poem to go with my new header!

You describe all my July 4th celebrations as I was growing up...except we would have clam chowder and clam cakes instead of the chicken:)

Thank-you and Happy 4th!

Your poem captures the 4th of July spirit beautifully, Willow!

My fondest memories of July 4th are walking on the Mall in Washington DC and seeing all those picnics spread out there. I shall never forget the huge white peaches in a whicker basket I spied on my first picnic and the Beach Boys playing live there. Not to forget the fireworks!

Hey, shoots the fireworks. I know everyone here will remember when they did. The dog that we loved so much hated the 4th of July and all its booming and banging. She nearly died each year from bewildered fright. So to her it was an annual nightmare. She is gone and that level of violence we shared with her is over.

I don't know the word "nosesses" and couldn't find it anywhere. And here I thought I knew everything. :)

Beautiful poem, Willow. As an adult, I tend to get caught up in the preparations and neglect the pure joy of a summer celebration. Thanks for reminding the child in me to relax and have fun.

May your Independence Day be wonderful!

A vivid & sometimes painfully recreation of July 4th as it often is. Boy, one of the few things I miss about the East is fireflies-- there aren't any in the West.

You have completely captured the essence of Independence Day. The way you blended the food images with the images of battle and the feeling of every American was just superb. I absolutely love that last line! Brava!

Hello. I happened on your blog quite by accident, (Incidentally, while searching for the line about land from Gone With the Wind), and fell in love. Your descriptions remind me so much of myself, and after reading the C.S. Lewis quote, I thought I'd say so. "What, you too?" :) I don't blog here, but I'm sure I'll come back to read your entries. If you happen to be on MySpace, I'm linked below.
